2016 National League Championship Series - Game 1 Los Angeles Dodgers Vs 2016 NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - GAME 1 LOS ANGELES DODGERS VS. CHICAGO CUBS Saturday, October 15 - 8:08 p.m. (EDT) - Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL RHP Kenta Maeda (0-1, 12.00) vs. LHP Jon Lester (1-0, 0.00) FS1 - ESPN Radio MORE THAN JUST AN EXPRESSION: Getting off on the right foot in the National League Championship Series has been a key to success since the series went to seven games 30 years ago. In that time, the team to win Game 1 of the NLCS has a 21-9 (.700) series record. The last team to win the NLCS despite losing Game 1 was the San Francisco Giants in 2012 (4-3 over St. Louis). - Elias Sports Bureau CUBS & DODGERS IN THE NLCS: The Cubs are 1-3 in Game 1 in their four previous trips to the National League Championship Series. Their only win in Game 1 came in their first appearance, against San Diego in 1984. Chicago has never won the NLCS. The Dodgers are 4-6 in Game 1 of the NLCS, are 3-1 in the series when they have won the opener, and have won the series twice despite Game 1 losses (1977, 1988). They are 5-5 in their 10 LCS appearances, including three straight losses. CUBS & DODGERS HEAD-TO-HEAD: The Cubs and Dodgers have met just once in the postseason, when Los Angeles swept Chicago in three games in the 2008 NLDS. In the 2016 campaign, the Cubs won the season series, 4-3, despite drop- ping the last two games of the set. The Dodgers went 1-3 here at Wrigley, and 2-1 at Chavez Ravine. IN SEARCH OF THE HOLY GRAIL: The Cubs enter their NLCS match-up with the Dodgers in possession of the lon- gest active World Series appearance and championship droughts in Major League Baseball. Chicago last advanced to the Fall Classic in 1945, and last won a World Series title in 1908. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are the second-most recent World Series champion among the four LCS participants this year, having last hoisted the World Series Trophy in 1988. Only the Blue Jays (1993) have won a title more recently. - Elias Sports Bureau FOUR!!!: The Dodgers are in the postseason for the fourth consecutive season, the longest active streak in the Majors and the longest in Club history. They have won the NL West title in each of those seasons, becoming the first Club to win that division in four straight years, and giving them 15 division titles in Franchise history. LES' IS MORE: Jon Lester is making the start for the Cubs tonight. Chicago went 103-58, just four years removed from a 61-101 campaign in 2012. The only other teams to do that were the 1969 Mets (100-62 after 50-112 in 1965) and the 1995 Indians (100-44 after 57-105 in 1991). TWO-WAY PLAYERS: The Cubs are getting an historic performance from their pitchers this postseason - at the plate. Chicago hurlers batted .333 (3x9) with two home runs and six RBI in the Division Series vs. San Francisco. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the two homers set a new LCS-era (since 1969) record for pitchers in a single series, and they tied the 1970 Baltimore Orioles in the ALCS for the most RBI.

  • Versatile Fox Sports Broadcaster Kenny Albert Continues to Pair with Biggest Names in Sports
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Erik Arneson, FOX Sports Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 [email protected] VERSATILE FOX SPORTS BROADCASTER KENNY ALBERT CONTINUES TO PAIR WITH BIGGEST NAMES IN SPORTS Boothmates like Namath, Ewing, Palmer, Leonard ‘Enhance Broadcasts … Make My Job a Lot More Fun’ Teams with Former Cowboy and Longtime Broadcast Partner Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston and Sideline Reporter Laura Okmin for FOX NFL in 2016 With an ever-growing roster of nearly 250 teammates (complete list below) that includes iconic names like Joe Namath, Patrick Ewing, Jim Palmer, Jeremy Roenick and “Sugar Ray” Leonard, versatile FOX Sports play-by-play announcer Kenny Albert -- the only announcer currently doing play-by-play for all four major U.S. sports (NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL) -- certainly knows the importance of preparation and chemistry. “The most important aspects of my job are definitely research and preparation,” said Albert, a second-generation broadcaster whose long-running career behind the sports microphone started in high school, and as an undergraduate at New York University in the late 1980s, he called NYU basketball games. “When the NFL season begins, it's similar to what coaches go through. If I'm not sleeping, eating or spending time with my family, I'm preparing for that Sunday's game. “And when I first work with a particular analyst, researching their career is definitely a big part of it,” Albert added. “With (Daryl Johnston) ‘Moose,’ for example, there are various anecdotes from his years with the Dallas Cowboys that pertain to our games. When I work local Knicks telecasts with Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier on MSG, a percentage of our viewers were avid fans of Clyde during the Knicks’ championship runs in 1970 and 1973, so we weave some of those stories into the broadcasts.” As the 2016 NFL season gets underway, Albert once again teams with longtime broadcast partner Johnston, with whom he has paired for 10 seasons, sideline reporter Laura Okmin and producer Barry Landis.

  • Baseball in Japan and the US History, Culture, and Future Prospects by Daniel A
Sports, Culture, and Asia Baseball in Japan and the US History, Culture, and Future Prospects By Daniel A. Métraux A 1927 photo of Kenichi Zenimura, the father of Japanese-American baseball, standing between Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. Source: Japanese BallPlayers.com at http://tinyurl.com/zzydv3v. he essay that follows, with a primary focus on professional baseball, is intended as an in- troductory comparative overview of a game long played in the US and Japan. I hope it will provide readers with some context to learn more about a complex, evolving, and, most of all, Tfascinating topic, especially for lovers of baseball on both sides of the Pacific. Baseball, although seriously challenged by the popularity of other sports, has traditionally been considered America’s pastime and was for a long time the nation’s most popular sport. The game is an original American sport, but has sunk deep roots into other regions, including Latin America and East Asia. Baseball was introduced to Japan in the late nineteenth century and became the national sport there during the early post-World War II period. The game as it is played and organized in both countries, however, is considerably different. The basic rules are mostly the same, but cultural differences between Americans and Japanese are clearly reflected in how both nations approach their versions of baseball. Although players from both countries have flourished in both American and Japanese leagues, at times the cultural differences are substantial, and some attempts to bridge the gaps have ended in failure. Still, while doubtful the Japanese version has changed the American game, there is some evidence that the American version has exerted some changes in the Japanese game.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).
