This was a collaboration between the managers of Mac resellers MagnumMac and Econet and ourselves and in order to protect ourselves in the event of a financial disaster, we formed a company called Expo Solutions Ltd with each of us being equal shareholders with one director appointed by each Shareholder. The first event was held at the end of September 2003 in the 3rd Floor Concourse at Te Papa and we were able to get as good number of exhibitors to show up and pay for the costs of advertising and It was acknowledged that the Mac computer was rental for the event. Although we did not make a the only computer that members were using as the large profit, we did recover all of our costs and Apple II family of computers passed into decided to run another event the following year. irrelevance. On this basis it was decided to change the name to better reflect the nature of the group and so the Wellington Macintosh Society Incorporated was created. This was shortened to WelMac and a portion of the original logo was incorporated into the new logo to reflect our geographical location. I mentioned last month that we moved into the main hall of the Johnsonville Community Centre and as we were getting up to eighty members attending our regular meetings, this was a good idea. However as time went by the numbers began falling and it was around this time that we decided to make some changes. We moved out of the main hall and into a smaller meeting room and for a while tried running seperate meetings for beginners and one for more advanced users. This tended to become a bit unmanageable so we reverted back to just one room and had around thirty regular members attending each meeting. We felt that the distance members had to travel out to Johnsonville may be causing less members to attend meetings so we made the move to Turnbull House, which not only gave us a more central city location but was also very close to trains and bus terminals. Around this time we had changed our name and begun organising the Digital Solutions Expo, which grew out of our first effort one Monday meeting These were interesting times and at the end of our night at Johnsonville. second expo in 2004, we held a dinner to celebrate our first twenty years of existence.

CAPITAL APPLE – JUNE 2020 PAGE 9 the demand for such physical competitions has changed significantly with the growth of online video platforms. Whilst our goal with these events was to increase, or at least maintain our level of membership, we did succeed in some respect but were unable to grow our membership base. As far as regular society meetings were concerned, we had to move out of Turnbull House as it was to be strengthened against earthquakes so we moved into a room at St Johns Church in Willis Street and remained there for a few years until the rent went up and we moved to the room in St Pauls Cathedral. This takes us up to virtually the present time and once again we find ourselves needing to make some fairly decisive decisions as to what to do to remain viable. With many similar groups around the world closing down, as has occurred within New Zealand, there is still sufficient enthusiasm and energy within the leadership of our group to soldier on. This can only be successfully achieved however with some meaningful changes and that is what we are now in the process of investigating. This is a society made up of individual members and it is you who have the ability and responsibility to make your thoughts known as to how we can continue. The next meeting at the end of the month is being set up as a means of hearing We also made the decision to hold a Nationwide from you so please make yourselves available and amateur movie competition in order to have your say. compliment the expo and managed to get some good prizes of an eMac computer and also prizes form Canon and other exhibitors.

It was decided to seperate the organisation of the movie competition away from WelMac as although it fitted within the scope of our constitution, it ran the risk of consuming too much of our resources so it was formed into a trust. This was in the days prior to YouTube having such a large online presence and this competition continued in much the same format for a further MovieFest 2004 Winners on Te Papa’s Soundings Theatre five years.
