    International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research, Volume 4, Issue 9, September-2013 243 ISSN 2229-5518 Howrah Bridge and Second Hooghly Bridge: A Comprehensive Comparative Study 1Arnab Chakraborty, 2Ritaja Ray Abstract: The Howrah Bridge and Second Hooghly Bridge has been serving the city of Kolkata in conjunction with each other by allowing the city to be well connected with the rest of the state and indeed the rest of the country. The bridges by themselves, the former being of balanced- cantilever form and the latter being cable-stayed, are marvels of bridge engineering with each being built in very different eras with tremendous variation in the technology that had been employed, all to serve the one purpose of improving communication and traffic conditions by releasing some of the volume exerted on each due to daily movement. The main issue of this research is to make a comparative review of the two bridges, mainly from strict technical points of views and also from the social and economic factors that arise out of them. The structural configurations, foundation characteristics, construction techniques and maintenance issues have been extensively discussed. Relevant statistical facts relating to traffic volume on the bridges and illustrations have been provided as and when required to verify some of the facts that has been discussed. Through research conducted on certain single-theatres of Calcutta, it shows how some of these theatres, namely Rupabani, Chhabighar, and Regal, operating since the 1930s, bore the signs of historical changes. The emphasis on ‘spatial’ transformation draws attention to alterations within the industry, narratives of migration into the city, changes within public cultures and cinematic forms, and the ‘Bengali’ film industry’s dependence on Hindi films or its big-Other.

There is an application by an unregistered body that can be loosely called the local firecrackers’ association. It is a body of persons engaged in the manufacture of or trading in firecrackers. The State has issued verbal advisories pertaining to firecrackers during the Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations. Certain guidelines have been framed regarding Kali Puja pandals. An appeal appears to have been made on behalf of the State for all kinds of firecrackers not to be used this year in view of the pandemic and the virus that attacks the respiratory system.

During this financial year approximately 2500 numbers of butterflies were released. 15 new life cycles were documented. Other Works 2. We have assisted Centre for Contemporary Communication to do the Status Survey of Parks of Kolkata. The Report were prepared and submitted to CCC. 3. We have been assigned to assist the Wildlife Division II, Department of Forest, Government of West Bengal, to do the documentation of Butterfly fauna at Gorumara National Park. The work has been started during September 2011. 4. Many wildlife were rescued from in and around Kolkata and were given to the DRC Saltlake. 5. We have cleaned and restored the Santragachhi Jheel during September – November 2011. It was a huge success. Media covered our work with a lot of praise. 6. We are assigned by Creative Hortifirms Pvt Ltd to prepare a Biodiversity Status Report of their property at Panchla, named “Country Roads”. The work has started during July 2011. 7. We are assigned by GGL Hotel and Resort Company Ltd., Amubuja Reality to prepare a Biodiversity Status Report of their property at Raichak on Ganges. The work has started during August 2011.
