LAND PLANARIAN INDICES OF THE WORLD (1987-2000.....): ELECTRONIC VERSION Compiled and Annotated by MASAHARU KAWAKATSU, ROBERT E. OGREN, EUDOXIA MARIA FROEHLICH and GEN-YU SASAKI EXPLANATORY INTRODUCTION The first article of the Land Planarian Indices Series was at first published in 1987 by Ogren & Kawakatsu: Index to the species of the genus Bipalium (Turbellaria, Tricladida, Terricola). At that time the Index was an attempt to collect 'major known taxonomic information' on all bipaliid species of the world. In 1988 (a), they published the second article entitled 'Index to the species of the genus Bipalium (Turbellaria, Tricladida, Terricola): Additions and Corrections'. In these 2 publications, almost all of the known records on bipalid species of the world were collected. These data were extracted from various literature written in many Western languages as well as 3 Asiatic languages (Japanese, Chinese and Korean). A new guideline of the editorial work for the Index was established: 1) the data were classified into each species group and listed according to alphabetical order of specific names; 2) the data in each species list were arranged by author's(s') name(s) in chronological order. In each item of the species list, the following data were given: the scien- tific name of the species used by the original author(s), his (her or their) name(s) and the year of publication, total page(s), figure(s), locality(ies), and the name(s) of country(ies) where the species was collected. The above-mentioned guideline was employed for the editorial work in prepareing Indices of the families Rhyn- chodemidae (1988b, 1989) and Geoplanidae (1990, 1991, 1992). In these further Indices Series, a new taxonomic system was proposed in some cases. Many explanatory notes were also given. Since the taxonomy of South American geoplanid species is complicated, the Part I (Geoplaninae) of the Geo- planidae Index by Ogren & Kawakatsu (1990) includes rather many erroneous citations. A new Revised Version of the Part I was published in 1992 by a cooperation of the third coauthor, Dr. E. M. Froehlich of São Paulo. That Ver- sion also included the additional and corrected data on many species of the Bipaliidae, Rhynchodemidae (Rhyncho- deminae and Microplaninae) and the Part II (Caenoplaninae and Pelmatoplaninae) of the Geoplanidae Indices. After the year 1993, Addenda I-V were published by Ogren, Kawakatsu & Froehlich (1993a, b, 1997b, 1999). The Combined taxonomic Index (1993a) and the Geographic Locus Index (1997b) are included in these Addenda. The "Errata" of the latter was published in 1998 (a). Following to the Additions and Corrections of the Index mentioned previously (1988a: Bipaliidae Index), their second list (-2) was given in 1992 (b). Until recently, the 6 lists were published (-3 to -8; 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997a, 1998b, 1999, 2000). The latest list "-9" is now prepared as a Ms. (for 2001). For the past several years, the 3 authors of the Land Planarian Indices Series had an anxious desire of the completion of the CD-ROM Version of the Series (1987-2000.... to be continue). This is now fortunately realized by a titanic effort of Mr. G.-Y. Sasaki, who was invited as a new coauthor of this series after the year 2001. FAMILIES AND SUBFAMILIES The following abbreviations are used: BFC = Bulletin of Fuji Women's College (Ser. II); OC = Occasional Publi- cations, Biological Laboratory of Fuji Women's College, Sapporo (Hokkaidô), Japan. Contacts: Kawakatsu: [email protected] O = Ogren; K = Kawakatsu; F = Froehlich; S = Sasaki 1) Geographic Distribution The present knowledge of the worldwide distribution rage of 3 families and 5 subfamilies can be seen in the - 1 - following 6 maps (black areas). The geographical distribution range of a cosmopolitan bipaliid species, Bipalium kewense, is also shown in the first map (shaded circles). For the original maps and explanations, see BFC30: 98-101, pls. I-III (ix1992b.pdf). 2) Pictorial Key to Families and Subfamilies In the following figure, schematic body diagrams of the dorsal and ventral views are illustrated. For the original figures and explanations, see BFC30: 98, 102-103, pls. IV-V (ix1992b.pdf). For the genera, subgenera, species and subspecies, see BFC35b (ix1997b.pdf). See also the Errata: OC31 (ix1998a.pdf). - 2 - CONTENTS OF 19 INDICES AND ERRATA Shortened titles are given for each Index (pdf).
