How would November the team handle the rigors of the BIG EAST Conference? Was Doug McDermott’s decision to come back for his senior season the right call? Could the Jays replace Gregory Echenique in the 1 NORTHERN STATE (Ex.) W 89-61 middle? Would Creighton fans invade New York City the same way they had in St. Louis once the 8 ALCORN STATE (FSN) W 107-61 conference tournament rolled around in March? 11 UMKC (FS1) W 96-70 One by one, the answers became known, and what resulted was one of the top teams in program 16 at Saint Joseph’s (Comcast Philly/SNY) W 83-79 history, highlighted by what many have called the top individual performance in the program history. 23 TULSA (FSN) W 82-72 Creighton had announced its intention to join the BIG EAST Conference on March 20, 2013, and The Wooden Legacy had just 103 days to prepare before joining the league on July 1st. The pieces that helped lay the 28 vs. Arizona State% (ESPN2) W 88-60 groundwork and made for a successful 2013-14 season quickly fell into place. 29 vs. San Diego State% (ESPN2) L 80-86 Two-time All-American McDermott announced on April 25th that he was spurning the NBA Draft to return for his senior season. On July 2nd, the NCAA notified Creighton that Grant Gibbs was December awarded a rare sixth year of eligibility. All of the sudden, Creighton had two senior leaders back for 2013-14 as it jumped a level from the Missouri Valley Conference to the vaunted BIG EAST. 1 vs. George Washington! (ESPNU) L 53-60 After a lopsided exhibition victory over Northern State, Creighton opened the regular-season with 3 at Long Beach State W 78-61 lopsided wins over Alcorn State and UMKC before hitting the road for the first time. The Bluejays 8 NEBRASKA (FS1) W 82-67 went to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph’s. The Hawks soared to an early 24-11 lead before 17 ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF (FS2) W 88-51 CU clawed back behind reserves Devin Brooks and Ethan Wragge. CU returned home with a win over eventual Conference USA Tournament champ Tulsa before January heading to California for an eight-day trip that featured four games over the Thanksgiving holiday. 4 at Seton Hall* (FS1) W 79-66 CU opened the trip by knocking Arizona State from the ranks of the unbeaten to open play at the 7 at DePaul* (FS1) W 81-62 Wooden Legacy in Anaheim, 88-60. One night later the Jays started hot against San Diego State, 12 XAVIER* (CBSSN) W 95-89 but it wouldn’t be enough as the Aztecs rallied for an 86-80 victory and send CU to the consolation 14 BUTLER* (FS1) W 88-60 bracket. Creighton closed out play at the Wooden Legacy with a loss to George Washington to take 18 at Providence* (FS1) L 68-81 fourth in the event as McDermott was held to a season-low seven points. Before heading home, 20 at #4 Villanova* (FS1) W 96-68 CU closed out its trip with a road win at the famed Pyramid at Long Beach State, a 78-61 decision 25 GEORGETOWN* (FS1) W 76-63 that coincidented with Ethan Wragge replacing Will Artino in the starting line-up. 28 ST. JOHN’S* (FS1) W 63-60 The Jays would then return to Omaha for a five-game home stretch in which it never trailed. The Bluejays began the streak with an 82-67 win over Nebraska, but the game was never that close.
