In this excerpt, Douglass revealed the mental oppression that he had experienced as a slave and the importance of literacy as a means to enlightenment and freedom. It could be inferred that illiteracy perpetuated a slave’s ignorance and compliance while literacy inspired critical thinking and self-empowerment. For instance, alluding to his reading of the “Columbia Orator”, Douglass demonstrates how he was able to see the evil of slavery and how this realization instilled a profound sense of discontentment. This excerpt would fit well in an American Literature or U.S. History unit, highlighting the slave narrative genre and the struggles of slaves during the antebellum period. Beat out of blood with words sad-sung In strange un-Negro tongue So long So far away Is Africa -Langston Hughes, Free in a White Society INTRODUCTION When I started working in HISD’s Community Services my first assignment was working with inner city students that came to us straight from TYC (Texas Youth Commission). Many of these young secondary students had committed serious crimes, but at that time they were not treated as adults in the courts. Teaching these young students was a rewarding and enriching experience. You really had to be up close and personal with these students when dealing with emotional problems that would arise each day. Problems of anguish, sadness, low self-esteem, disappointment, loneliness, and of not being wanted or loved, were always present. The teacher had to administer to all of these needs, and in so doing got to know and understand the students. Each personality had to be addressed individually. Many of these students came from one parent homes, where the parent had to work and the student went unsupervised most of the time. In many instances, students were the victims of circumstances beyond their control, the problems of their homes and communities spilled over into academics. The teachers have to do all they can to advise and console, without getting involved to the extent that they lose their effectiveness. -

Slavery was filled with incidents of brutality, punctuated here and there by moments when individuals reached across the barriers of race, gender and class to be decent to each other. Kingsley Plantation offers the opportunity to encounter this doubled-faced reality in the complex lives of Anta Majigeen Ndiaye (Anna Kingsley) and Zephaniah Kingsley. During Florida’s colonial plantation period (1763-1865), Fort George Island was owned by many planters. The site name comes from one of those owners, Zephaniah Kingsley. In 1814, Kingsley moved to Fort George Island with his wife and three children (a fourth child would be born at this plantation). His wife, Anta Majigeen Ndiaye, was from Senegal, Africa and was purchased by Kingsley as a slave in 1806. She actively participated in plantation management, acquiring her own land and slaves when she was freed by Kingsley in 1811. This account reveals an often hidden fact that some slave owners married their slaves, and that some former slaves in America went on to own slaves. -

LaRoche HATU Essay Essay for Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument Submitted by Cheryl Janifer LaRoche, Ph. D. January 7, 2014 It was an honor to engage with the legacy of Harriet Tubman and to participate in the Scholar’s Roundtable in November of 2013. The discussions stimulated by the questions provided were both illuminating and thought-provoking. I was heartened to learn that more community leaders and interested—and not so interested—parties would be included in future vetting processes. As I indicated during our discussions, inclusion should cover a wide range of voices and opinions, sympathetic as well as challenging. Often, the challenging participants force new ideas and lay paths for new directions. “Ownership” of the legacy of Harriet Tubman is shifting away from the local community as they realize that her story is both a national and global treasure. Within that context, however, Tubman will always remain an important local icon and I believe it would benefit both the National Park Service and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument to be very mindful of Tubman’s local importance. Tubman’s legacy can be used to strengthen and empower the local community, particularly those whose families have been rooted on the Eastern Shore for generations. For this essay, I will elaborate on each of the four questions posed to the scholars or reiterate points I believe are important to the interpretation of Tubman’s significance. They will learn about and reflect on the trans- Atlantic slave trade. They will analyze primary source documents from the slave trade by conducting research using the online Slave Voyages Database, reading slave narratives and viewing primary source paintings and photographs. They will reflect on the influence of African culture in Latin America as a result of the slave trade. Finally, they will write a slave perspective narrative, applying their knowledge of all of the above. Established Goals: Georgia Performance Standards: GA SS6H1: The student will describe the impact of European contact on Latin America. a. Describe the encounter and consequences of the conflict between the Spanish and the Aztecs and Incas and the roles of Cortes, Montezuma, Pizarro, and Atahualpa. b. Explain the impact of the Columbian Exchange on Latin America and Europe in terms of the decline of the indigenous population, agricultural change, and the introduction of the horse. rik Van WELie Slave Trading and Slavery in the Dutch Colonial Empire: A Global Comparison INTRODUCTION From the early seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century, slavery played a fundamental role in the Dutch colonial empire.1 All overseas possessions of the Dutch depended in varying degrees on the labor of slaves who were imported from diverse and often remote areas. Over the past decades numer- ous academic publications have shed light on the history of the Dutch Atlantic slave trade and of slavery in the Dutch Americas.2 These scholarly contribu- tions, in combination with the social and political activism of the descen- dants of Caribbean slaves, have helped to bring the subject of slavery into the national public debate. The ongoing discussions about an official apology for the Dutch role in slavery, the erection of monuments to commemorate that history, and the inclusion of some of these topics in the first national history canon are all testimony to this increased attention for a troubled past.3 To some this recent focus on the negative aspects of Dutch colonial history has already gone too far, as they summon the country’s glorious past to instill a 1. 2. Roots and Routes of Development: Coming of Age in the Caribbean and Diaspora By breaking into the old genre, the female heroine has brought new meaning to Bildung and the Bildungsroman. (Labovitz 1989: 258) West Indian women have reinvented the traditional male-centred form in order to portray the emerging female voice and consciousness. (Wilson 2008: ix) What does it mean when the tools of a racist patriarchy are used to examine the fruits of that same patriarchy?It means that only the most narrow parameters of change are possible and allowable. […] For the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. (Lorde 2007:112) 2.1 A Contested Genre Among the most-often repeated mantras of postmodernism are most likely the ones about the death of the author and the fragmentation of the subject. While the first is seen as antithetical to identity politics, the latter in particular poses a serious threat to a novelistic genre like the Bildungsroman, which concerned itself originally with coherent subject and stable identity formation. Indeed, postmodernism, as Daniel Lea puts it, “constitutes a serious ideological blow to the relevance of the bildungsroman” (2005: 20). As a consequence, by the 1980s, the Bildungsroman is pronounced dead by some of its critics (cf. Miles 1974; Moretti 2000), while others argue it has only ceased to be a form valid for trac- ing the development and self-actualization of certain privileged or bourgeois social subjects, meaning white, male, educated, mostly middle-class individuals; at the same time, for the depiction of female development it “still offers a vital 41 Coming of Age in the Caribbean and Diaspora form” (Abel/Hirsch/Langland 1983: 13).
