The Walk of Witness on Good Friday was well attended by 35 members of St Andrew’s Church and Stainton Methodist Church, as well as visitors. On a beautiful sunny morning, the group called in at Dalemain for refreshments, by kind invitation of Robert and Jane Hasell-McCosh. On the way we heard the story of the road to the cross. At Dacre the walkers joined other members of both congregations for a short service was conducted by The Revd. Tim Cooke. Unfortunately the special lambing service scheduled for 14th May was cancelled this year, but we very much hope that next spring we will be able to celebrate the harvest of the fells. However on Sunday 20 August 2017 we hope you will come along and meet the new Archdeacon, Lee Townend, who will lead our morning Archdeacon Lee Townend worship. On Sunday 27 August 2017 Bishop Robert will be visiting Dacre church to conduct our morning communion service at 9.30 am. Please join us. On the evening of Thursday 25th May, the beautiful gardens of Dalemain were open for a social event to which everyone was invited. Drinks and canapes were served and there was an opportunity to visit the award-winning gardens. The annual Safari Supper will be held on Saturday 8th July, 2017. This is a great evening where you will enjoy your starter and main course at Dacre Village hall at 7pm before moving on to Blencowe for dessert and coffee. Please make a note of this popular event for your diary. Tickets are £12.50 each. Tickets for both events are available from Mrs Nellie Metcalfe, Mrs Rita Braithwaite, Mrs Ann Dugmore and Mrs Caroline Wood. Another date for your diary is 29th September. The Harvest Supper will once again be held in Newbiggin Village Hall. More details will be available nearer the time and tickets will be on sale in September. Following the retirement of The Revd John Reeves, there is currently no vicar at Dacre, but Sunday services continue as usual, with the support of clergy and lay ministers, to whom we are very grateful. During the vacancy the services will be taken by a wide range of visiting clergy and lay people from both the local area and also further afield. Services are held in the church at Dacre each Sunday at 9.30am and are followed by coffee and biscuits, and on the second Sunday of each month the Café church meets in Stainton School at 10am. A monthly prayer meeting has started and will be held on the second Monday of each month at Stainton Methodist church. A group meets on Wednesday evenings at 7pm at Dalemain for Christian meditation. Throughout the period of Lent we hosted a lunch every Wednesday which was preceded by a short period of reflection based upon the final words of Jesus. These reflections were extremely well received and the voluntary donations made at each lunch raised a total in excess of £600 which has been donated to the East Africa Disasters Committee of Christian Aid. Holy Week began with a three-day Easter Holiday Club led by our outreach worker, Tracey. 31 youngsters from the school attended the three morning sessions where they had lots of fun making Easter crafts, eating Easter snacks, exploring the Easter story, singing Easter songs and hunting for Easter eggs. There was also a prayer tent within which they could find a peaceful place to chill out and think about what God and Easter might mean. The children also created a mini Easter garden, within our peace garden, around a cross created by Alec Thwaites – one of the older members of our congregation. A prize-giving session, to which all family members were invited, concluded these activities, providing an opportunity for the children to share all the fun they had had over the three days. Then on the Wednesday evening of Holy Week we hosted a Circuit Service which was led by our minister Tim Cooke, at which he focused on the events that occurred on the Wednesday of that first Holy Week, particularly the story of the women anointing Jesus with oil. The church was arranged in an informal style for that occasion, providing the opportunity for those present to discuss in groups their own thoughts on each event. On Good Friday morning we joined our friends from St. Andrew’s Church, Dacre for the annual Walk of Witness. Setting off from Stainton village green 35 participants, accompanied by 2 dogs, walked first to Dalemain where they stopped for refreshments courtesy of Mr & Mrs Hasell-McCosh. The walk then continued to Dacre Church where a large congregation were waiting their arrival and in a service led by Rev Tim Cooke and Gorden Dugmore, Tim spoke movingly on the final three words of Jesus: “It is finished!” Our church was full on Easter Sunday morning for yet another inspiring service led by Rev. John Carr. John also chose to highlight four words spoken Jesus, pointing out that these are words that occur 47 times in the Bible and that they are words that have great relevance for us today in an age of uncertainty and fearfulness. Very appropriately the Sunday after Easter was our Chapel Anniversary at which we celebrated the 140th birthday of Stainton Methodist Church. At a service led by Tim, not only were past memories of the church shared, but we also looked forward to an exciting future. As we did so Tim reminded us of further words of Jesus in the Upper Room after the events of that first Holy Week: “As the Father has sent me, I am sending you”. As we move forward in the years to come, we move forward in confidence as we week to respond to that call. So as we do indeed move forward, let me remind you of some of our regular activities. Each week at the school Tracey runs an after-school club known as “cheese and quackers” at which, with many fun activities, bible stories are told – broadly equivalent what some of us will have known as Sunday School. Then on the second Sunday of each month at the school, commencing at 10.00am, Tim and Tracey also lead a popular Café Church service designed for all members of the family. Regular activities at the church include our weekly act of worship at 10.30am, which is always followed by tea and biscuit and the opportunity for fellowship, with a less formal service once a month which once a quarter will be followed by a bring-and-share lunch. For actual dates 6 please see the calendar of events on the front page of this newsletter. On the first Wednesday of each month we continue to hold our coffee mornings, not only providing the opportunity for further fellowship but also the occasion to treat yourself to some of our delicious home-made cake. Last, but by no means least let me remind you of our Welcome Packs designed to help all those moving into the neighbourhood, informing them of the wealth of activities provided by organisations within our three villages. We do need your help to ensure that everyone newcomer receives one of these. So if someone is moving into a house near to you, simply give Tracey a ring (07981 532979) and she will do the rest. Dacre Parish Council - www.dacreparishcouncil.wordpress.com HORSE & FARRIER PUB, DACRE - a meeting to discuss the future of the pub A public meeting is being facilitated by Dacre Parish Council to discuss the future of the pub in Dacre. The date and time are not yet confirmed but it is likely to be 25 or 26 July at Dacre Village Hall, probably starting at 7pm. Please check the local notice boards, the Dacre PC website, and the Dacre Community Facebook page for confirmation of the time and date. All are welcome. AN UPDATE ON PARISH ROADS AND RIGHTS-OF-WAY Dacre speed monitoring - Dacre is the only village in the parish which does not have a speed limit. Residents feel one is needed. At the request of the parish council CCC Highways used a traffic monitor . This showed that the average speed in the village was 22mph. Hardly any vehicles exceeded 35mph. The Highways response was that since no accidents have been recorded in Dacre and speeds were already low, 30mph signs might actually increase average vehicle speeds. However, the parish council remains of the view that a speed limit is required and will continue to press for one. HGVs on Blencowe Bridge - Local residents are concerned at the number of HGVs using the bridge in Blencowe. The appearance of the bridge abutment suggests it may be failing. The parish council have advised Highways of the problem with the abutments, and have asked if a the bridge has, or should have a weight limit. Greystoke Gill fingerposts - One of these has been renovated and repainted, and the other will shortly be replaced. Newbiggin weight limit - The parish council have been advised that this matter was being taken to the September Eden Local Committee meeting. It is likely to be put in place in the coming winter months. It is hoped that at this stage it will be possible to remove the A66 signs to Newbiggin directing traffic along Ruddenbank lane (next to Little Acre.) The possibility of imposing a width limit on this lane is also being explored. Speeding in Newbiggin - Local residents have expressed an interest in forming a village community speedwatch using a hand-held radar gun. The parish council understood that similar schemes were in place elsewhere in Cumbria, and questioned why police support for the schemes differed between Eden districts. It has now been agreed that a traffic data monitor (the rubber pipes across the road) will be installed to see if speeding is an issue. If this is confirmed then there will be police support for setting up and training a community speed group. (Residents may recall that there was a traffic monitor in Newbiggin two years ago, which confirmed speeding. Unfortunately the police will only accept the results of their own monitoring apparatus!) A66 junction - The parish council continue to press for improvements at this junction, which is officially an accident black spot. Rights-of-way - Many of the public rights-of-way in the parish were registered in 1968. However, evidence from old Enclosure Maps of the parish suggests that some were missed, or were incorrectly registered. This particularly applies to what most of us regard as “green lanes,” and includes the field route between Stainton and Hoghouse Hill alongside Carlsike Beck. Further evidence will be gathered to support an application under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, 2000, to have any lost parish rights-of-way recognised, and included in the definitive County maps. Please ensure that you don’t feed birds with bread or bird food on the ground, but on bird feeders that are inaccessible to rats and that do not allow food to spill onto the ground. Rats will always be in an area, but it is the availability of food available that is key to their numbers increasing. So make sure your compost bins are fully enclosed and rat-proof, and keep any food for chickens and other livestock in suitable containers. Remember that if you have an issue with rats (or birds) destroying the blue bags that are put out on a Thursday night for collection on Friday morning, resulting in the rubbish being strewn around and being unable to be collected, you can get in touch with Eden DC (01768 817817 or www.eden.gov.uk) to advise them that you will be putting your blue bin out inside a metal or plastic bin. You will have to purchase your own bins, but the collection teams will open a bin to remove the blue bags, as long as they have been informed. And contact Eden DC to request a visit from Rentokil to deal with rat problems. You will have to pay for the cost of the visit and any work, but it is subsidised by Eden DC. Eden DC can also organise surveys, if the problem is spread over an area of the village. 13 The Community Cafe is held every Newbiggin Village Hall - Regular events Wednesday 2-4pm at Newbiggin Village Hall Monday 4:30pm Dance The popular community cafe continues to provide 7:00pm Keep Fit excellent value-for-money tea, coffee, cakes and Tuesday 10:30am Golden Years lunch traybakes. 4:00pm Dance 7:00pm Bridge The yummy cakes at the cafe are now ‘on show’ on Wednesday 9:30am Pilates the Newbiggin Village Hall website 1:00pm Active Seniors http://www.newbigginvh.co.uk on the "Cake Stand" 2:00pm Community Cafe page which has photos of recent cakes and will change 7:00 pm Pilates every few weeks to reflect the quality of the baking.
