2012-13 UCLA Women’s Basketball (page 13 of 17) 2012-13 UCLA GAME RECAPS NO. 16/17 UCLA 89 at OREGON 80 (1/4/13) Atonye Nyingifa scored a season-high 18 points, leading five Bruins in double figures, to help No. 16 UCLA beat Oregon 89-80 Friday night in Matthew Knight Arena in the Pac-12 opener for both teams. The Bruins led 50-32 at halftime and by as many as 26 points. The 50 points were the most scored by UCLA in any half this season while the 89 points were a season-high. UCLA held a double-digit lead for most of the game (34:04) and did so until Devyn Galland hit a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining in the game. Nirra Fields scored 14 points and added six rebounds for UCLA, and Thea Lemberger chipped in 11 points and made her seventh-consecutive three-pointer before missing late in the game. Kari Korver also scored 11 points for the Bruins and Markel Walker added 10 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for UCLA (10-2, 1-0). Jillian Alleyne had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Ducks (2-11, 0-1). Ariel Thomas led the Ducks in scoring with 20 points. Galland added 11 points, and Danielle Love had 10 for Oregon.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 65 AT NO. 16/18 UCLA 73 (12/31/12) Thea Lemberger tied her career high with four 3-pointers in scoring 20 points in a 73-65 victory over the Saint Joseph’s Hawks on Dec. 31, 2012 in Pauley Pavilion. Atonye Nyingifa added season highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Bruins (9-2). They’ve won seven of their last eight and enter Pac-12 Conference play with two straight victories. Erin Shields scored career-highs of 24 points and six 3-pointers, for the Hawks (8-5), who had their three-game winning snapped in their first visit to Pauley Pavilion. They beat the Bruins last year in the teams’ first-ever meeting in Philadelphia. The Hawks twice rallied to get within one point in the final 5:57. Natasha Cloud stole the ball and scored on a fastbreak layup the first time. After Nyingifa made one of two free throws, Sarah Fairbanks made one of two from the foul line to leave the Hawks trailing 61-60. UCLA closed the game on a 12-5 run, making 10 of 12 free throws. The Bruins controlled the boards, 42-33, including a 25-16 edge on the defensive glass.

NO. 17/18 UCLA 77 at PEPPERDINE 46 (12/28/12) Freshman Nirra Fields scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead No. 17/18 UCLA to a 77-46 win at Pepperdine on Friday night at Firestone Fieldhouse. In addition to her first career double-double, Fields added career-highs in assists (six) and steals (six). Atonye Nyingifa had a season-high 12 rebounds to go with eight points while Markel Walker had 11 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Bruins, which improved to 8-2 on the year and 5-0 in games away from home (3-0 on the road). UCLA led 34-17 at halftime and never trailed in the game. UCLA had 34 points off 24 Pepperdine turnovers and got 44 points from its bench. The Bruins shot 44 percent from the field for the game, while the Waves shot 34.7 percent. UCLA also outrebounded the Waves, 52-28, the Bruins’ third consecutive game with a +16-rebound advantage. The Bruins were able to do that without the services of its leading rebounder, Alyssia Brewer, who left the game after three minutes of action with a sprained ankle and never returned.

CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 77 AT NO. 12/16 UCLA 72 (12/20/12) Ashlee Guay scored a career-high 25 points and freshman Marta Masoni made a season-high six three-pointers as Cal State Northridge upset No.12 UCLA 77-72 on Dec. 20. UCLA (7-2) pulled to 74-71 on a 3-pointer by Nirra Fields before the Matadors made four free throws down the stretch to snap a five-game winning streak by the Bruins. It was Cal State Northridge’s first victory against a ranked team in its Division I history and its first win against a Pac-12 team since 1996. Masoni finished with 18 points for CSUN. Alyssia Brewer had 14 points and 12 rebounds for UCLA and Fields had 12 points. Markel Walker also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Bruins committed a season-high 25 turnovers and shot 38.7 percent from the field. The game featured 12 ties and 17 lead changes.

NO. 14/17 UCLA 53 AT ST. JOHN’S 52 (12/16/12) The 14th-ranked Bruins needed a last-second lay-in from Jasmine Dixon in overtime to beat the Red Storm 53-52 on Dec. 16 in the championship game of the St. John’s Holiday Classic. Trailing by one, Markel Walker inbounded the ball to Dixon for the wide-open basket with 1.5 seconds left. Shenneika Smith’s 60-foot fling was short at the buzzer. Brewer led UCLA (7-1) with 14 points and 15 rebounds, earning MVP honors for the tournament. Walker finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Smith scored a season-high 25 points for St. John’s (5-4). UCLA trailed 45-43 with 21 seconds left in regulation when Brewer made a nifty pass from the post to Dixon for an easy lay-in to tie the game. St. John’s had a chance to win in regulation but Smith’s 3-pointer from the wing was off the rim.

SAINT MARY’S 62 VS. NO. 14/17 UCLA 76 (12/15/12) Jasmine Dixon scored five of her 13 points during a run in the second half and No. 14 UCLA beat Saint Mary’s 76-62 on Dec. 15 in the St. John’s Holiday Classic in Carnesecca Arena. Trailing 49-48 midway through the second half, Dixon sparked a 12-0 burst that lifted UCLA (6-1) to the victory. Atonye Nyingifa had eight straight points to seal the win. Nyingifa finished with 14 points for the Bruins. Markel Walker had 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead UCLA. Alyssia Brewer added 12 points and 10 rebounds to complete her third consecutive double-double performance. UCLA also received 13 points from Thea Lemberger to finish with five Bruins in double figures for the second time this season.

NO. 17/19 UCLA 62 VS. NO. 12/16 TEXAS 42 (12/08/12) Alyssia Brewer had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 17 UCLA held No. 12 Texas to 24 percent shooting en route to a 62-42 victory on Dec. 8 in the MD Anderson Proton Therapy Showcase at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. UCLA’s defense held Texas to a season-low 42 points, a season-low 23.8 percent shooting and forced a season-high 29 turnovers by the Longhorns. Defensively, those figures were also season-bests for UCLA.
