North Carolina has always had a presence in the LPGA, whether it has been golfers competing on the Tour, becoming certified instructors or consistently striving to earn a tour card. 12 Tar Heels have gone on to compete at the highest level: Sally Austin, Donna Andrews, Meaghan Francella, Cathy Johnston- Forbes, Casey Grice, Marcy Newton Hart, Stephanie Kornegay, Suzy McGuire, Katie Peterson, and Mindy Moore, who is currently Senior Vice President of Professional Development. Grice became the most recent Tar Heel to earn a spot on the LPGA Tour when she earned her card through the Symetra Tour.

Donna Andrews had six LPGA Tour wins and one Major Championship in her tenure on the tour. Meaghan Francella won the 2007 Mastercard Classic, and Cathy Johnston-Forbes won the 1990 du Maurier Classic while she was on Tour.

Suzy Mcguire Whaley is one of Carolina’s most notable alumnas. Whaley was a significant member of the women’s golf team when she competed at Carolina, but she’s gone on to influence women’s golf after her collegiate career. She went on to compete in the LPGA Tour in 1990 and 1993, but she’s more famously known for her qualification and participation in the 2003 Greater Hartford Open when she became the first woman since Babe Zaharias in 1945 to qualify for an event on the PGA Tour. Whaley went on to be a highly decorated instructor earning Connecticut’s PGA Teacher of the Year in 2004 and 2007. She was also honored by Golf Digest with a Top-5 Female Teacher honor from 2010-13. In that same time span she also earned U.S. Kids Top-50 Teachers. From 2008-13 she earned distinctions like LPGA Top-50 Instructor and PGA Top Instructor Honors in Connecticut by Golf Digest. In 2014 Suzy Mguire Whaley was elected PGA Secretary at the PGA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis on November 22. That made her the first woman to ever be elected as an Officer of the Association. She previously had served as a member of the PGA Board of Directors from 2011-2013.

UNC 10-13 Earned an LPGA Tour Card for 2016 through the Symetra Tour Casey Grice became the first Tar Heel to enter the LPGA through the Symetra Tour when she finished the 2015 year at No. 9 in the earnings list. The top-10 golfers who earned the most earnings throughout the year period were given an LPGA Tour card for the 2016 year. Grice earned the coveted card through multiple top-5 and top-10 finishes in the Symetra Tour tournaments in 2015. She was constantly atop the leaderboards on a weekly basis and her consistency paid off. Grice is a great encouragement for fellow Tar Heels Katherine Perry, Catherine O’Donnell and Allie White as well as the many other women in the Symetra Tour who hope to achieve their dreams of playing on the LPGA Tour. The A. E. Finley Executive Cup remains an important part of the tradition of the Carolina golf program and a fixture on the schedule each year. Formerly the Carolina Executive Cup, this tournament now carries a name to recognize an individual who has meant so much to Tar Heel Golf. In addition to providing funds for the original construction of the golf course and facilities, his estate has donated money for the annual trophy given to the tournament winners and also for the banquet held after the competition. This annual tournament is an opportunity for supporters of Carolina golf to play with past and present Carolina golfers, coaches and University officials. This tournament is more than just a fundraiser; it is a homecoming for former players to renew old acquaintances and establishnew friendships. The A. E. Finley Executive Cup, which had its start in 1976, provides vital funds for an endowment from which both golf teams may draw additional revenue for travel expenses. Since the men’s and women’s teams play national schedules, which take them all across the country to face tough competition, the A. E. Finley Executive Cup is pivotal in helping maintain the Tar Heel program at the top of collegiate golf. The appearances of golfing legend Jack Nicklaus in the 1980, ‘81 and ‘83 events are highlights of the tournament’s history, as he thrilled all spectators and contestants with a clinic he conducted after each tournament. At the 1997 event, which was held at UNC’s Finley Golf Course, Davis Love III was inducted into Carolina’s Order of Merit for all of his contributions to the Carolina Golf Program. The inaugural Executive Cup in 1976 was played at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C. The tournament was moved to Grandfather Mountain a year later and was played there for one year (1977) before returning to the Country Club of North Carolina for two more years (1978-79). Beginning in 1980 it was played at UNC’s Finley Golf Course and continued to be played there through 1990. After a four-year stint at the Governors Club (1991-94), the event returned to UNC Finley Golf Course where it is still played today.
