Burts had a long history of involvement with Winthrop. She attended Macfeat nursery as a Kindergarten student, and eventually went on to earn her baccalaureate degree from Winthrop College in 1937. Following in the path of her father, one-time superintendent of Rock Hill City Schools, Burts went on to pursue a career in education. After earning a Master’s degree from Teacher’s College at Columbia University in New York, Eleanor Burts taught in Hawaii during the Second World War and later in Greenville, South Carolina and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was during her teaching career, over three decades of which was spent in the Bronxville, New York school district, that Miss Burts began collecting books and other materials in earnest. Many of the books were read to her kindergarten and first grade classes through the years. The volumes Miss Burts saw fit to donate to Winthrop University span the globe’s languages, including English, Dutch, German, French, and Japanese. Some are more than two centuries old. Although there are some adult items in Winthrop’s Burts Collection, the vast majority are for children. Miss Eleanor Burts died on September 18, 1998 in Durham, North Carolina. She was a communicant at Christ Church Episcopal in New York. She was a member of DAR, Colonial Dames of America, First Families of South Carolina, Society of Early American Decoration, the Nondescript Club, International Christian University advisory board, and the Town and Campus Club of Durham. She was survived by her brother, Richard C. Burts. 3 Eleanor Burts Collection, Acc. 845 Manuscript Collection, Winthrop University Archives III DESCRIPTION OF SERIES Box(es) Series Year(s) 1-3 POSTERS 1957-1972 This series includes thirty-six posters that range from songs, The World of Pooh illustrations, Beatrix Potter characters, Christmas scenes, and Mother Goose.
