Uniquely situated Message from at the centre of the region, near highways, rapid transit hubs, airports, port facilities, and the U.S. the President border, it boasts a vibrant and diverse urban economy that is home to over 11,000 businesses and CEO and growing. One need only look to the chang- ing skyline to see that Burnaby is increasingly becoming a go-to destination for businesses and residents alike. As a board of trade and the economic devel- opment arm for the City of Burnaby, we strive to find innovative ways to support existing and incoming businesses regardless of size. The needs of small business are unique, and with 98 per- cent of all businesses in British Columbia being small businesses (with 50 or less employees) we understand how integral they are to the health and fabric of our community. That’s why this year we have re-doubled our efforts to ensure that these businesses are supported by developing a Business Resource Guide, an online resource that collects and curates resources to help with planning, starting and operating a small business. We also ensure that Burnaby businesses have a voice when important decisions are being made by governments at all levels. With valued input from our members and volunteers, the Burnaby Board of Trade has advocated on a host of municipal, pro- vincial and federal issues including aligning B.C. Family Day with our neighbours, fighting the tax changes on our corporations, proceeding with slow, equal increases to B.C.’s minimum wage, encouraging and supporting more women to serve on corporate boards, reviewing road pricing with a view to affordability, and most recently advancing a four-point plan to stop B.C.’s Employer Health Tax. As a member organization, we are sometimes asked what the benefit of mem- bership is when our mandate is to create a healthy climate for all businesses. The answer to that is simple: membership helps us do the work we do on behalf of your business and the community as a whole. When business thrives we all thrive. We bring the voice of business to the table each and every time because we under- stand that starting and operating a business of any kind and in any sector is no easy task. We hope that the work we do at the Board helps make your path to success a little easier.
