LHRHa Spawning Hormone Clinical Field Trials - INAD 8061 2012 - 2014 Annual Summary Report on the Use of LHRHa in Clinical Field Efficacy Trials Prepared by: Bonnie Johnson, Biologist U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Aquatic Animal Drug Approval Partnership Program Bozeman, Montana Summary Spawning aids such as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LHRHa), human chorionic gonadotropin, and common carp pituitary are routinely used in aquaculture to induce gamete maturation in fish to enhance fish propagation programs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized the use of LHRHa under the Compassionate Investigational New Animal Drug (INAD) Exemption #8061 for the purpose of gathering efficacy data to support a new animal drug approval for LHRHa. In calendar year 2012 - 14 (CY12-14), 80 trials were conducted under this INAD to evaluate the efficacy of LHRHa to induce gamete maturation in a variety of fish species. Trials involved 79,667 treated fish and 360 control fish and were conducted at 26 different hatcheries, including six U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fish hatcheries, six state hatcheries, one university, 12 private hatcheries, and one tribal hatchery during this period. Efficacy was determined by whether or not treated fish produced or yielded more eggs or milt than untreated fish. Overall results from trials conducted in CY12-14 showed that treatments appeared efficacious in approximately 95% of the trials and ineffective in 5% of the trials. 1 Introduction The use of hormones to induce spawning in fish is critical to the success of many federal, state, private, and tribal fisheries programs. A wide variety of programs, including many that involve the restoration of threatened/endangered species, are dependent upon hormone treatment to complete final gamete maturation and ensure successful spawning. -

THE KEY THREATS TO STURGEONS AND MEASURES FOR THEIR PROTECTION IN THE LOWER DANUBE REGION MIRJANA LENHARDT* Institute for Biological Research, Serbia IVAN JARIĆ, GORČIN CVIJANOVIĆ AND MARIJA SMEDEREVAC-LALIĆ Center for Multidisciplinary Studies, Serbia Abstract The six native sturgeon species have been commercially harvested in the Danube Basin for more than 2,000 years, with rapid decrease in catch by mid 19th century. Addi- tional negative effect on sturgeon populations in the Danube River was river regulation in Djerdap region, due to navigation in the late 19th century, as well as dam construction in the second half of 20th century that blocked sturgeon spawning migrations. Beside over- fishing and habitat loss, illegal trade, life history characteristics of sturgeon, lack of effective management (due to lack of transboundary cooperation and change in political situa- tion in Lower Danube Region countries) and pollution all pose serious threats on sturgeon populations in Lower Danube Region. International measures established by the Conven- tion on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in late 20th century, listing of beluga (Huso huso) as an endangered species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, as well as development of Action plan for conservation of sturgeons in the Danube River Basin, had significant impact on activities related to sturgeon protection at beginning of 21st century. These actions were aimed towards diminishment of pressure on natural sturgeon populations and aquaculture development in countries of Lower Danube Region. The main goal of the Action Plan was to raise public awareness and to create a common framework for implementation of urgent measures. -

PRESENT STATE OF STURGEON STOCKS IN THE LOWER DANUBE RIVER, ROMANIA Marian Paraschiv1, Radu Suciu1, Marieta Suciu1 Key words: Danube, sturgeon, monitoring, conservation, stocking Introduction Since always sturgeon fisheries in the lower Danube River and in the N-W Black Sea were considered extremly important for the countries of the region, involving important fishermen communities (Ambroz, 1960; Antipa, 1909, Bacalbasa-Dobrovici, 1999; Hensel & Holcik, 1997; Leonte, 1965; Reinartz, 2002, Suciu, 2002; Vassilev & Pehlivanov, 2003). After 1990, conservation and fisheries scientists in the region have been aware of threatened status of sturgeons (Banarescu, 1994; Bacalbasa-Dobrovici, 1991, 1997; Navodaru, 1999, Staras, 2000) and Ukraine even listed beluga sturgeons in their Red Data Book (Shcherbak, 1994). Since the listing in year 1998 of all species of Acipenseriformes in Appendix I & II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) (Wijnsteckers, 2003) conservation and fisheries of these species are undergoing a steadily developing process of joint regional management. Two regional meetings on conservation and sustainable management of sturgeons under CITES regulations were organised in 2001 (Sofia, Bulgaria) (Anon. 2001) and 2003 (Tulcea, Romania) (Anon. 2003). In order to enable communication among CITES and fisheries authorities of the region an e- mail dialogue working group, the Black Sea Sturgeon Management Action Group (BSSMAG) was established in October 2001, during the Sofia Meeting. This organism was the keystone of most of the progress achieved during the last 5 years, leading to the adoption of a Regional Strategy for the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Sturgeon Populations of the N- W Black Sea and Lower Danube River in accordance with CITES (Anon. -

It describes seven sturgeon species - one of them an exotic species popular in aquaculture - and three hybrids. The guide also offers detailed features that can be used to differentiate between the species. The primary goal of this guide is to help law enforcement officials identify sturgeon species they may encounter through their work. WHAT IS A STURGEON? Sturgeons and paddlefishes, also referred to scientifically as Acipenseriformes, are a group of ancient fish originating more than 200 million years ago. They migrate mostly in order to spawn and live in freshwater, coastal waters and seas of the Northern Hemisphere. Conservation and sustainable use of wild sturgeon populations of the NW Black Sea and Lower Danube River in Romania Raluca Elena Rogin Marine Coastal Development Submission date: June 2011 Supervisor: Egil Sakshaug, IBI Norwegian University of Science and Technology Department of Biology Abstract Sturgeons belong to one of the oldest families of bony fish in existence, having their first appearance in the fossil records approximately 200 million years ago. Their natural habitats are found in the subtropical, temperate and sub-Arctic rivers, lakes and coastlines of Eurasia and North America. In the Romanian waters, five anadromous species of sturgeon, out of the total 25 species known by science, once migrated from the Black Sea into the Danube for spawning: beluga; Huso huso , Russian sturgeon; Acipenser gueldenstaedtii , stellate sturgeon; A. stellatus , ship sturgeon; A. nudiventris and the European Atlantic sturgeon; A. sturio (Knight, 2009). The NW Black Sea and Lower Danube River sturgeons, like many Acipenserids, were seriously affected by the rapid changes brought by human development. Being one of the finest caviar producers in the world they were intensively harvested for many centuries. Heavy uncontrolled fishing and destruction of habitat led to the collapse of most of the Acipenserids and the total disappearance of the European Atlantic sturgeon (A. sturio ) from the NW Black Sea. Worldwide public attention was focused on sturgeon conservation after their listing in the IUCN Red List of Threatened species in 1996. In 1998, after evaluating their abundance in the wild, CITES also decided to strictly regulate the international trade in all Acipenserids. The paper aims to analyze and review conservation measures that were taken locally, nationally and internationally by humans and the effect they had on one of Europe’s only naturally reproducing sturgeon populations.
