Whilst understanding the need to safeguard valuable minerals to prevent development that would impede future extraction, at this site very little sand has been extracted in over 28 years, and none in the 10 year period of the extension granted in 2016. This would seem to indicate that commercially the sand is not worth extracting. In the meantime the site remains a magnet for people wanting to get together in the countryside, camp, swim in the lakes and generally cause a nuisance for the local community, leaving litter and excrement.

I emphasised that any future plan for the sandpit needs to address the problems that have been

During lockdown we have generally seen a fall in crime with reduced numbers of violence and burglary. However, one area where we are seeing an increase is in rural crime which includes crimes affecting agricultural equipment, equine, wildlife and buildings. This means that in many of our villages in Sussex that rural crime is a big issue.

Sussex Police have stepped up to the mark and in June launched a new rural crime team.

The team has been brought together to serve the rural community, to increase confidence and encourage reporting through preventing crime and carrying out more proactive investigations. Made up of two sergeants, eight constables and six police community support officers (PCSOs), they aim to make rural communities feel safer by building long-lasting partnerships, responding to the community’s needs and providing an effective policing service. In turn, this work aims to increase confidence in the police in more isolated areas.

With 62% of Sussex’s area dedicated to farming and a significant proportion being in the National Park, Sussex is defined as ‘significantly rural’ by DEFRA (2011). Recently, arrested three men near High Hurstwood, Wealden, on suspicion of burglary and going equipped for burglary. This is just one example of the force’s approach to disrupting rural crime in the county.

I recently held a virtual meeting with local farmers and rural crime was high on their list of concerns with cases having increased during lockdown and the issue of trespass being significant.

I am hoping that the introduction of this new rural crime team will give residents living in our rural areas confidence that resources are going into to making their communities safer.

Do let me know if you have been affected by rural crime as I can be contacted on [email protected]

11 DR’s Diary CALL OF THE .....SOFA?

I have just finished reading a very good book called 'Call of the Wild', written in 1903 by American author Jack . The story centres around Buck, a huge St Bernard / sheepdog cross and is set in the Klondike gold rush of the 1890's in the Yukon.

Buck lives an easy life in the warm Southland's of America, that is, until he is stolen and sold to be a sled dog in Canada. And so begins a new, more brutal life, a life where Buck has to evolve and adapt to meet the challenges that a change of circumstances and environment bring.

I won't say more than that in case any of you are thinking of reading it yourselves. There are parallels to the times we live in today. OK, so abandoning the commuting to work from home may not be the same as driving a team of huskies over one thousand miles of ice sheets, but all over the world changes are happening and folks are doing their best to adapt.

As for how our environment affects us, well, we all know someone who gets demonic behind the wheel, or 'that nice, quiet lad' that epitomizes all the charm of Vinny Jones the moment he gets on the pitch.

Anyway, it’s made me think about 'man best friend'. Our own mini Buck may only be 8 kg, but what she lacks in size, she makes up for in attitude! I'm wondering if she's had a butchers at my discarded book, in the last week she's chased a dog in the field and nearly caught something small and gingery (a weasel ?) in the garden. Dog behaviour never ceases to amaze me, while we're discouraged from shaking hands, at least we don't do 'sniffy bottys'. Still, maybe they think we're unhygienic for pooing in the house?

To anyone thinking of buying a dog, I'll say this; little Bucks are now BIG BUCKS! Follow the advice on reputable web sites and always see the pups with their mother. Years ago you had pedigrees, mongrels or mutts from the local rescue. Now, the two main types are those with poodle or those without poodle, as for the rescues, well, they're as likely to come from Croatia as Crawley.

Oh well, the 'beast' has answered the call of the sofa' , so I guess its backsides to the floor for me!

14 Chailey School GCSE Results 2020

Many congratulations to the Chailey School Class of 2020. We are hugely proud of the kind, caring and mature young people you have become. You were wonderful role models for our younger students. Your work ethic was fantastic and you richly deserve the results that you have achieved. In the current climate it feels inappropriate to quote statistics and grades specifically.

We say goodbye to the entire Class of 2020 and with them the very best for their brilliant futures.

As an exams centre we were robust with our Centre Assessed Grades and confident all of our results are the product of hard work and application by all of our students and staff. VJ Day 15th August 24 people gathered around the memorial at 10.55am to join in the nationwide remembrance ceremony. After the 2 minute silence the ‘Cry for Peace’ was read out. Many of you will have seen me walk up to the Village Shop in Plumpton Green. We live, as I have said, in strange and unforeseen times. I was supposed to have retired from being Rector of Plumpton and East Chiltington on 31 st March 2020. However lockdown intervened and the Church of closed down. 17 PLUMPTON VILLAGE SOCIETY

After weeks of glorious sunshine, it, of course, rained on Saturday 25th July, the day of the village market!! But the rain didn’t deter the 25 stall holders, nor the 29 volunteers and 225 of the good people of Plumpton & East Chiltington who turned out in force.

Plumpton Village Society wanted to hold a Strawberry Fair in June, and obviously this was cancelled due to the lockdown, and it was decided to hold the market as an opportunity for the villagers to start meeting each other in a safe environment. Local business and crafters welcomed the chance to sell to their customers.

Plenty of room to social distance with help from Social Distancing Champions, including Jane Hildyard

We think that, despite the weather, the event was a real success with a total of £462 raised for the Hospice through the Hospice Support Group tombola, a bucket collection, donations from the stall holders instead of a pitch fee and Zoe Awcock raised £95 for the Hospice by selling face coverings made by her Nan.

Hospice Support Group’s Tombola Stall

Thank you to everybody for supporting the event. Especially the team of volunteers, and, those who got soaked when they helped with the tidying up afterwards deserve our special thanks.

These events cannot take place without the kind support of volunteers. If you think you can spare an hour of your time at future events, please contact Lee Stevens on 07887 562721 to be a Friend of Plumpton Village Society. There is no obligation and if you cannot help when asked, that’s fine, hopefully we will have enough Friends to spread the effort amongst us.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 3rd October at the Apple Fair inside the Village Hall and outside on the Green, between noon and 4pm. Entry is free. Bring your facemasks for inside the Main Hall and plenty of cash/change. This will coincide with the annual Apple Pressing, with stalls from local clubs and societies, plus some market stalls and refreshments.

Let us hope for better weather and that the Government COVID Guidelines will allow us to hold the event as we have planned it.

19 Plumpton Village Society Apple Fair coinciding with the Annual Apple Pressing

Saturday 3 October 2020 Noon until 4pm

The Apples on our trees are now flourishing and its time to celebrate the Great British Apple.

Do come along to Plumpton Village Green, where there will be stalls from Clubs and Societies across Plumpton and market stalls too. There will be a good mix of stalls both inside the Village Hall and outside on the Green, all with appropriate social distancing rules. There will be Social Distancing Champions to ensure you stay safe and refreshments available too.

The Apple Fair and Apple Pressing will be run to the Government Guidelines, including facemasks inside the Main Hall. So, please bring along facemasks, some change and of course Apples to press.

It’s time to have some more Village fun.

Dear Members and Friends,

Thought that I should send you an update during these “unprecedented times” I have been receiving weekly emails from the local NAFAS committee and our current way of meeting is not fit for purpose, so we must look for a new model that will provide members with the security and reassurance you are looking for. I have cancelled September’s meeting and will be reviewing the situation again at the end of the month with the up-to-date government guidelines As soon as we can meet together again in a safe environment I will let you know. Let’s hope it’s not too long!

Best wishes, Frances Gazzard, Programme Secretary

27 Chailey Commons www.chaileycommons.org.uk Following some relaxation in the COVID-19 guidelines, and remembering that social distancing still applies, the Society’s meetings and gatherings are being reviewed to see what we can do for the rest of the year. Thank you to our members for their support and understanding at this time. Provisionally we hope to hold a few meetings to go some way in replacing the published programme.

Firstly, we are planning a get together in the format of a group talk by Claire Ottewell on ‘Nettles and Foraging for Natural Health’. This will be at Townings Farm BN8 4EJ where we have kindly been given covered open space for twelve people to gather and hear the talk. This will be on Sunday 13th September at 14.30 – 16.00. Thank you to Carole Uridge for her help and advice and bookings to 01444 831098.

Secondly, we hope to hold a Late Summer Walk for twelve people on Saturday September 26 th at 14.30 – 16.30. Meeting at Romany Ridge car park, social distancing will apply and bookings to 01444 831098

Thirdly, we hope to replace the indoor talk planned for Thursday October 8 th at 19.30 by an Online Talk through Zoom. Peter Lovett will talk to us about his garden as’ The evolution of a formal garden to a nature reserve’. This will be a new way and will be open for anyone to join in by, nearer the time, contacting 01444 831098 for details of the link.

Finally, for now, the Society has been invited to visit the Chailey Windmill on Sunday October 18 th at 14.30 – 16.30. The logistics of this are still in the planning stage so details on the website. All meetings will be subject to current guidelines and attendees will be asked to register for ‘Track and Trace’ purposes, and to maintain social distancing. Jo Morrison It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Jo Morrison, a resident in Plumpton for nearly 70 years, passed away on the 17th July aged 93. Jo was determined to remain in her village flat, which she was able to do, until lockdown was enforced in March.

The family would like to express their grateful thanks to all the villagers who cared enough to express their concerns, enquired after Jo and generally watched out for her during her last few years.

What a wonderful caring community Plumpton has so it is little wonder Jo wished to stay in the village she loved. Thank you again. Christine, her niece.

When you apply for Universal Credit you agree to a Claimant Commitment with your work coach. This is the record of responsibilities that you accepted in order to receive Universal Credit payments. Your Claimant Commitment will be updated each time you see your work coach. When you agree to your Claimant Commitment you are allocated to one of four work-related activity groups. These set out the tasks you’re expected to complete in order to receive your full benefit payment. Check these online, or you will have been given a paper copy explaining which group you’re in and what tasks you'll have to do regularly, e.g. writing your CV, signing up for job alerts or applying for vacancies. You should keep a record of the tasks you’ve completed and how long they took in your Universal Credit online journal, or in a diary if you’re not online. If you applied for Universal Credit for the first time since the outbreak of COVID-19, you may not have a Claimant Commitment yet. Those who claimed before, will have had their Claimant Commitment suspended during the outbreak and had no work- related requirements imposed. From 1 July The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be calling all claimants to help them to prepare for work, so you should be contacted. The DWP will tailor your work-related requirements to reflect your circumstances e.g. shielding, or have childcare responsibilities because of COVID restrictions.
