RICE, MEIRA LEAD RAHAL LETTERMAN RACING 1-2 FINISH IN ARGENT INDY 300 WITH 2ND CLOSEST FINISH IN IRL HISTORY

Pioneer/Argent Nips Centrix Honda By .0051 seconds Sunday In Superb Race With Teammates

KANSAS CITY , KAN. — It was the greatest race in Rahal Letterman Racing history and only one guy knew who won while some 55,000 other witnesses weren’t sure Sunday in the Argent Mortgage Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway. That one guy just happened to be the winner as he raised his fist after crossing the finish line.

Buddy Rice seemed to be the only one who knew that his No. 15 Pioneer/Argent Mort- gage Honda G-Force had nipped his team- mate Vitor Meira’s No. 17 Team Centrix Honda G-Force at the checkered flag in one of the greatest side-by-side finishes ever.

It took a few seconds before the Rahal Let- terman Racing crews and the screaming racing fans knew who was the winner Sun- day in the second closest IRL IndyCar® Series finish ever, just 0.0051 seconds separated the teammates in a spectacular duel that had the fans and the pit lane on their feet for the final 14 laps.

The 1-2 finish for the -based racing squad was only the second time the team had collected the top two posi- tion in an open-wheel race. The other 1-2 finish for Rahal Letterman Racing came on Sept. 15, 2001 in Germany in the Champ Car event when Kenny Brack and scored the first and second place finishes.

Sunday’s 200-lap wasn’t as wild for Rice and Meira as the finish but a superb job by the team’s engineers and crew members kept Buddy and Vitor right in the fight all day. In fact, Rice led the most laps with 83 while Meira ran first on 37 circuits. Series point leader , who finished third, led at the start with Rice and Meira right on his tail but Meira looked to have a car to win Sunday. After the first set of pit stops, Vitor took the Centrix Honda to the front and held a six second margin. But on Meira’s second on lap 107, the per- sonable Brazilian stalled his machine and had to enter the race eighth place. Argent Mortgage Indy 300 (200 laps) Vitor drove through the field to run se- 1. (Hon) cord to Rice on lap 162. On Lap 175, 2. VITOR MEIRA (Hon) the yellow flew for a crash with Jeff 3. Tony Kanaan (Hon) Simmons and and set up the dramatic shootout between the 4. (Hon) teammates. The green flag came out on 5. (Hon) 186 and it was a side-by-side battle for 6. (Hon) And the finish was too close to call with 10. Alex Barron (Chv) Buddy just .0051 seconds ahead. I knew Vitor was there the Location: Kansas Speedway whole time but I thought I got him right at the Kansas City, Kan. line. He had me at the line on the white flag lap Track Type: 1.5 mile, high banked oval but I stayed on my line on the track and it was Race: Round 7 of 16 Races the shortest distance to the checkered flag. The (IRL IndyCar® Series) car was very good all day and I knew that Vitor 200 laps, 300 miles had my similar setup so he was going to be Past Winners: , 2001; Airton Dare, tough too. VITOR MEIRA:“I didn’t know who won. It was so close. But I’ll take second to Buddy because it was a total team effort by Rahal Letterman Racing. I knew Buddy would stay on the low groove and I had to use the high line. It was good for me but I knew the kind of car that Buddy had since it was the same as mine. The stall (on the second pit stop) hurt me because I had to come through the field to get to the lead. But my Cen- trix car was great and Ray (Leto, Meira’s engineer) gave me a superb setup for the race. I thought I had a car to win it today but Buddy did too. This team is really good and they have given me a tremendous opportunity to race a strong car. I think we are going to win one of these races soon. I guess I couldn’t get much closer.” : “As a team owner, you can’t asked for anything better than that finish. It was fanastic and I thought Vitor had actually won the race. But you could tell their cars were almost identical because they were side-by-side for so long. This is a great 1-2 finish for our team. Buddy and Vitor was magnificent today as was everyone on the team. I’m very proud of the whole group today. It doesn’t get much better than this. What a day!” RACE NOTES: Meira recorded seven of the ten fastest race laps Sunday… Rice jumped to third in the points with Meira now tenth as the series moves to Nashville on July 17… The race was 177.183 m.p.h.
