September 2018 Page 3 Bible passage: Mark 10:2-16 By Mary Dewar

“Let the Children Come to ME” “LET the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the Kingdom of GOD belongs to such as these.” Well know – very well known words of Jesus recorded for us by Saint Mark in the 10th Chapter of his gospel. All sorts of people came to Jesus in this chapter and for all sorts of reasons. The Pharisees, who, as Teachers of the Law, more often than not thought they knew better than everyone else, they came as usual to test Him, to see if He was going to break one of their many man-made rules. Then, there was a rich young man trying perhaps to justify himself and his way of life; also, Blind Bartimaeus, for whom JESUS was the last hope, (or should that be the best hope) for a miracle to enable him to live his life to the full. Even the disciples are questioning Him about what will happen to them, after all, they left everything to follow Him. Jesus an- swers them all, though perhaps not with the answers they were expecting.

Then, as we see in our reading, there are the little children; why did they come? What did they want? Why did the disciples turn them away? Well in those days it was natural that Jewish mothers would wish their children to be blessed by a great and distinguished Rabbi. Especially, they brought their children to such a person on their first birthday, and so it was in this way that the mothers brought their little ones to Jesus on this particular day. We will only fully understand the almost poignant beauty of these verses if we remember when it happened. Jesus was on His way to the Cross, there to die in agony for the sins of the whole world – AND HE KNEW IT. Its cruel shadow could never have been far from His mind. It was at such a time that He had time for the children. He had a heart to smile at them and maybe even to play with them for a while. Why did the disciples turn them away? They were not being nasty or ungracious, they simply wanted to protect Je- sus. He had told them He was going to die, they didn’t really understand what was going on but they did know something awful was going to happen. Out of their love for Him they tried to send the little children away, thinking that He had enough to worry about. But no! Jesus said, “Let the children come to Me…”

Page 4 September 2018 Incidentally, this tells us a lot about Jesus, that He was the kind of Person who loved children and who was loved by them in return. I think He must have smiled and laughed a lot. This little incident in Jesus’ earthly life shows us the wonderful kind of Person He is.

“Let the little children come to Me,” Jesus said, “the Kingdom of GOD belongs to such as these.” What was it about children that Jesus liked and valued so much? Most children have humility, they don’t usually like to push themselves forward, their natural instinct is to obey, they also have great trust in the rest of mankind, which sadly these days, can be abused. But trust is a lovely thing and its up to us to cherish it. Lastly, most children have a short memory, they don’t bear grudges even when they are sometimes unjustly treated, the simply YEW TREE COTTAGE forget, and forget so completely they do not even need to forgive.

RESIDENTIAL HOME So there we have it; the Kingdom of GOD belongs to those who, like little chil- dren, have humility, trust, and obedience and do not bear grudges. When we Hornsbury Hill, Chard, , TA20 3DB become as little children, childlike in our faith, not childish, then we can truly say that we have received the Kingdom of GOD and have entered into a loving
