MARSHFIELD PIRATES MARSHFIELD BRIDGES TWO ERAS Kent Wigle will be honored by Pirates this fall on anniversary of 1992 state title

SAM BARBEE The World COOS BAY — Kent Wigle golfs a lot now. He plays at Bandon Dunes on Tuesdays and plays with a cou- ples group on Fridays that travels to Utah annually. But ask him to meet to talk about Marshfield football and he’ll show up with a manila folder full of clippings and stats and photos. Wigle coached the Marshfield Pirates football team for 21 years, including one state title and a bunch of Midwest- ern League crowns, and retired in 2009. He will be honored by Marshfield High School when his name is applied to the field for all time during the regular-sea- son home finale against Brook- ings-Harbor on Oct. 13. The honor comes on the 25- year anniversary of that state title in 1992, and, fittingly, in a season when Marshfield’s has a new head coach, John Lemmons, who was a key part of that team. BETHANY BAKER PHOTOS, THE WORLD With high hopes for 2017, Marshfield head coach John Lemmons, right, stands with his high school coach Kent Wigle at the Marshfield football stadium in Coos Bay. MARSHFIELD PIRATES Pirates go traditional in 2017

SAM BARBEE The World COOS BAY — For some reason it was really hard to get guys out for football in 2017 at Marsh- field. In a season celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 1992 state champion Pirates, only around 40 turned up for fall camp, but in the weeks since that number rose to 60-plus. Those numbers, though, hav- en’t discouraged the Pirates at all. It’s actually been a strengthening measure with those who did show up. They know they don’t have very many bodies and are endeav- oring to remedy that issue, but there is a mutual respect among those who have showed up, and the eŠort has been recognized by the coaching staŠ, led by first- year head coach John Lemmons. “I feel like we’ve really given a championship eŠort,” senior quarterback Justin Banks said. “I think we have a lot of special things ahead of us.” Lemmons was a standout run- ning back on that ’92 team, rush- ing for more than 1,000 yards that year, and brings a similar pro-style oŠense with him. “It was a transition at first, but now I think we got it,” senior Tyler Post added. That system will largely feature junior Tristin Lem- mons, who is John’s son and wears the same No. 47. As a sophomore last season, Lemmons rushed for 150 yards and four touchdowns against Siuslaw, drawing comparisons to his father. But he’s not alone. Fellow junior Grant Woolsey will play somewhere, be that quarterback or receiver, and Kellar, speedy junior Devin Benson and tall Cory Stover will once again be o‘ensive threats for the Pirates. “I think the overall goal is to win state, and I think we can,” Kellar said. “(We have) the talent, the speed.” That speed is already well-established. Kellar, Benson and Lemmons were all members of Marsh- field’s state-champion 4x400 relay team this past spring, and Kellar finished second in the 200-meter and 400-meter sprints. POWERS CRUISERS Cruisers rely on new leaders

JOHN GUNTHER The World Powers Cruisers POWERS — For the first time since the 2012 season, the player calling the signals in the oense at Powers won’t be named Jackson Stallard. SIUSLAW VIKINGS Vikings expect to take big step in 2017

JOHN GUNTHER The World SIUSLAW — Last fall, Siuslaw’s football team ran a new oense for the first time in half a century, abandoning the Vikings’ tradi- tional veer for a spread attack with new coach Jamin Pool. The Vikings had mixed results, showing flashes of potential, but ultimately struggling to find wins as the players feared making the slightest mistake under their new coach.
