Papua New Guinea's First Multi-Purpose National Forest The Papua New Guinea Forest Authority was established on October 16th 1991 by the Forestry Act of 1991 (as amended). Its mandate as a responsible state agency is to sustainably manage PNG forest resources as a renewable resource for the collective socio-economic benefits of the present and future generations. The NFI has been planned to assess 1000 clusters, covering 4,000 plots in 12 forest types across PNG. PNG has taken a global lead in its efforts to combat climate change, particularly by proposing measures to reduce carbon by preserving and sustainably managing tropical forests. PNG has been part of the global action through adopting the concept of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation (RED) in international negotiations such as COP11 in Montreal in 2005. This concept was later expanded to include forest degradation and other management objectives and is referred to as REDD+. The implementation of REDD+ requires accurate national scale forest monitoring, and emphasis is now on significantly improving key areas such as boosting the national capacity on remote sensing based forest assessment in PNG, advancing the national scale information on carbon stock subject to different disturbances, and transforming management practices to sustainably manage the forest resources. With the completion of the NFI, PNG anticipates to gather credible information on carbon stock and accurately estimate Green House Gas emission from deforestation and forest degradation. The NFI is implemented by PNG Forest Authority and other key partners, namely New Guinea Binatang Research Centre, the PNG University of Technology and the University of Papua New Guinea. International partners such as the European Union (EU), the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and UN-REDD as well as the Italian Development Agency under the auspices of Mountain Partnership Program and the Crawford Fund are supporting the NFI through the provision of funds and technical support expertise. Others also providing similar support, are organizations such as the Sapienza University in Rome, Italy and the University of Queensland, Australia through the Mountain Partnership Program and the Forest Practices Authority in Tasmania, Australia via the Crawford Fund. The research conference was designed to provide an avenue for the exchange and sharing of research methods, and preliminary results among project scientists and the project stakeholders. It also provided an opportunity for discussing and formulating future research directions, as well as strategize NFI implementation plan for 2018. Key speakers that officiated at the opening of the Research conference included, The EU Delegation to PNG representative, Ms. Mateja Peternelj who gave the official statement, Deputy Director of FAO Forestry Department in Rome, Dr.Andrey Kushlin, and the Director of Forest Planning and Policy Division, Dr. Ruth Turia. The preliminary results from the various research topics reaffirmed our research methods and represent the type of information expected to be generated at the end of the project timeframe. The contributions by Dr. Hitofumi Abe and Dr. Ruth Turia for their editorial directions and those from Mr. Michael Poesi for coordinating the preparation of these proceedings are greatly appreciated. Sabuin Managing Director PNG Forest Authority 4 An outline of the multipurpose NFI Project and its first Research Conference New Guinea is the largest tropical island in the world and contains the third largest tropical rainforest after Amazon Basin and Congo Basin. The country of Papua New Guinea (PNG) comprises the eastern portion of the New Guinea Island as well as numerous islands and archipelagos. PNG is a well-known centre for biological endemism and diversification. Currently PNG’s tropical rainforest is relatively well conserved. The PNG Forest Authority (PNGFA) recently produced a national forest base map with assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency, and conducted remote sensing based national forest assessment with the assistance of the UN-REDD. Both studies showed that PNG’s forest covers 80% of country’s land area and 60% of the forest are undisturbed. Nevertheless, the forest is coming under increasing pressure, due to resource extraction, especially through logging, and also from land clearing for mining and agriculture. Despite their extent, size and rich diversity, PNG forests are poorly known scientifically. PNG’s first NFI will make a significant scientific contribution towards understanding PNG’s tropical rainforest and the biodiversity within. Since the UN-REDD PNG National Programme commenced in 2011, the methodologies of the multipurpose National Forest Inventory (NFI) for all NFI components including tree inventory, non-tree plant biodiversity, ornithology, and entomology and soil survey were established and documented through extensive review studies and discussions at a number of workshops and meetings. Forest in PNG was stratified and all plot clusters were mapped. All the required capacities for the NFI implementation were built within the PNG Forest Authority (PNGFA) by other implementing partner agencies through numerous in-country and overseas trainings for all the NFI components. Most of the group started out with a quick flight from Moresby into Nadzab Airport. Upon arrival, we drove to our comfortable hotel on the outskirts of Lae City. After getting settled in, we set off on a short but very productive bird walk around the hotel’s expansive grounds. The best thing about the walk was how confiding the birds were –they are clearly not hunted much around here! Red-cheeked Parrot, Coconut Lorikeet, Orange-bellied Fruit Dove, Torresian Imperial Pigeon, White-bellied Cuckooshrike, Yellow-faced Myna, and Singing Starling all vied for our attention right in the parking lot. As we took a short wander, we added Hooded Butcherbird, New Guinea Friarbird and look-alike Brown Oriole, and Black and Olive-backed Sunbirds to our growing tally. A Buff-faced Pygmy Parrot zipped overhead providing just a quick view, but the highlight of the walk was clearly the Palm Cockatoo that sat out feeding contentedly on fruits – admittedly a bit of a surprise to find this species so close to a major urban centre! We were relieved when Sue had arrived and Pinon’s Imperial Pigeon by Markus Lilje joined us for dinner to complete the group! The real adventure began early the next morning, with a drive back to the airport where we were to board our flight into the Huon.

D. Cornell University 2016 Tropical mountains are the most biodiverse terrestrial systems on Earth. This “megadiversity” is largely because tropical montane species inhabit narrow elevational distributions—understanding why tropical mountains are so biodiverse thus requires understanding the factors that explain elevational specialization. In my dissertation, I explored the role of two factors previously hypothesized to explain why tropical birds inhabit narrow elevational zones—temperature and interspecific competition. In Chapter 1, I describe resurveys of New Guinean montane bird communities originally surveyed by Jared Diamond in the 1960s, and demonstrate rapid warming-associated upslope shifts in these avifaunas. In Chapter 2, I test the hypothesis that these recent upslope shifts are the result of thermal specialization in New Guinean montane birds. However, I find no evidence that species’ exhibit local adaptation to ambient temperature in their thermal physiology (lower critical temperatures and thermal conductances), suggesting New Guinean montane birds’ elevational limits are minimally influenced by thermal specialization. I then use a comparative approach in Chapter 3 to test whether species exhibit local adaptation to cold high elevation environments in body size, and find little evidence that body size clines are positively linked to elevation in both intraspecific and interspecific analyses. These analyses suggest that temperature may primarily exert an indirect influence on tropical birds’ elevational distributions (e.g., by altering biotic interactions with prey, predators or competitors).

Class Freeman Received 27 July 2013 Summary.—We conducted ornithological feld work on Mt. Karimui and in the surrounding lowlands in 2011–12, a site frst surveyed for birds by J. Diamond in 1965. We report range extensions, elevational records and notes on poorly known species observed during our work. We also present a list with elevational distributions for the 271 species recorded in the Karimui region. Finally, we detail possible changes in species abundance and distribution that have occurred between Diamond’s feld work and our own. Most prominently, we suggest that Bicolored Mouse-warbler Crateroscelis nigrorufa might recently have colonised Mt. Karimui’s north-western ridge, a rare example of distributional change in an avian population inhabiting intact tropical forests. The island of New Guinea harbours a diverse, largely endemic avifauna (Beehler et al. 1986). However, ornithological studies are hampered by difculties of access, safety and cost. Consequently, many of its endemic birds remain poorly known, and feld workers continue to describe new taxa (Prat 2000, Beehler et al. 2007), report large range extensions (Freeman et al. 2013) and elucidate natural history (Dumbacher et al. 1992). Of necessity, avifaunal studies are usually based on short-term feld work. As a result, population dynamics are poorly known and limited to comparisons of diferent surveys or diferences noticeable over short timescales (Diamond 1971, Mack & Wright 1996).

Upon arrival, we transferred to our comfortable hotel on the outskirts of Lae city. A walk around the expansive grounds turned up some 23 species to get our lists well underway, including Orange-bellied and Pink-spotted Fruit Dove (the latter of the distinct and range-restricted plumbeicollis race), Torresian Imperial Pigeon, Eclectus Parrot, and Yellow-faced Myna, not to mention perhaps 1,000 Spectacled Flying Foxes creating quite the sight and sound! Early the next morning we were back at Nadzab airport, where a quick scan of the airfield produced some Horsfield’s Bush Larks and also excellent looks at a male Papuan Harrier that did a close flyby being bombarded by numerous Masked Lapwings! We were soon boarding our charter flight Pink-spotted Fruit Doves by Holger Teichmann over the rugged Huon mountains, although we quickly entered dense clouds and could see nothing of these impressive mountains. After some half an hour of flying through thick cloud on the plane’s GPS track, we suddenly descended and made an uphill landing at Kabwum airstrip! Our land cruiser was there, waiting for us, and after loading bags and ourselves onboard we made the bumpy drive up many switchbacks to reach the high ridge above Kabwum.

Email: [email protected] Abstract. The Black Pitohui Melanorectes nigrescens (Pachycephalidae) is endemic to mid-mountain forests in mainland New Guinea. Spectrograms of three different songs recorded in the Yopno Urawa Som Conservation Area (YUS CA), Huon Peninsula, Papua New Guinea, are presented. We describe the elevation and nest-site, height above the ground, structure and materials of a nest with an egg, discovered in the YUS CA. The colour and dimensions of the egg are documented. We present photographs of the nest-site, nest, and egg, and compare these with previously described eggs and a nest. We observed only the female Black Pitohui incubating the single-egg clutch. We compare the meagre information on pitohui breeding biology with that of Australian whistlers and shrike-thrushes. Introduction (Bell 1983). In lowland rainforest sites, flock composition was more influenced by the presence of Papuan Babblers Garritornis isidori (Pomatostomidae) than by that of The genus Melanorectes was resurrected by Dumbacher pitohuis, indicating that pitohui toxicity does not drive flock (2014) for the Black Pitohui, previously named Pitohui organisation (Goodale et al. 2012).

[email protected] Abstract – Swiftlets are small insectivorous birds which breed throughout Southeast Asia and the South Pacific. Among many swiftlet species, only a few are notable to produce edible bird’s nests (EBN) from the secreted saliva during breeding seasons. The taxonomy of swiftlets remains one of the most controversial in the avian species due to the high similarity in morphological characteristics among the species. Over the last few decades, researchers have studied the taxonomy of swiftlets based on the morphological trade, behavior, and genetic traits. However, despite all the efforts, the swiftlet taxonomy remains unsolved. The EBN is one of the most expensive animal products and frequently being referred to as the “Caviar of the East”. The EBN market value varies from US$1000.00 to US$10,000.00 per kilogram depending on its grade, shape, type and origin. Hence, bird’s nest harvesting is considered a lucrative industry in many countries in Southeast Asia. However, the industry faced several challenges over the decades such as the authenticity of the EBN, the quality assurance and the depletion of swiftlet population.

There are dozens of spectacular birds-of- paradise, most of which have an absurdly cool display, and fabulous arrays of pigeons, doves, parrots, and kingfishers. The gaudy marquee birds are supported by several great island-endemic and regional endemic families like owlet-nightjars, bowerbirds, Australasian warblers and robins, berrypeckers, jewel-babblers, bellbirds, Ifrita, and Ploughbill. There are dozens and dozens of birds on our list from this tour that could EASILY be picked as the top bird of a tour anywhere else in the world. The quality of birds on this island is that high. The “top ten” sightings below give a taste of the wonders of Papuan birding, but neglect dozens of other world-class spectacular birds that we saw on this tour. West Papua: The Best Birds on Earth August 3-24, 2019 The island of New Guinea has long been a tricky place to travel. Although Papua New Guinea enjoyed a brief heyday as a birding destination, its lack of infrastructure and security issues have seen it dive in popularity. At the same time, West Papua, which is part of Indonesia, has opened up to visitors, and become the clear choice for most people who want to visit the island.

This is a great place to start out a New Guinea tour because of its abundant and easily observable birdlife. En route we had a brief view of Grey-headed Mannikins, our first endemic for the trip. Birding the grounds, we quickly scored several Yellow-tinted Honeyeaters, Grey Shrike-thrush, a rather unexpected pair of Great Frigatebirds flying overhead, and a couple of the local specialities: Black- backed Butcherbird and Fawn-breasted Bowerbird. We also visited a bower of the latter species, decorated with various green items. The ponds were rather low, but still harboured a nice collection of waterbirds: Little Pied and Little Black Cormorant, Australian White Ibis, Nankeen Night-Heron, Pied Heron, Great, Little, Cattle and Intermediate Egret, Dusky Moorhen, Australasian Swamphen, Australian Little Grebe, Masked Lapwing, Comb-crested Jacana, Pacific Black Brown-headed Paradise Flycatcher Duck, both Wandering and Plumed Whistling Duck by Frank Smith and a fine pair of Rajah Shelducks. Fruiting and flowering trees in the vicinity produced stunning Orange-fronted Fruit Doves, Bar-shouldered Dove, Torresian Imperial Pigeon, plus several Australian Figbirds and Rufous-banded Honeyeaters. A careful scan of some nearby trees was rewarded with a roosting Papuan Frogmouth, massive and perfectly camouflaged! Some nearby fields finally rewarded us with good views of Grey-headed Mannikins and with the light fading, it was time to call it a successful afternoon! A full day of birding at the fabulous Varirata National Park was next up on the schedule.

Beehler Received 1 March 2012 Summary.—Based on feld work conducted between 2009 and 2012 in the YUS Conservation Area on the Huon Peninsula, we present novel distributional information for 47 avian species. This includes range extensions, elevational records, demographic data and new records of species poorly known in New Guinea. Meyer’s Goshawk Accipiter meyerianus, Rufous-throated Bronze Cuckoo Chrysococcyx rufcollis, Papuan Scrubwren Sericornis papuensis, Alpine Robin Petroica bivitata, Greater Ground Robin Amalocichla sclateriana, Yellow-breasted Bowerbird Chlamydera lauterbachi and a possible Rufous Monarch Monarcha rubiensis are recorded for the frst time from the Huon Peninsula. The northern scarp of the mountains of the Huon Peninsula is shown to be a contact zone for several lowland species-pairs. New Guinea is justly famed for its endemic avian radiations, best exemplifed by the spectacular birds of paradise (Frith & Beehler 1998, Laman & Scholes 2012). Diversifcation of New Guinean bird lineages has been shaped by the island’s geography, particularly the location and aspect of its mountain cordilleras (Diamond 1972, 1985, Heads 2002). New Guinea’s highest and most extensive mountains are the Central Ranges, which form a continuous montane spine that stretches north-west–south-east along nearly the entire island. In addition, New Guinea has 19 outlying mountain ranges that vary in size and distance from the Central Ranges (Diamond 1985). New Guinea’s mountains constitute a classic study system in island biogeography, and comparative study of avian distributions on the Central Ranges and outlying ranges has been used to infer historical paterns of speciation and community assembly (Diamond 1972, 1973).
