Abstract

Two new species of Sorolopha Lower (i.e., S. suthepensis, n. sp., and S. undula, n. sp.) are described and illustrated from male specimens collectcd in agricultural arcas and natural forest in Doi Suthep-Pui National park, Chiang Mai province, Thailand.

Key wnrds: Doi Suthep-Prri National Park, Khun Chang Khian Highlancl Agricultural Research station, new species, , Olethreutin i

Introduction

Sorutlopha was established by Lorver (190 l) with Sorolopha cyc'lotoma Lower, l90l frorn Australia as the type species. gentrs The is characterizcd by conspicuously coloured ibrewings, otlen greenish or brownish grey ancl pink, fiequently with a large roundish subapical mark, and by male genitalia with extremely long apd pendant socii. Nineteen species of Sorololtha have been reporled tiom Thailand: sixteen by Kawabe (1989). two by pinkaew \2007), and one by Prornrvong ancl Pinkaew (20 ll). Field rvork to establish the diversity ol'olethreutine was undertakcn in difl'erent habitat types of thc Doi Suthcp-Pui National Park, Chiang Mai province, during 2013- 2014. The two new species of Sorolopha described herein were collected in the Highland Agricultural area of Khun Chang Khiarr Highland Agriculrural Research Station (Fig. I ) arld in natural forest of Doi Suthep-pui National park (Fig. 2). Both nerv species share tlre cotrspicuous character of asymmetrical valvae in the male genitalia. In his treatment of Sorobpha, DiakonotT( 1973 ) remarked that the two known males of his sp hoerocopa group of species, S. asphaeropa Diakonotl. 1973, from southern Nelv Cuinea and, S. sphaeroc:opaMeyrick 1930, from northern Vietnam (as Tonkin) and lndonesia, both have asymmetrical valvae. Kuznetsov (2003) added Sorolopha asynrmetran(t Kuznetsov. 2003, tiorn Vietnant; and with the two nerv species from Thailand, S. sutheltensrs and S undulu, the sphueroct)pa group noll, comprises five species with asymmetrical valvae.

Materials and Methods

Specirnens used in the present study are all frorn the Kasetsart Kamphaeng Saen Collection (KKIC). A Leica MZ95 stereomicroscope was used lbr examination and specimen measurement antl a Leitz Dialux 20 cornpoun6 microscope was used to examine the genitalia. Forewing length was measured from the outer eclge of the tegula at wing base to the outermost edge of the fiinge scales at apex. Genitalia preparation methods were adapted from Common (1990). Terminology fbr fbrewing pattern and genitalic structures fbllows Horak (1991,2006).

Diagnosis. This species is most sinrilar to S. asphaeropr: in the shape of the asymnretrical valva and the cucullus, having 2-3 strong spines along the edge ofthe ventral process, but differs in having a less angled ventral margin of the left sacculus than S. asphaeropa, tlte right sacculus without strong spinifonl setae towards valva neck as in S. asphaeropa, and with thc dorsal lobc ol'thc cucullus elongate rathcr than roun
