Conservation & Open Space Environment CONSERVATION & OPEN SPACE ELEMENT INTRODUCTION Element Purpose The purpose of the Conservation & Open Space element is to promote the conservation and public use of natural resources. These planning directives should ensure that West Melbourne’s natural resources are supported and enhanced in balance with development. West Melbourne recently celebrated its 50th year as a Florida community. The character of being a small city is supported by its natural resources and open spaces. While much of the community has been developed, the undeveloped portions of the City west of Interstate 95 continue to act as a buffer between Florida’s agricultural heartland and developed Atlantic coastal communities. West Melbourne is located on the western slope of the Atlantic Coastal Ridge, very near the plateau. Elevations range from approximately 23 feet to approximately 29 feet above the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD). The climate is subtropical, characterized by warm humid summers and dry mild winters. The average annual precipitation is 50.04 inches, mostly occurring in the rainy season from June to October. The climate has allowed tropical plant species to persist under the canopy of temperate zone trees in the hardwood areas. The City’s largest public environmental resource is Erna Nixon Park. The 52-acre park is home to a variety of native animal and vegetation. There is a large private conservation area west of I-95 which is home to wetland flora and fauna. The remainder of the City does not contain notable amounts of natural features which is due in part to the City’s agrarian roots. -

THE SPECIES Clerodendrum myricoides (Rotheca myricoides) Verbenaceae Indigenous STANDARDlTRADE NAME: Butterfly bush. COMMON NAMES: Boran: Mara sisa; Kamba: Kiteangwai, Muvweia; Kikuyu: Munjugu; Kipsigis: Chesamisiet, Obetiot; Luhya (Bukusu): Kumusilangokho; Luhya: Shisilangokho; Luo: Kurgweno, Okwergweno, Okwero, Okworo, Oseke, Sangla; Maasai: Olmakutukut; Marakwet: Chebobet, Chesagon; Samburu: Makutukuti; Tugen: Gobetie. DESCRIPTION: A small shrub up to 3.5 m, much branched from the base and often with some branches scrambling through other plants. The leaves and stem have a distinctive smell when crushed. LEA VES: Opposite or in whods, simple, ovate, margin toothed or, rarely, entire, up to 12 cm long but usually smaller, without hairs and almost stalkless. FLOWERS: Blue or purple, sweetly scented, conspicuous, irregular, 2 petals shaped like butterfly wings. FRUIT: Small rounded berry, black when ripe. ECOLOGY: Found from Sudan and Ethiopia south to Zimba bwe. A common shrub in forest edges, bushland, moun tain scrub, wooded grassland and in secondary vegeta tion, 1,500-2,400 m. Common in rocky places. Agroclimatic Zone Ill. Flowers may occur any time of the year. USES: Arrows, medicine (leaves, stem, roots), bee forage, ornamental, ceremonial. PROPAGATION: Propagation is easy. Cuttings and seedlings can be used, as well as root cuttings or root suckers produced from exposed or injured roots. REMARKS: There are close to two dozen Clerodendrum species in Kenya. C. myricoides is the commonest. Other common species are C. johnstonii (Kamba: Muteangwai; Kikuyu: Muringo; Luhya; Lusala; Marakwet: Jersegao; Meru: Kiankware), which can be a shrub or liana that climbs with the remains of leaf petioles. Flowers are white and the usually galled fruits orange to black. -

It has been shown that the Lentibulariaceae genomes have been shaped by transposable elements expansion and loss, and multiple rounds of whole-genome duplications (WGD), making the family a platform for evolutionary and comparative genomics studies. To explore the evolution of Utricularia, we estimated the chromosome number and genome size, as well as sequenced the terrestrial bladderwort Utricularia reniformis (2n = 40, 1C = 317.1-Mpb). -

This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. In light shade or full sun, its lovely green and yellow leaves brighten the landscape throughout the summer season. Ease of propagation and low maintenance add to its symphony of charms. 'Duet' stars as a solo planting or as a mixed border or hedge, add- ing exciting contrast to your garden palette. Edgar Davis. It was transferred to Dr. Sandra Reed for testing and evaluation in 2002. 'Duet' was released jointly by the U.S. National Arboretum and Tennessee Technological University on November 9, 2006. The cultivar name ‘Duet’ was registered in 2007 with the International Cultivar Registration Authority for unassigned genera. Significance: 'Duet' is the first stable variegated beautyberry. It was selected for its variegated foliage and tolerance to full sun. Like other Callicarpa, its disease and insect tolerant foliage make it an ideal plant for a low maintenance landscape. Description: Height and Width: 6 feet tall and 6.5 feet wide in 4 years. Habit: Deciduous, rounded shrub. Foliage: Medium green with distinct yellow margins. -

Historical Setting of the Guianan Plant Heritage The Guianas are embedded high in the green shoulder of northern South America, an area once known as the "Wild Coast". They are the only non-Latin American countries in South America, and are situated just north of the Equator in a configuration with the Amazon River of Brazil to the south and the Orinoco River of Venezuela to the west. The three Guianas comprise, from west to east, the countries of Guyana (area: 83,000 square miles; capital: Georgetown), Surinam (area: 63, 037 square miles; capital: Paramaribo) and French Guiana (area: 34, 740 square miles; capital: Cayenne). Perhaps the earliest physical contact between Europeans and the present-day Guianas occurred in 1500 when the Spanish navigator Vincente Yanez Pinzon, after discovering the Amazon River, sailed northwest and entered the Oyapock River, which is now the eastern boundary of French Guiana. -

The glossy pointy leaves are highly ornamental and remain dark green throughout the winter. Neither the flowers nor the fruit are ornamentally significant. Landscape Attributes Japanese Aucuba is a dense multi-stemmed evergreen shrub with a more or less rounded form. Its average texture blends into the landscape, but can be balanced by one or two finer or coarser trees or shrubs for an effective composition. This is a relatively low maintenance shrub, and can be pruned at anytime. It has no significant negative characteristics. Japanese Aucuba is recommended for the following landscape applications; - Accent - Mass Planting - Hedges/Screening - General Garden Use Planting & Growing Japanese Aucuba will grow to be about 8 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 8 feet. It has a low canopy, and is suitable for planting under power lines. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 20 years. This shrub does best in partial shade to shade. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil pH, but grows best in rich soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. -

Dans le cadre d’un programme consacré à la prévention et la recherche sur la maladie des Gros Os et mis en œuvre par la Kashin-Beck Disease Fund en Région Autonome du Tibet (R.P. Chine), une étude écologique a été développée dans la partie centro-méridionale au cours de 8 séjours de 2 à 3 semaines (1998- 2007). Elle a permis de dégager, puis de renforcer l’intérêt d’une approche agro-environnementale dans la compréhension et la prévention de cette maladie. Parallèlement, la connaissance ethnomycologique et ethnobotanique des Ü-Tsang de ce territoire a été recensée. Au-delà de la connaissance bien documentée des plantes médicinales et de l’ethnopharmacologie, connaissance qui sera très brièvement rappelée, l’étude a abordé des thèmes méconnus, tels que la reconnaissance des unités de végétation, la diversité des nourritures alternatives (champignons, herbes potagères, épices, plantes aromatiques, condiments, organes souterrains, fleurs et fruits charnus consommés), l’utilisation des plantes en phytotechnie et pour le bien-être domestique. Une attention particulière a été consacrée aux plantes tinctoriales et à celles utilisées pour l’encens. Enfin, les menaces pesant sur cette biodiversité sont dégagées et des suggestions pour une meilleure gestion sont énoncées. -

Deutzia John Frett and Andrew Adams Deutzia is a large genus with more than 60 species and even more cultivars. It is a group of plants that is grown widely in the US, Europe and Asia primarily for its flowers. It has been popular in the US since its use in Victorian gardens, but the deutzia of today is nothing like that Deutzia ‘Mont Rose’ Deutzia ×kalmiiflora of days gone by.
