    ARTATHON Artathon is a map that LIST OF ARTWORKS provides routes around Ipswich’s public sculptures at a range of different distances. The sculptures represent Ipswich’s maritime, industrial and sporting heritage both through the artwork and the landscape that is walked through. The trail offers a variety of environments to enjoy, including Christchurch Park, the regenerated riverside development and the town centre. The map has five rings linked loosely to the five Olympic rings to tie into London 2012. Routes are designed to be walked, jogged, run or cycled. GILES FAMILY 1993 Queens Street Miles Robinson 1 Fibre-glass resin Express Group Newspaper This statue shows “Grandma” and various other characters from his well-known cartoon strip. Is there a local connection? Well yes, because for many years he used a first floor office that looked down on the area where the statue is now. Robinson was approached by the Ipswich Promotion Bureau to design and make the ‘Giles Family’ sculpture which was sponsored by Express Groups Newspapers. It was unveiled in September 1993 by comedian Warren Mitchell in the presence of Johnny Speight and Carl Giles himself. Born in Ipswich in 1952, Miles Robinson studied at Ipswich School of Art and at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art. He then ran a studio in Dorset for two years before returning to Ipswich, taking classes at Suffolk College and teaching sculpture privately from his own studio near Ipswich. MADONNA 1990 Lady Lane 2 Robert Mellamphy Bronze This bronze on the wall in Lady Lane closely resembles the oaken statue which was once in the pilgrim chapel of Our Lady of Grace on this site in medieval times.

    SUFFOLK’S CHANGING COAST making space for wildlife and people Suffolk’s coastal habitats – valuable for wildlife Suffolk’s coast has a wealth of wildlife-rich grazing marshes and fen. These habitats support habitats including saltmarshes, mudflats, shingle some of Britain’s rarest and most attractive beaches, saline lagoons and sand dunes, as well wildlife, and many are specially protected by as coastal freshwater habitats such as reedbeds, national and international law. Black-tailed godwits by Gerald Downey (rspb-images.com) Black-tailed Suffolk’s coast needs action to: ■ promote the need for and benefits of habitat creation for wildlife and people ■ replace coastal habitats already lost to the sea through erosion and coastal squeeze ■ plan for the replacement of coastal habitats vulnerable to climate change ■ ensure that Suffolk’s estuary strategies, shoreline management plan and other plans provide clear guidance on planning for Black-tailed godwits winter on Suffolk’s estuaries habitat creation. including the Deben and the Orwell. Once extinct in the UK, avocets chose the Minsmere – valuable for wildlife Suffolk coast to return to breed in 1947 and are now a familiar sight. Minsmere RSPB nature reserve is famous for its wildlife, particularly birds. With a variety of habitats including reedbeds, grazing marshes and lagoons, it provides a year round bird spectacle – 327 species have been recorded there. Minsmere is well known as a place to see bitterns, marsh harriers and avocets. It is also valuable for other wildlife, including otters, water voles, flora and invertebrates. St. Mary-le-Tower, or St. Mary at the Tower to give it its proper name, takes its name from its proximity to a tower on the town walls. The tower and walls are long since gone and the only remnants today are nearby street names like Tower Street and Tower Ramparts. The aim of this document is to give all known details of the bells that have rung out from the Tower. I also hope to provide an insight into the tremendous ringers, whose goings on have left St. Mary-le-Tower steeped in history, for there was a time that the St. Mary-le-Tower Society were the most accomplished company in the land. On beginning research, I also decided on a secondary aim for this article. Throughout the years there has been a considerable amount of information published about St. Mary-le- Tower. However, some of it is simply wrong. In places I have chosen to point out these incorrect facts and in others I have decided to leave it out for now as this is only an early draft. I hope to provide a valuable insight into the true history of ringing at our wonderful church: St. Mary-le-Tower. I hope you enjoy reading the article. The Early Days There were only five bells and a Sanctus bell present in the tower in 1553. The treble and tenor were then recast by Miles Graye I of Colchester in 1607 and 1610 respectively.

[Decem ber 7, 1894. the ancient dilapidated clook, which he described as ‘ an arrangement of BELLS AND BELL-RINGING. wheels and bars, black with tar, that looked very much like an _ agricultural implement, inclosed in a great summer-house of a case.’ This wonderful timepiece has been cleared away, and the size of the belfry thereby enlarged.
