Workforce growth slowed from over 100,000 annually between 2010 and 2014 to 23,300 in 2015 and 8,600 in 2016. It is expected to grow by between 25,000 and 40,000 annually in the next few years. Productivity growth is crucial to sustain competitiveness and to overcome slower manpower growth. In the transition, productivity grew only by 0.5% annually between 2010 and 2015 but has improved to 1.0% growth in 2016. Global research has shown that the more transformative the technology introduced, the longer it would take for companies to adapt1 to raise productivity. According to a SNEF survey, employers reported that they reaped only half the expected productivity gains after one to three years of taking action. They cited the main reasons to be the lack of a culture of excellence and workforce adaptability. Successful organisational transformation will require corresponding workplace and workforce transformations.
