he weekend was already getting as blurry as Eldar’s fingers by Tthe time we had the Town Hall Wrap-up. I had a great time MC-ing the musical segments on the sched- ule and hope everyone appreciated Ed’s and my straight guy/obnoxious guy routine as much as I did. While the panels were certainly a priority, I think a few words about the musi- cal performances by the music editor would not be out of place. Things got off to a rousing start with the Joe Locke/Geoffry Keezer Eldar’s face is serene, but his fingers are not! duo. While I think Keezer suffered from a slightly quiet piano, there was no holding back the animated Joe Locke -- he felt every note he played from his head down to his toes. The two previewed a new joint-led band, playing it as a duo and I think their next one could very well be a duo ef- fort. To be honest, clever lyricists don’t always rub me the right way, but I thought Marilyn Harris’ humor, mu- sicality and wit made a strong impres- sion. And I think its safe to say that I wasn’t the only one. Even if her new album is a big band effort, she carried off a solo performance like the pro she is. The perfor- mance was great, but the real high- light had to be bringing the young pianist to the nightly Rochester Inter- national Jazz Festival jam session and presenting him as a promising young student, which, technically, he still is. With jam session leader Bob Sneider in on the gag, it was fun to see the au- dience and the band keep up with the pianist. Even Josh Workman got into act, playing guitar. Paul Hoffman and Bob Sneider was the first performance on Friday and it was a great way to ease into a day of music. The duo offered up a quiet set, punctuated by the trio of tunes. Other standouts include the hard swinging “Thing For Ray,” which is dedicated to Ray Brown, and the heartfelt Elliott Caine Quintet ballad “Nearness Of You.” Through it all, Rogers moves the music forward with a propulsive but wide-open style not Blues From Mars (Rhombus) anchored to the downbeat. He’s not a bad composer either, as the panoramic “Alleviation” and moody “Anorev” prove. Street Scene (Tetrachord) LARRY VUCKOVICH’S FIRST trio recording is a wonderful set- ® ting to display the light touch of this veteran Yugoslavian- born Bay Area pianist. Joined by Larry Grenadier – who performed with the session’s lead- er at the tender age of 17 back in 1983 – and the terrific, if undercelebrated, drum master Aki- ra Tana, Vuckovich has assembled a de- lightful set of stan- dards and originals. “Dexter’s Mode,” a Vuckovich original, starts the album off on a swinging note. The title track is the quintessential film noir theme, while another tune associated with that genre, “As Time Goes By,” gets a fresh mambo treatment. “Blue In Green” is a fitting tribute to Bill Evans; “Come Rain or Come Shine” is given a similar gentle treatment at the start before transitioning to a mid-tempo groove.
