James Torrens, S.J. submitted by Patty Call - Good Shepherd Catholic Parish of Visalia

When you hear people refer to Over 200 parishioners gathered at the corner of Akers and Caldwell on “the Church”, they will be using the October 13 in joyful celebration of the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s phrase in one of four senses. I list final apparition at Fatima. the senses below, inviting you to With non-stop traffic crossing the busy intersection on a mild Friday note how much each statement may evening, hundreds witnessed this very public expression of faith by our or may not resonate with you. parish community. Led in song and introductory prayers by Fr. Cesar, our The Church is a worldwide priests and the large assembly recited a beautiful bilingual rosary organism that we Catholics belong for peace. It proved to be a very moving, prayerful experience. to, headed by the pope, who is its unabashed voice to the world. We perk up to read about him and thrill to watch him onscreen whenever we can. We may catch ourselves exclaiming, “That’s our man.” The Church is a local network of holy buildings and parish life, regulated by the bishop who is “corporation sole,” but above all is venerated as its core. It has a range of employees who will admit, or profess, “I work for the Church.” The Church is a sometimes raucous group of the baptized, not too pleased with what the leadership is saying and doing. They insist to one another and to the world, “We are the Church!” The Church is a Sunday gathering that the priest looks upon from the altar. If young in spirit, he may burst out with the salutation, “Good Fr. Victor Hernando, Fr. Cesar Solorio and Fr. Eric Swearingen morning, Church!” If older, he may be moved to think, “Look at them! This is the people of God.” Knowing them pretty well, he may add to himself, “This is the motley crew gathered by Christ!” Our blessed and actual Church consists of all the above, doesn’t it. G. K. Chesterton and other spokesmen have reveled in its messy variety. Rosemary Haughton once portrayed the Church as having two faces: Mother Church, an orderly planner with an established chain of command; and Sofia, the Wisdom figure, charismatic and contemplative. The Mother can also be a nag; Sofia can turn a little weird. (The Catholic Thing, 1997). Our great teachers meanwhile keep pointing to the Church as the People gathering at the future site of St. Knights of Columbus - Arnold Lampa, Fr. Whole Christ. We are gathered and given life only “in Christ”. That is our Charles Borromeo Church. Cesar Solorio and David Ortiz profound identity. Saint Paul, writing to the fractious Corinthians, minces no words about this baptismal reality: “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?” (1 Corinthians 6:15) Later, after describing how all of our organic parts have to interact for our body’s good, he makes his point: “So also Christ.” (12:12-31) Saint Augustine, in his many sermons on the psalms, speaks with a Pauline insistence that we, if unified in faith and life, are a body, Christ’s body. Discussing a verse from Psalm 140, “Lord, I have cried to you, hear me,” Augustine comments: “This is a prayer we can all say. This is not my prayer, but that of the whole Christ. Rather, it is said in the name of his body.” The Church today owes much to Pope Pius XII for his landmark encyclical, Mystici Corporis, 1943, which explores the Church’s full identity as the Mystical Body of Christ. The pope explains how, for all the baptized, his members, Christ is the sustainer. During the Diocesan Encuentro (Encounter), the conclusion or summary of the different working documents from each participating parish was pre- sented to all delegates. The parish delegates chose three priorities to work on as the Diocese of Fresno. The priorities chosen are listed below.

The parish delegates committed to continue working in their parishes to have fruitful Catholic communities where the essence of missionary disci- pleship, a culture of encounter, and accompaniment are present in every activity and event. The next step for parishes is to work on their parish pri- orities.

Our diocese continues participating in the national process of the Fifth En- counter. Our next step is to take 150 diocesan delegates to the Regional V Encuentro on April 27- 29, 2018. We will also present a document with our priorities and conclusions.

Kravec

Transfigured is the story of Patricia Sandoval, a renowned, full-time international pro-life and chastity speaker who shares her message of God’s mercy, healing, and gift of life around the globe inspiring hundreds of thousands with her harrowing, riveting, and exhilarating story of redemption. Patricia has shared her story through worldwide media outlets including EWTN Cara a Cara and Women of Grace with Johnnette Benkovic.

“She’s a modern day St. Mary Magdalene.” – Jesse Romero, Catholic Author, Radio Host, Evangelist

When Patricia Sandoval worked at Planned Parenthood, they told her, “Never tell a soul what you see behind this door.” So now she is telling the world. Transfigured is, however, so much more than a compelling tool in the hands of pro-life and chastity advocates. It is the incredible life story of a young girl who felt abandoned by her parents, and after three abortions and work at an abortion clinic, became a methamphetamine addict living on the streets - until a miracle occurred. ”Raw, real, and riveting . . . This story is made for the big screen. It’s that incredible…You are going to witness the innocence and beauty of a woman being restored. You are going to learn how Jesus, Mary, and Catholicism have the power to transfigure any soul. And I bet you’re going to want to be transfigured, too.” - Father Donald Calloway, MIC, Author of No Turning Back and Champions of the Rosary. Transfigured is written with Ms. Sandoval by Christine Watkins, author of Full of Grace: Miraculous Stories of Healing and Conversion (Ave Maria Press) and founder and CEO of Queen of Peace Media. Along with Fr. Calloway and others, Transfigured is endorsed by Archbishop and Bishop Michael Barber, SJ. Experience the powerful, healing love, mercy, and hope that God gave to Patricia. Musical Night at the Cathedral of St. John submitted by Sr. Rosalie Rohrer, IHM

On May 1, 2017 the Cathedral of St. John appointed a new director MUSICAL NIGHT AT for Liturgical music. Mr. Dale Fleck came to the Cathedral from the Diocese of St. Helena, Helena, Montana where he was the director of THE CATHEDRAL Liturgical music. Dale is a graduate of the University of Colorado where he holds FEATURING LITURGICAL ORGAN his bachelor’s degree in Liturgical music and organ. He also holds MUSIC, SCHOLA AND INSTRUMENTS a master’s degree from the University of Denver with a degree in composition and organ. He studied with Normand Lockwood, a fine composer. Dale also studied privately with Dr. Eric Thiman who was a professor of harmony at the Royal Academy of Music in London. At the Cathedral of St. John, Dale has formed a schola of music students from Fresno State University. There is also a volunteer choir that is bilingual and it sings regularly for an English and Spanish liturgy. During the summer Dale began a choir school for children of grades 3 through 8. This group continues this fall and sings regularly for an English and Spanish liturgy. The evening hours of September 22, picture a function in a rectory dining room: beautifully decorated tables with floral arrangements by San Francisco Floral, tables set up with trays of heavy hors de oeuvres prepared by The Painted Table, and waiters ready to serve the many guests with a variety of drinks. The guests mingled in and out of the Rectory enjoying fellowship with guests, good food and drinks, and placing bids for silent auction items. Then early evening the schola presented a concert of liturgical music in the Cathedral. The evening hours of September 22 were perfect for this musical concert. The weather was calm, and the church patio area was beautifully decorated for this occasion.
