Form guide Rennes • The Ligue 1 side opened their first UEFA Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Krasnodar, Sehrou Guirassy scoring Rennes' first ever European Cup goal, but subsequently lost at Sevilla (0-1) and Chelsea (0- 3) before elimination was confirmed by a 2-1 home loss to the English side on Matchday 4. The 1-0 defeat at Krasnodar last time out ensured Rennes will end the group stage in fourth place. • Rennes are making their European Cup debut in 2020/21 having finished third in Ligue 1 last season. • This is Rennes' third successive season playing European football, a club first. • Having reached the UEFA Europa League round of 16 in 2018/19, Julien Stéphan's side finished fourth in their section in the same competition last season, picking up four points to finish behind Celtic, CFR Cluj and Lazio. • Rennes were 2-0 winners at home to Lazio on Matchday 6 in last season's UEFA Europa League, their only win in their last 12 European matches (D2 L9). • The Brittany side have won nine of their last 18 home European matches, losing only three. • Les Rouge et Noir are the 11th Ligue 1 club to take part in the UEFA Champions League group stage and the first French debutants since Montpellier in 2012/13. • Matchday 2 was the Brittany club's seventh meeting with a Spanish side and only their second defeat (W2 D3), the other a 3-1 reverse at Atlético de Madrid on Matchday 6 of the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stage. • At home Rennes beat Osasuna 3-1 in their first encounter with Spanish visitors, in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup first round first leg (3-1 aggregate), but have drawn the two subsequent matches, most recently 3-3 against Sevilla's city rivals Betis in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg (6-4 aggregate). Sevilla • The Spanish side opened Group E with a goalless draw at Chelsea before home wins against Rennes and Krasnodar (3-2) and a 2-1 success in Russia on Matchday 4 that secured progress. However, last time out they suffered a 4-0 loss against Chelsea, their heaviest home European defeat – they had never previously lost by more than a two-goal margin – and one which ended their 14-match unbeaten European run at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. • This is Sevilla's sixth UEFA Champions League group stage campaign, and a first since 2017/18, when they reached the quarter-finals. They have now qualified for the knockout phase in all but one of their participations. • Julen Lopetegui's side won the UEFA Europa League in 2019/20, beating Internazionale 3-2 in the final. It was the club's record-extending sixth triumph in the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League, all since 2006. • Sevilla finished first in their UEFA Europa League group last season with 15 points having won all but one of their matches, then ousted CFR Cluj on away goals in the round of 32 (1-1 a, 0-0 h) before wins in one-off ties in Germany against Roma (2-0), Wolverhampton Wanderers (1-0), Manchester United (2-1) and Inter. • Fourth in Spain in 2019/20, Sevilla won their section in each of their first two UEFA Champions League campaigns and, after finishing third in 2015/16 – when they went on to complete a hat-trick of UEFA Europa League wins – they have been group runners-up in their three most recent seasons in the competition, this one included. • In September, Sevilla lost 2-1 after extra time to European champions Bayern München in the UEFA Super Cup in Budapest. It was their fifth defeat in the match in six appearances. • The defeat by Chelsea on Matchday 5 was just Sevilla's sixth loss in their last 35 European matches (W24 D5). • Sevilla have won 19 of their 35 matches in the UEFA Champions League group stage, losing nine. • The Matchday 4 win at Krasnodar made it five away UEFA Champions League matches without defeat for Sevilla (W2 D3), since a 5-1 reverse at Spartak Moskva on Matchday 3 of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League. 4 Stade Rennais FC - Sevilla FC Tuesday 8 December 2020 - 21.00CET (21.00 local time) Match press kit Roazhon Park, Rennes • The home defeat of Rennes was Sevilla's third win in their eight fixtures against Ligue 1 opponents, home and away (D1 L4). • Sevilla lost their first three matches away to French sides but drew the most recent, 0-0 at Lyon in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League group stage.
