An 18th century ancestor, also bearing the name of Nicholas Gonsalves, was a leading figure in the small Catholic community of Mangalore - so much so that the Milagres parish priest would never commence mass until his arrival. Then a gun would be fired announcing the start of the mass. Nicholas Gonsalves (husband of Monica) was a tahsildar at Mangalore - one of the distinguished official positions of those days. They had 5 sons, three of whom, Salvador, Paul & Lawrence, all qualified as lawyers and formed a famous partnership in Ootacamund. Nicholas died on 30 Nov 1898 aged 53. SALDANHA Peter Francis Xavier Saldanha – popularly known by his last name Xavier (or Saver) – was one among five sons of Antony Justin Saldanha, who became famous as a pioneer in the coffee curing industry, which up to his time was entirely in European hands. Following the death of his elder brothers, P.F.X. took over the management of the coffee curing works founded by his father - and, in 1886, won a medal as an ‘Expert Curer’ in the Industrial and Colonial Exhibition, London. But he left the firm in 1908 to found his own coffee-curing works at Falnir - calling it ‘Highlands’, a name now applied to the area in general. The firm was generally acknowledged as being very up-to-date in its machinery. P.F.X. Saldanha was one of the leaders of the community. He was one of the main founders of the Catholic Club in 1897. He was a municipal councillor and also a member of the Madras Legislative Council from 1910 - said to have been the first Indian Catholic M.L.C. He also has the distinction of being the first resident of South Kanara District to possess a car; this is now on display at the St Aloysius College Museum. He was twice married. His first wife was his second cousin Martha, daughter of John Joseph Saldanha, subjudge at Honavar. They had 7 children, the eldest of whom was Monica who married Salvador Gonsalves – who bears the reference number [4.1.2] in the current table. Martha died in 1896 and hers is perhaps the largest tombstone in Milagres cemetery. His second wife, Magdalen Noronha, was his first cousin on his mother’s side. ****************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************~ 8 ~ *** THE THIRD GENERATION Part I : The Gonsalves Family ======[1.1] (VICTOR) PASCAL GONSALVES Pascal Gonsalves is unique in that he qualified both as a doctor and as a barrister. He commenced life as a medical practitioner, having obtained degrees from Madras (MB & CM) and Edinburgh (LRCP & S) and Durham (MD). He later also took to law, and practised in London for over 40 years, specializing in medico-legal work. He married an English lady in 1914, but she died shortly afterwards. Pascal returned to India in 1945 and initially lived at the family home in Ooty, but eventually settled in Mangalore. ------From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” Michaelmas 1898 Piedade Mathias, B.A., '95, and Pascal Gonsalves, F.A., '92, are both at Madras preparing for the M.B. examination. They have already passed the first examination. January 1945 Dr. Pascal Gonsalves, eldest brother of Fr. T. Gonsalves, S.J., who was practising in London, both as a doctor and as a barrister for 43 years, has just come down to Mangalore. He intends settling down at Ooty where his lawyer brothers are. May 1949 (The late Dr. V.P. Gonsalves : A tribute from his brother P.S. Gonsalves) Victor Pascal Gonslaves, or Pascal as he was called, was the eldest of the five sons of Nicholas Cajetan Gonsalves who, in his turn, was the eldest of a batch of 6 sons and 3 daughters of Pascal Gonsalves, the progenitor of one of the four branches of the old Gonsalves family of Mangalore, settled down for a century on the western slopes of Lighthouse Hill. The progenitor, Pascal Gonsalves, was employed in North Kanara and was Excise Commissioner of Karwar (see [2.1]). Young Pascal, the grandson, was a fair handsome stalwart and a six-footer. He entered the St. Aloysius College in its infant days during the regime of Fathers Willy and Sergeant and continued under Fathers Kemp and Aldim. He distinguished himself in the College Cricket team captained by his younger brother Salvadore or ‘Shady’ as he was called. The two were like twins. Pascal took to medicine after passing his F.A. while Salvadore went for law after completing his B.A. degree. After a course in the Madras Medical College for the M.B. & C.M. of the Madras University, Pascal sailed in 1900 to England for higher studies. After securing the L.R.C.P. & S. of Edinburgh and later the M.D. of Durham, he settled down to practice in London where he worked for 42 years. Latterly he took to law as his second love, was called to the Bar being introduced by Lord Russel of Killowen and was busily engaged in medico-legal work when he contracted a rheumatic affection of the neck which gradually crippled him. He married Miss Gertrude Evans but she died after a brief married life. Pascal left England for good and returned to India in November 1944 and took up his residence with his brother Lawrence in Ooty. It was his earnest wish to spend his last days in his home town. Accordingly he came to reside at "Woodside", the family seat at Mangalore, and after a brief illness was called to his eternal rest on April 22, 1949. He lies buried by the side of his parents inside the Milagres Church. He was of an intensely religious disposition and lived a simple and austere life until the end. ======~ 9 ~ ======CHILDREN OF: [1.2] SALVADOR J. Easter 1901 Salvador Gonsalves, B.A., '95, passed the B.L. examination held last January in Madras. November 1948 Mr. S.J. Gonsalves, a leading Advocate of Ooty, died there on Nov 23, aged 73. He was the elder brother of Rev. Fr. T. Gonsalves, former Principal of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. He was a member of the local Municipal Council for 35 years, of the District Board for 10 years and of the Madras Legislative Council for 5 years. (The late Mr. S.J. Gonsalves : A tribute from his daughter Enid Saldanha) Great men are born, not made! So it was with Salvadore John Gonsalves, or ‘Sheddy’ as he was known to his friends. With his passing on November 24th, 1948, Mangalore has lost a son, who for more than half a century contributed much to the greatness of the community. The second in a family of 5 sons, he was born in Mangalore on April 11th, 1875. In school and college he was a brilliant student and he is still remembered as a great cricketer of St. Aloysius'. After securing his B.L. degree in Madras, he proceeded to Ootacamund where no Indian had hitherto ventured. For a time he partnered an English solicitor of repute, but later he set up independent practice. Ably assisted by his youngest brother, Lawrence, the firm of Gonsalves and Gonsalves became one of the foremost in the legal profession. In public life too, Mr. S.J. Gonsalves was a prominent personality. At one period he was President of the Indian Christian Association and he represented the community in the Madras Legislature. He was also a member of the Ootacamund Municipal Council, Nilgiri Library, Friend-in-Need Society, Lawley Institute, and several other organisations. For many decades his tall erect figure was one of the landmarks of Ootacamund. The Gonsalves family owes everything to his outstanding merit and dauntless courage. Theirs was not the happy childhood of satisfied longings - the boys grew up in want and privation of every description. But when success came to Sheddy in Ootacamund, the horizon changed for his mother and brothers. After a long and useful career, he was the first of the five to pass into the Great Beyond. Very few who met Mr. S.J. Gonsalves knew the heart of gold behind the outward reserve. Though invariably gracious and courteous, he was a man of few words well thought over and better expressed, but on rare occasions he would expand. Family prestige was a religion with him, and he had the supreme satisfaction of living to see his efforts fulfilled into a great name for his distinguished house. Rest now, life's mission o'er - rest now for evermore – hushed by the whispering breeze - of the blue-hilled Nilgiris! ======~ 10 ~ ======[1.3] FR THOMAS GONSALVES, S.J. An eminent Jesuit Priest, Fr Thomas has the distinction of being the first Indian Principal of St. Aloysius College; also for many years procurator and minister. He was a scholar of Greek and the author of books on physics and religion. ------From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” Easter 1901 Thomas Gonsalves, B.A., '00, left Mangalore on Saturday, March 16th, to go to Shembaganore (Kodaikanal), where he entered the Novitiate of the Society of Jesus for the Mangalore Mission. June 1932 Fr T. Gonsalves, S.J., has been appointed Principal of the St. Aloysius' College, Fr.Ambruzzi continuing as Rector of the College as well as Superior of the Mission. August 1937 There is one aspect of the departure of the Italian Fathers at the head of the College which deserves mention. This is the second great act of renunciation of the Jesuit Mission of Mangalore. The first was the surrender of the flourishing Diocese of Mangalore to the Secular Clergy. And now a famous College passes at the zenith of its glory into the hands of the indigenous Jesuit Fathers. It will be their burden and privilege to maintain the high traditions of the great College and to lead it to greater triumphs. The first Indian Rector of this College is Father Gonsalves whose sagacity, even temper and statesmanship are a guarantee that the career of the College during the Indian regime will add another illustrious chapter to its history. October 1939 The evening of Sunday, the 8th October, witnessed a gay concourse of Aloysians at the St. Aloysius' College to felicitate the Rev. Fr. T. Gonsalves S.J., the first Aloysian Pincipal, on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of his Sacerdotal Ordination. No doubt the event had transpired a short while earlier and was kept perfectly secret in accordance with the Jesuit ideal of quiet self-effacement. But some of the friends of the good father caught scent of it, and surprised him into accepting this little demonstration in his honour. The idea of the organisers of this social must have won popularity with the Aloysian public, as is eveinced by the vast and well represented gathering that took place. It was meant to be as quiet as the occasion might permit, in consonance with the temperament of the good father. Therefore one remarkable feature was that there was no toasts and felicitations. However something had to be said in connection with the function itself, after Mr. V.P.M. Pinto, B.A.,L.T., the Secretary of the Association, came forward with a suitable words. He dwelt upon the salient features of the life of Fr. Gonsalves, his self-effacement, his high achievements, his Addisonian fund of humour, his musical talents, his popularity etc. Fr. Gonsalves, who had systematically avoided all speech-making in public up to now, was obliged to return the toast, and he showed that he was quite up to the mark in this respect as in every other. He explained the significance of a Jubilee of this kind to the life of a clergyman, and expressed his gratitude to his friends and the public for the sincere support that they had always been, and were still, according to the College, and for the appreciation of his services that they showed by mustering strong around him on this occasion. The Secretary too came in for his share in this return speech. The gathering was treated to a delectable variety of refreshments as also to sweet musical selections and songs by the College Orchestra, and broke up after a pleasant couple of hours. The function was voted a complete success. ======~ 11 ~ ======From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” April 1961 Rev. Fr. A banquet was held by the local Bar Association at the Lawley Institute in honour of Mr. L. Gonsalves, Advocate, who, now aged 78, had completed 50 years of practice at the Bar. May 1971 (Obituary : Mr. Lawrence Gonsalves) Mr. L. Gonsalves passed away at Ootacamund on 6th May, at the age of 83, after a short illness. His funeral, the next day, has the largest attendance in living memory, attracting all communities, Hindu, Muslim, European and Christian, whom he had served as advocate and friend for 60 years. He was buried in the Cemetery of St. Mary's Church, alongside with his brother, the late S.J. Gonsalves, who had been a member of the Madras Legislative Council, and his nephew-in-law, the late Mr. Claude Mascarenhas, Assistant Income Tax Commissioner. The Gonsalves brothers joined legal practice in Ooty in the early years of the century, when that practice was mostly with English solicitors. As the English left, they inherited their practice and the confidence which the European community had previously placed in their own countrymen. In some respects their fair complexion and mode of life qualified them for this. They belonged to the Gonsalves family counted among the three leading families of Mangalore. The eldest brother Dr. V.P. Gonsalves practised for 40 years at Battersea in England. The third brother Fr. Thomas Gonsalves was an institution not only filling up various rectorships but also being known to generations of college students for teaching physics in the most witty way possible. Mr. L. Gonsalves married Miss Gertrude Lobo, Sister of Mr. J.M. Lobo Prabhu, I.C.S. (Retd.), Ex M.P., in 1921. They have 5 children, the eldest, Mr. Eric Gonsalves I.F.S., Joint Secretary, External Affairs Ministry, well known for his diplommatic work on Far Eastern Problems. His second child, Margy, married Mr. Jerry Vaz, who, after retiring recently from the Post of Chief Engineer, Irrigation, to the Madras Government, is leaving for Africa on a high assignment. The couple will be missed in Madras, as Margy was the life and soul of the Mangalore Community in Madras, being President of its Association. The third child, Alfred, is now Ambassador at Laos, the youngest in his cadre, known for not only his ability but also for his affability. The fourth child, Renee, married Mr. Malcolm Noronha, who, after service as a high-ranking engineer in the Railway, returned to look after the tile-manufacture of the family. He is now also a much sought-after architect, having designed for many of the best houses and churches in Mangalore. The last child, Gladys, married Mr. Clifford Saldanha, now D.I.G. of Police with the Railway Board. Mr. L. Gonsalves had every reason to be proud of his family, including 19 grandchildren. Except Alfred, who could not come from Laos, all the other children were present at the funeral. ======~ 13 ~ ======Mr. L. Gonsalves will be remembered for long by individuals and institutions he had helped. He was leader and President of the Bar. To every one from Mangalore, who visited Ooty, he was a willing host. His life was exemplary; as a student he was not only a leader in studies but also in sports, being still remembered as a cricketer. He has therefore gone to his eternal rest as one loved, admired and respected. June 1974 (Obituary : Mrs. Gertrude Gonsalves) Mangalore suffered a tragic loss in the death of Mrs. Gertrude Gonsalves (Gertie Bai) on 23-6-1974. Daughter of Sylvester Lobo and Annie Albuquerque, she inherited from both these illustrious families a rare capacity for self sacrifice, hospitality and complete dedication to family and friends. She and her late husband, Mr. Lawrence Gonsalves, were literally an institution in Ooty, their house almost a caravanserai for visiting Mangaloreans. She was also the proud mother of two distinguished sons, and three beautiful daughters. Following in the footsteps of their uncle (her brother), Mr. J.M. Lobo Prabhu, I.C.S., Eric and Alfred entered the Indian Foreign Service. Eric is now India's Minster in Washington. Alfred, one of the youngest officers in the Service to become Head of a Mission (in Laos), is now a Joint Secetary in the Ministry of External Affairs, New . Margie married Jerry Vaz, who retired as Chief Engineer in the State of Madras, and is now a Senior Officer in Tanzania; Irene married Malcolm Noronha, Tile Manufacturer, Cosulting Engineer, and Architect, Mangalore; Gladys married Clifford Saldanha, D.I.G. of Police, C.B.I., New Delhi. The obsequies were conducted at her brother's residence, Chateau de Lou. The Vicar General offered the Mass. Mr. T.J. Lobo, Bar-at-Law, and Mr. S.L. Lobo, made poignant speeches to console the bereaved. His Lordship, the Bishop officiated at the burial service on 27-4-1974. Mr. Edmund Gonsalves, Retired District Judge, spoke at the Commemorative Mass offered on 29-6-1974. Ms. Gonsalves leaves behind a brilliant tradition of family service to the country, and a rare legacy of personal friendship with people in all walks of life. She will be remembered with tender affection by all who knew her. R.I.P.

He settled in Bangalore in the early years of the 20th century. The three children of Salvador and Juliana all spelt their surname Aranjo (this is probably more in keeping with the original Portuguese surname, where the ‘j’ is pronounced as ‘y’). Stan was Parish Priest of Robertsonpet, Fr Pat was Procurator of the Diocese) to appear for the B.A. (Hons) of Calcutta University. Both were successful, notably Fr Pat who secured the 1st place in the first class, with 67% marks, the highest ever obtained by a student. Fr Pat was subsequently appointed Principal of the newly-started St. Germain's European School, while Fr Stan was appointed Principal of the Campion High School, in K.G.F. His meritorious work won him an O.B.E. Mr. Rebello married Nellie, nee Mascarenhas, and passed on to his children his own record of public service. His son Reggie Rebello, I.A.S., was Additional Secretary for Defence, New Delhi, retired as Chief Secretary, Mysore, and is now the Managing Director of the Mysore Forest Corporation. From the biography in his mortuary card Harold was accidentally drowned, with two others, while bathing in the sea. They had gone out for a picnic with the members of the Senior Sodality of St. Aloysius College. Notwithstanding the supreme efforts that were made to save them, they were drowned. The three whose young lives - God so willing it - closed in such tragic circumstances were Aloysius Lobo, George D'Souza and Harold Saldanha. Harold was the youngest son of Peter Francis Xavier and Mary Magdalene Saldanha nee Noronha. He was a student of the Senior Intermediate Class. Service may be said to have been the keynote of his life, and its sum and substance. Service to the Church and of the Altar was his delight. He undertook even from the early age of about ten years to recite aloud the prayers of the congregation in his parish church during the principal mass, and he did it with a rare grace and unction. A similar service he performed for years every night in his own house. As the fruit of his active service, he and a few friends had thought out and organised a Total Abstinence League for young men; and he entertained high hopes of all the good it might, with God's blessing, achieve in Mangalore. Friends and relatives could count on his serviceableness, and he would willingly run on errands costing not a little discomfort to himself. He was ever a cheerful soul, and could toil and suffer with a never-failing smile. In his earlier years, he passed through many months of illness and enfeebled health. He bore them all with marvellous patience. But his ambition was service of the highest and holiest sort to which he made his youthful life a prelude. The service of God and man as a priest was the object of his humble prayers. Our Holy Mother the Church bids us pray for deliverance from a sudden and unprovided death. But a sudden death, by God's grace, need not be unprepared. And so we believe it was with Harold. His last days on earth appear to us in the light of a special preparation for a holy death. For several years he had been a devout member of Our Lady's Sodality in St. Aloysius College. He was an Altar Boy in the Milagres Church and remained so to the end. The annual retreat, which he made a few days before his death, had been one of unwonted earnestness and piety. On the last night of his life, he asked his dear mother to wake him early. He was up at half-past four, and directly he betook himself to the College Church for Mass and Communion, having made his confession the previous evening. Though he had to join the band of picnickers by a certain hour, he would allow no earthly reason to deprive him of daily Communion. Even the sad circumstances of his death seems to have been the result of an ineffective act of charity in rescuing a drowning companion. We have loved him in life; let us not cease until we have introduced him by our tears and prayers into the House of the Lord. ======~ 23 ~ ======[3.7] BERTHA SALDANHA and ALBERT PINTO They were married at Milagres Church, Mangalore, on 21 June 1939. From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” June 1939 (A Wedding in Mangalore) On the 21st June the Church of Our Lady of Miracles was the scene of a pretty wedding when Albert (son of Mr. Salvadore Pinto - a coffee planter of Sakleshpur and Mrs. Pinto) led to the Altar Bertha (daughter of the late Mr. P.F.X. Saldanha, coffee planter, and founder of Highland Coffee Works of Messrs. P.F.X. Saldanha & Sons, Mangalore, and Mrs. Saldanha). The bride was daintily dressed in a white georgette saree and a long flowing veil which was held in place by a wreath of orange blossoms, and she carried a lovely bouquet of Easter lilies. The bride was given away by her brother Mr. Callistus Saldanha. The flower girls were pretty little Misses Patricia Saldanha and Pamela Mascarenhas, nieces of the bride. Thomas Gonsalves, S.J., cousin of the bride, delivered a very appropriate and instructive sermon. After the ceremony the newly married couple, together with the guests, drove over to ‘Beaulieu’, the residence of the bride, where a recepton was held in their honour. Dr. L.P. Fernandes of Fr. Muller's Hospital, an old friend of the family, proposed the toast and spoke of the bride and bridegroom in glowing terms. He recalled many pleasant reminiscences and incidents of the past (and especially of the many happy hours he had spent in the company of the late Mr. & Mrs. P.F.X. Saldanha). He ended by wishing the bride and bridegroom a happy and prosperous married life. The happy couple were the recipients of numerous presents and congratulatory messages. He headed the list of successful students also in the High School Public Examination. He has all along been holding the top place in his class. His elder brother, Joseph, now studying in London, passed third in the Presidency in the Intermediate Examination. Gonsalves, the well-known Advocate of Ootacamund, who had a brilliant academical career and passed into the Indian Accounts Service, has resigned to work with his father as Advocate. He has apprenticed himself to Mr Bantwal Seetharama Rao of Madras. We are glad that he has decided to join the legal profession which will give ample scope for his undoubted talents. Government service is losing its charm with the advent of the National Government. This is good for the country which has been deprived hitherto of the services of some of its best men by the attraction of security of service, power and high salaries, offered by the Imperial and All-India services. At 9.30 a.m. in brilliant sunshine, the Bride arrived in a salloon car, elaborately decorated in a novel scheme of silver and white, with sprays like arum lilies and other flowers, seldom seen in Mangalore before. As she walked up to the Altar, leaning on the arm of her father and looking radiantly happy, she made a charming figure, gracefully draped in a lovely snow white georgette saree, flared with net border and embroidered in silver. Her silver brocade blouse and silver shoes, fitted in very well with the general scheme, while the tiara-shaped wreath of orange-blossoms, which kept her long flowing white tulle veil in position, and the beautiful bouquet of margareites with a sprinkling of asparagus which she carried, formed the rest of the items of a perfect trousseau carefully designed with an eye to taste and simplicity. Mr. Alexis Albuquerque, B.A., of Messrs. May & Baker Ltd., Bombay, supported the Bridegroom as the Bestman. Misses Nelly Gonsalves, the bride's sister, in salmon pink saree, and Thelma Abreu, in mushroom saree, and Patsy Saldanha and Yvonne Saldanha in white organdie frocks with wreaths of daisies, carrying artistically made flower baskets, formed the members of the bridal entourage, as bridesmaids and flower girls respectively. The service was fully choral and was presided over by the Rev. Fr. Denis Albuquerque, S.J., of the St. Aloysius' College. Rev. Fr. J.P. Lobo, S.J., of the St. Joseph's Seminary, Jeppoo, preached an instructive address to the newly married couple, followed by High Mass by Rev. Fr. Patrick Saldanha of the Bangalore Diocese. After the signing of the Register, the gathering adjourned to the Catholic Club, where a reception was held. After the Bride cut the handsome 3-tier wedding cake, brought down from Bangalore, Chevalier A.P.C. Albuquerque, K.S.G., B.A., B.L., Deputy Official Assignee, High Court, Madras, in felicitous terms, raised the toast of the Bride and the Bridegroom, enclosing their many qualities of head and heart and referring, in particular, to the Bride's accomplishments in the house-keeping line. The Bridegroom responded suitably. A select circle of relations and friends were later entertained to lunch at the Bridegroom's residence at Upper Bendore. In a humorous speech, Mr. Gratian Colaco proposed the toast dwelling on the Bridegroom's popularity and the Bride's charm. Mr. Lawrence Albuquerque made a fitting reply. To meet the newly-married couple, the bride's father gave a party at "Highland", his residence in Bangalore on Sunday evening, the 21st May. There were over 300 guests present including the local Mangalorean Catholic Community and other friends. Closely associated with Russia, he often acted as interpreter in talks between Nehru and Khruschev, and with the latter's successor Brezhnev. Positions held include: Ambassador to Laos (1969), High Commissioner to Tanzania (1978), High Commissioner to Egypt (1980) - and fittingly culminated his career as Ambassador to Moscow. Following retirement, his services were again requisitioned by government, when the break-up of the erstwhile Soviet Union needed to be handled with an insider's knowledge and expertise. He died of cancer in 1994. From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” March 1954 Mr. Alfred S. Gonsalves, son of Mr. & Mrs. L. India led the developing countries. Mr. Gonsalves said, "It must be admitted by all concerned at the outset that the UNDP's capacity to eradicate world poverty simply is not there and will not be there unless resources are multiplied several times. Recipient countries are obviously more interested than donor countries in the elimination of poverty. Industrial countries should come forward with greater contributions to the UNDP to enable it to implement approved projects. March 1978 Mr. Alfred Gonsalves, I.F.S. has been appointed Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania at Dar-es-Salaam. October 1980 Mr. Alfred Gonsalves, I.F.S. appointed Indian High Commissioner to Egypt. ======~ 39 ~ From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” December 1944 (In Memoriam : by Dr Mme Louella Lobo Prabhu) Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada, and the country, lost two great sons in the death of Mr. Alfred Gonsalves I.F.S. and Mr. Clifford Saldanha I.P.S. Coincidentally both were brothers in law and, sadly, died of cancer almost within a week of each other. Mr. Alfred Gonsalves was one of the earliest recruits into the Indian Foreign Service - by competition after Independence, though some recruits of the '40s and '50s came from other services or occasionally by outright nomination. Specialising in the Soviet Desk, he served in Asia, Europe, U.S. and Africa, but did his longest stint in Moscow, rising to be its Ambassador for possibly the longest innings of a serving officer in that key posting: one of the seniormost in the Foreign Service. His services were even requisitioned by government after retirement, when the break-up of the erstwhile monolithic Soviet Union needed to be handled with an insider's knowledge and expertise. He is survived by his doctor wife, Prabha, who was a graceful Ambassadress, earning good will for India by her free medical work in the countries to which her husband was posted.

Both will be remembered and missed by a grieving circle of relatives, friends and professional colleagues. ======~ 40 ~ [1.5.4] IRENE (RENEE) GONSALVES and MALCOLM NORONHA They were married at Rosario Cathedral, Mangalore, on 27 Dec 1951. From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” December 1951 A pretty society wedding was witnessed in Mangalore on the 27th of December 1951. The contracting parties were Mr. Malcolm Noronha, son of Mr. Sylvester Noronha, Tile Manufacturer, Mangalore, and Mrs. Noronha; and Mrs. Irene Gonsalves, daughter of Mr. Lawrence Gonsalves, Advocate, Ootacamund, and Mrs. Gonsalves. The bridegroom is the Engineer-in-Charge (Projects), G.I.P. Railway, and is now stationed in Bombay. The nuptials at the Cathedral were solemnised by His Lordship Bishop Feuga of Mysore as the Pastor of the Diocese from which the bride hails. He was assisted by their Lordships, Bishop Patroni of Calicut and Bishop Fernandez of Mangalore, who were so good to come in spite of many other engagements and poor health. The presence of the three prelates was unique. The homily to the couple was preached by the bride's paternal uncle, Rev. Fr. Thomas Gonsalves, S.J. of St. Joseph College, Bangalore, and the Mass was said by the bridegroom's maternal uncle, Rev. Fr. George Albuquerque, S.J., of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. There was a large assembly of priests in the sanctuary and the church was crowded. The Cathedral Choir, with Handel Manuel of Radio fame at the organ, was at its best. The reception was held at the spacious Don Bosco Hall which was artistically decorated. There were well over a thousand guests present including Their Lordships Bishops Feuga and Patroni, several friends from out- station, and practically the entire of Mangalore. Bishop Feuga announced that he had secured the Papal Blessing for the couple. The toast was proposed by the bride's maternal uncle, Mr. J.M. Noronha has been elected as Vice-President of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce, Mangalore. ======~ 41 ~ From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” December 1944 (A Loving Tribute to the late Mr. Malcolm Noronha : by Clarence Pais) With a heavy heart filled with sorrow and affection, let me write a few lines about a sincere friend who has just passed away on 15 June 1997. He is Mr. Malcolm Noronha. Malcolm was born on 22 July 1921 of illustrious parents with a golden spoon in his mouth. His father, the late Mr. Sylvester Noronha was a successful tile manufacturer and a great musician. His mother, Mrs. Juliana Noronha, was a generous and affectionate housewife. She was the sister of the late Mr. Felix P.F. Albuquerque off revered memory. Malcolm's only sister Melanie was married to Dr. O.G.C. Vaz. The latter is a popular and successful doctor at Madras. Malcolm's only brother was the late Mr. Justice Dionysius Noronha. The latter predeceased Malcolm. Malcolm was married to one of the prettiest brides of the community. She is Rene and she is the daughter of the late Mr. Lawrence Gonsalves, Advocate of Ootacamund, and her mother, Mrs. Gertie Gonsalves, was the sister of Mr. J.M. Lobo Prabhu, I.C.S. Retd. Malcolm's marriage with Rene was a great success and the two were a model couple for all of us. They have 7 children - 2 sons and 5 daughters. Christopher is an architect and consulting engineer, and the other son Luke is an upcoming paediatrician in the United States. Malcolm had a brilliant academic career and carried away most of the prizes while in school as also in college. He joined the Guindy Engineering College and was placed 7th in the All India Competitive Examination for the Indian Railway Service of Engineers. Malcolm started life by joining as an officer in the Indian Railways and started work at Assam. His work after the partition of India was challenging and arduous and it could rightly be said that he was an architect of modern India in the field or department of Railways during the post-partition period. On retirement, Malcolm successfully carried out the family business as a tile manufacturer. He was elected and became the President of the Western India Tile Manufacturers Association. But his chief debut on retirement was to use his creative talent by taking to Architecture and Construction Engineering. He walked into this field as a duck takes to the water. He was soon patronised, not only by the Mangalorean Catholic community, but also by the Hindus and Muslims alike. He reconstructed our family house at Bejai, designed and built a bungalow in my Priya Flavia Estate in Sakleshpur Taluk, and also designed my guest house in Sakleshpur town. All these individual items of work were followed up by a giant step when he was made the standing Architect by Mr. Vinaya Hegde, son of Mr. Justice K.S. Hegde, the latter of the Supreme Court of India. Mr. Vinaya Hegde, as the Managing Director of the Nitte Engineering Complex, entrusted the construction work of his colleges and engineering concerns at Nitte in Dakshina Kannada as also in Goa and Malcolm was his right- hand man and accomplished every job with efficiency and trustworthiness. Malcolm was a voracious reader and had plenty of humour. He used to laugh loudly and made others happy and join him in laughter and joy. Malcolm had a generous hand which went out to dole out plentifully to every deserving and poor person. The large number of persons that attended the funeral and the fact that His Lordship the Bishop of Mangalore said the Mass and officiated at the funeral, is a proof of Malcolm's popularity and charity to the poor and needy. Malcolm's family life was a great success. His dear wife Rene and Malcolm loved reach other till the end, and Rene was with Malcolm through thick and thin. I entirely agree with Dr. Madame Louella Lobo Prabhu that the immortal words of Kipling aptly apply to Malcolm, and one can say with certainty that Malcolm was "one who could move kings and yet not lose the common touch". The Catholic Association of South Kanara is particularly grateful to Malcolm for his services as its former Vice President for many years, and for the role he played during the jubilee of the Association, and for his support to the cause of establishing a house for the Missionaries of Charity founded by Bharat Ratna Mother Teresa in Mangalore. May Malcolm's soul rest in peace. ======~ 42 ~

Saldanha, I.P.S., on the occasion of Republic Day this year. Mr. Saldanha is the son of Mrs. Ivy Saldanha and the late Mr. F.M. Saldanha, coffee planter, Falnir, Mangalore. Born in 1929, he was educated in St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, up to the Intermediate. He then went to Madras where he took his B.A. Honours Degree in Chemistry in 1950 from the Loyola College. He qualified for the Indian Police Service on the rseults of the All-India Central Services Examination in 1952 and was appointed to the Service in 1953. After completion of his initial police training at Mt. Abu, he was sent to Andhra Pradesh and served as Assistant Superintendent of Police in two districts there from 1955 to 1958. He was promoted to the rank of Superintendent of Police in 1958 and he worked in this capacity in three districts of Andhra Pradesh, where his work was marked by his vigorous drive against crime and the effective maintainance of law and order. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs selected him in 1963 for deputation to the Union Territory of Goa, Daman & Diu, and he was posted as Additional Senior Superinendent of Police, Goa, for a short spell of six months, when he was in charge of the Criminal Investigation Branch and the Intelligence wing of the Goa Police. In 1964, he was appointed as Senior Superinendent of Police in over-all charge of the Police Organisation in the Union Territory. During his three years stay in Goa as Senior Superintendent of Police, he went about the task of re-organising the Police Force and changing the set-up from the old Portuguese pattern to the Indian pattern. His tenure in Goa was full of all kinds of problems, especially political and labour. The subversive forces, which were at the time, resulted in the famous Goa Conspiracy Case, wherein a numer of buildings were blown up by dissatisfied elements. He took up the investigation with relentless energy and ultimately brought the culprits to book. The antinational forces in the Territory were completely wiped out as a result of this case which was successfully prosecuted in a court of law. His effective handling of the labour unrest in Marmagoa Harbour and the many anti-Government agitations in the Territory at the time won him many laurels. After a useful stay in this territory, he was transferred to the Ministry of Railways in 1967 and posted to New Delhi as Assistant Inspector General, Railway Protection Force, where he continued to do excellent work in helping to build up the Force and improve its working. He has been promoted as Deputy Inspector-General in the same organization and continues to work in that capacity to date. The President, in recognition of his meritorious service, was pleased to award him the Police Medal in his 17th year of service, which recognition normally is granted to a Police Officer only in his 20th year of service or after. ======~ 44 ~ September 1980 The President of India has awarded the Police Medal for distinguished service, on the occasion of Independence Day 1980, to Mr. Saldanha, Additional Inspector General of Police (Administration), Hyderabad. Noronha (62) who died of cerebral thrombosis on 6th April, and Mr. R.J. Rebello, IAS (Retd.) who died of coronary thrombosis on the 10th. Mr. Noronha had retired as a Judge of the Karnataka High Court on 8th February. Mr. Rebello, who was born on the super-time scale of the IAS, retired a Chief Secretary, Karnataka State, in 1974. Their lives were well-lived, well- spent and well-rewarded. Bth held positions probably as yet unattained by anyone in the community. Both Mr. Noronha and Mr. Rebello hailed from illustrious families of the District. Life came to them on a silver salver. Mr. Noronha had his education in St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, and the Law College, Madras. Mr. Rebello was educated in Switzerland and England. Both were outstanding students and prize-winners. Mr. Noronha was recruited as a District Munsif at the comparatively early age of 27 - a record. After a distinguished career in the Judicial Department, he was elevated to the High Court Bench in 1969. Mr. Rebello, who had a stint in the Bombay (Maharashtra) State and later at the centre, has served as Divisional Commissioner and then as Chief Secretary, Karnataka State. After retirement, he was appointed Chairman, State Forest Industries Corporation. Both were however unfortunate in that they were unable to enjoy a long retirement - "friend to life's decline, retreat with care". High encomiums were paid to Mr. Noronha and Mr. Rebello by their Chiefs. Mr. G.K. Govinda Bhat, the Chief Justice, in a reference to the High Court on April 8th, said that Mr. Noronha was of a genial temperament and unassuming manners. He was a true Christian. He believed sincerely in the essential tenets of Christianity. The Advocate-General, Mr. Byra Reddy, said that Mr. Noronha was an able judge and a sportsman. Similar tributes were paid to Mr. Rebello. Mr. Umashanker Dikshit, the Governor of Karnataka, in a condolence message to Mrs. Rebello, stated that Mr. Rebello had served the State with distinction. The Prime Minister, Mr. Morarji Desai, has expressed his grief in the passing away of Mr. Rebello who had once served in the Bombay Civil Service. These eminent men were like two stars shining in the firmament of the community. They were like Castor and Pollux before whom the other stars "hid their diminished heads". To use a biblical simile, they were lie the good servant to whom the nobleman gave a gold piece, bidding him trade till he came back, and who on his master's return produced ten gold coins saying "Lord thy gold piece has earned en gold pieces". And the nobleman said to him, "Well done thou good servant. Because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many, enter into the joy of thy master". (St. Matthew, xxv, 14-22 & St. Luke, ix, 12-19). Need we doubt that Mr. Noronha and Mr. Rebello were good and faithful servants and that they have already entered into the joy of the Lord? The memory of Mr. Noronha and Mr. Rebello will long remain in benediction. When will we see their like? ======~ 48 ~ From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore”

Mrs Ophelia Rebello : 80 on 2 April 2006 Ophelia was born on 2 April 1926, the fourth of 6 children of Francis Lobo and Lily Pais. Her father, who was in government service, retired as Deputy Collector and was honoured with the title of Rao Sahib at his retirement in 1939. Her mother was a daughter of Martin Pais, famous wine merchant and philanthropist. The other children of Francis & Lily were John Joseph Denis – Brigadier J.J.D. Lobo – who died in January 2005, aged 89, Emily (who married Felician D’Souza, Senior Asst. Commissioner), Octavia (who married Cyril Albuquerque, tile merchant), Dr. Lawrence, and Dr. Marie (who married Bennett Wilson, a Tamil Christian of Ceylon, and settled in England). On 12 January 1950, at Milagres Church, Ophelia married Reginald Rebello. Reginald, who was educated at Cambridge, joined government service and was absorbed into the IAS after Independence. After holding various key positions, he retired as Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka, in 1974. During his various postings, Ophelia, a B.A., B.Ed., taught at different schools. Reginald had an untimely death in 1977. He was just 60. Three years later Ophelia ws invited by the Chief Minister to join the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) and carried out her tenure very efficiently. Ophelia and Reginald had four children – Peter, Joan, Margaret, and Maria. Peter, an engineer from IIT, Kharagpur, has settled in California, where he runs his own business, supplying equipment for satellite, etc. Joan, B.A., B.Ed. is married to Ernest Wilhelm, a German, and settled at Munich. Margaret, also B.A., B.Ed., is a Montessori teacher and has worked in Bangalore and in the United States. Maria, a doctor, graduated from St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore, in 1983, securing the first rank and seven gold medals. She is married to Briance Mascarenhas (a professor of business management); they are settled in the United States. Ophelia celebrated her 80th birthday at the Dolphin Bay Club Hall at the Summer Sands beach resort with all her children and close relations present. A toast was proposed by her son Peter, with additional felicitatory addresses by her siblings Emily and Dr. Lawrence; and she was presented with mementos by her daughters, nieces and nephews. Her sister Octavia read out a poem – her own composition. ======~ 49 ~ ======CHILDREN OF: [2.4.3] HETTY REBELLO and PATRICK MATHIAS Patrick Mathias was a doctor in the Army Medical Corps - initially with the British army in India, and, post-Independence, with the Indian army. Col. Patrick F. Mathias, Army Medical Corps, Poona, has been awarded the gold cross Pro Ecclsia et Pontifice by the Pope. July 2004 (Obituary Tribute to Patrick Mathias : by his daughter Dr Margaret Mathias Burghagen) My father was a born teacher. He loved to teach and he loved to teach us, his three children. He would talk to us for hours about everything under the sun - from atom bombs to zombies. These sessions were not only educative but also fun. He had a tremendous sense of humour and I can still hear him literally roaring with laughter at a good joke. My father was a good, God-fearing, upright and sincere man; and above all, he was uncompromising with his principles. He had a deep sense of justice and fair play all through his life. Patrick Francis Mathias was born in Salem in 1917, the second son of the well-known surgeon Piedade Felician Mathias (Kaiser-I-Hind Medal, O.B.E.) and Josephine née Lobo. From 1924 to 1932, he attended Montfort School, Yercaud, an exclusive boarding school run by the Brothers of St. Gabriel. Here he excelled in studies as well as sports. He passed the "intermediate" from St. Joseph's, Bangalore; then studied medicine at Madras Medical College, specializing in radiology, and culminating in the DMRD, London. In 1944, he married Hester Marie Joan Rebello at Milagres Church, Mangalore. My mother was the beautiful and talented daughter of Albin Richard Rebello (OBE) and Nellie née Mascarenhas. She was born in Bombay in 1918. As my grandfather was then employed at the League of Nations, she spent her early life in Geneva. She was educated in England (Bath), and in Yercaud, and spoke French like a native. She graduated as a gold medallist from Loreto College, Calcutta, and then trained to be a teacher. After marriage, she devoted herself to the education and upbringing of her three children. She was never authoritarian and she showed us how one can be friends with one's children. My mother was an artist - and I take great pleasure in looking at her paintings and batiks. My father was a radiologist in the army for most of his career. He joined the Indian Medical Service (IMS) and served during World War II in Iraq. After Independence, the British IMS was replaced by the Indian Army Medical Corps (IAMC). His most interesting assignment was as Professor of Radiology at the Armed Forces Medical College, Poona. This was especially interesting because not only did he enjoy teaching the medical students, but he also did a lot of research, built up a film library and published over 100 articles in international Radiology journals. Before he retired, he was Professor of Radiology, St. John's Medical College, London. My mother died on Feb 17, 2003 and my father on June 30, 2004. Born to Albert and Therese Gonsalves on 3rd March 1932 as their 12th and youngest son, Arthur, after his early schooling, embarked on an adventurous career at sea to board the T.S. Dufferin in 1948. Working in various ascending capacities, he rose to the rank of Marine Chief Engineer in the early sixties with the Hong Kong Shipping Co. He sacrificed his command at sea to anchor ashore with Peggy on 8th May 1963. An innings with Bridge and Roof Co. of the Balmer Lawrie Group took this happy family to places in Bengal and Bihar for twelve years. He donned the mantle of burden to take on the responsibility at his hometown in Mangalore when his older brothers were called to their heavenly abode. In Mangalore, he held the unique distinction of being the only Non Exclusive Surveyor to represent practically all the Classification societies of the Shipping World. We are aware of his commitment to Far East Agencies, the thrill and relaxation he took in being a Coffee Planter, the never-give-up challenge by taking over new ventures like Premier Distributors, and the innovative talent as Naval Architect and Builder of Modern Marine Crafts in Mangalore. We have today assembled to convey our last respects to _King Arthur_, the title to which he was amused and comfortable when we all joked. This title he attained not by coincidence but by the qualities he was gifted with, developed, possessed and practised. Can you ever recollect a time if he ever got angry with you? Do you recall that everytime that there was a tragic or joyous occasion in a big or small, rich or poor family, he was always there to say Hello and share time with you. There was always the encouragement and an optimistic attitude to bring out the hidden talent within his family, as well as for an outsider. He had the capacity to diffuse a difficult situation with a solution with apt wit and humour. Above all he was noble to be called an Officer and Gentleman, because inspite of his senior position and experience, he was friendly, accessible, and would stand up for his juniors. I have had the personal privilege to ezperience Arthur tendering many an aplogy all because he was at the helm of affairs and for the chair that he occupied. Yes, things will not be the same at the Gonsalves residence. He will also be missed as the colourful Past President of the Merchant Navy Officers Association, as the dynamic Fellow and Past President of the Indian Institute of Engineers, Mangalore Chapter, as an active member of the Coffee Planters Guild, as the fund raiser for the Fr. Mullers Charitable Institute, as a benevolent Donor for the Infant Jesus Shrine, socailly as the lovable love at the Kanara and Mangalore Clubs, as the handsome and energetic dancer at the Christmas and New Year Balls, and of course, the dearest to him all, the personal pride and interest he took in running the affairs as the present and ruling President of the Rotary Club of Mangalore. Let us thank God for the small mercies given to us by bringing into our midst Arthur G. Gonsalves where he meant so much to each one of us present in our own way. We pray to the Almighty that Arthur, having excluded all worldly things from his heart and life is now worthy to take a place in the choir of Angels. May His Soul Rest in Peace. ======~ 60 ~ ======CHILDREN OF: [2.10.1] HECTOR LOBO and GERTRUDE D'SOUZA A B.Sc. from St Xavier's College, Bombay, Hector Lobo joined Cipla Laboratories, then did a course in Industrial Management at Manchester & Birmingham, then did an MBA at Chicago, after which he joined the pharmaceutical firm, 'Smith, Klein & French' in that city. The month of May 2007 marked the tenth death anniversary of Cecil Lobo [2.10.2]. I took the opportunity to reproduce the text of the funeral eulogy read by his brother Hector at the funeral mass at St Joseph’s Church, Terre Haute, Indiana. The eulogy provides reminiscences of the lives of Hector, Cecil, and their cousin Wilfred [2.5.7], all of whom set out from Bombay to the United States in the late 1950s and made the New World their home. We are gathered here to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of someone very dear to us all. He was especially dear to me because he was my brother. He was nearly two years younger than I, and we were the first two of four living sons of Anthony and Priscilla Lobo. Our two younger brothers, Yvo and Father Ivan, live in India. Cecil and I grew up together, along with our younger cousin and neighbour Wilfred Rebello, in Bandra, which at that time was a beautiful and heavily Christian suburb of Bombay, the largest city on the mid-west coast of India. He was known to his family and friends around the world as Cecil, to his friends in the U.S. as Cecil, and to his students as Dr. Lobo. We attended a leading Catholic Jesuit high school in Bandra and a Catholic Jesuit college in Bombay. Cecil and his cousin Wilfred decided to pursue careers in engineering, which in the early 1950s was a prized profession in India. They went off togther to an engineering college in Ahmedabad and worked for a brief period as engineers in India. In 1957 Wilfred decided to pursue higher studies in engineering in the U.S. at Purdue University in Indiana. Cecil made the same decision in 1958, and gained admission, and a teaching assistantship, at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana for the Master’s degree program in Civil Engineering. There he met Frank D’Souza, from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who hailed from Goa, a former Portuguese colony in India. In 1959 I decided to follow Cecil and Wilfred for study abroad, but sailed for England for higher studies in Business Administration. Cecil and Frank obtained their Master’s degree and joined Wilfred at Purdue University for their doctorate. The three of them rented a little cottage on the Purdue campus at West Lafayette. This was the beginning of a lifelong friendship of the Three Musketeers from Purdue, even though they settled in different parts of the country – Cecil in Terre Haute, Wilfred in Clifton, Virginia, and Frank in Chicago, Illinois. I joined the three musketeers in 1964 and visited them in their cosy little home in the Purdue campus. Despite their heavy schedules, they found time to relax together and have fun, as all three had a great sense of humor. Competition was keen in the kitchen department for the positions of head chef and dishwasher. Even though I was senior in age to my brother Cecil and my cousin Wilfred, they were senior to me in the U.S. by 6 to 7 years. It is thanks to their advice and support that I completed my studies in the U.S. and made this country my home. The Three Musketeers from Purdue all became distinguished Professors of Engineering: Cecil at Rose Hulman in Terre Haute, Wilfred at Marquette University in Milwaukee, and Frank at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Cecil and Frank found their calling in the teaching profession, and went from distinction to distinction at their respective institutions and professional engineering societies. Tragically, after 31 years at IIT, Frank was stricken with illness and was laid to rest in October 1994. The other two musketeers rallied to his family’s support and served as pall bearers at his funeral. Little did anyone dream that barely 2½ years later we would be burying another musketeer. In the words of Frank’s widow Cecilia, who is with us today: I have lost another major link with my Purdue heritage. We are also very fortunate to have with us today the youngest musketeer Wilfred Rebello. ======~ 62 ~ ======Cecil was always a superior and conscientious student. When he chose teaching as a career he pursued it with integrity and devotion to his profession. He won numerous awards for excellence in teaching during his 34 years on the faculty of Rose-Hulman. While he was typically unassuming about many of his accomplishments, he took special pride in honors bestowed on him by his own students. He was always very proud of his college and his adopted city. After 34 years he was indeed a most senior member of the Rose faculty as well as of the Indian community of Terre Haute. Cecil and Sylvia were raised in the best tradition of Catholics in India. They were exemplary Catholics, very active in their own church, recited the rosary daily, and passed on these values to their children. Cecil loved music. As a youth he had taken piano lessons for several years and, in recent years, he and Sylvia sang in the church choir. They took a very active part in the affairs of the Indian community of Terre Haute. Their reputation as wonderful and gracious hosts had spread far and wide, and guests would be charmed by Cecil’s witty and dramatic skill as a raconteur and Sylvia’s outstanding skill in the culinary department. Whatever Cecil did, whether it be entertaining or dancing or party games or sports, he did it with a grace and style, wit and charm that never failed to enliven the proceedings. As bachelors we had travelled together in India, the U.S. and the Carribean. Our most recent trip together was to the Olympic Games in Atlanta last summer, along with his two sons Colin and Trevor. This is a memory I will always treasure. Our two families have shared every major event in our families. Dearest Sylvia, Colin and Trevor, you have always come to our aid in times of need. Please rest assured that you can always count on our support in the future. We pray that God will bless and comfort you in your hour of need, and that Cecil will continue to guide and protect you from his heavenly abode. I will conclude with a poem in tribute to Cecil: He lived for his wife, he lived for his sons – he spared no effort till his work was done He lived for his students at Rose Hulman – as a dedicated teacher he was second to none He gave an example of good Christian living With his warmth and hospitality, he was always giving God alone knows why his time had come – rest dearest loved one, Thy Will be done. ======~ 63 ~ ======[2.10.5] FR IVAN LOBO

Born in 1945, Ivan completed school (Bombay) in 1961, B.A. and Philosophy (Nagpur) in 1966, Theology and B.D. (Rome) in 1971, B.Ed (Bombay) in 1974, and M.A. (Nagpur) in 1980. As a seminarian he served for one year at the Nagpur Child-Guidance, Vocational and Psychological Centre, under Fr A.J. Malin S.V.D., a professional psychologist and counselor, also a specialist for the mentally challenged, Fr. A.J. Malin S.V.D, at the Nagpur Child-Guidance, Vocational and Psychological Centre. He was ordained on 18 October 1970. Following his return from Rome in 1971, Archbishop Raymond of Nagpur appointed him to the staff of St Francis de Sales High School, Nagpur – and he taught there for the next 36 years, the last twelve (1995-2007) as Principal. An old student reminiscences: Fr. Ivan is probably the only teacher who has many ex-students from India and Abroad still visiting him even after 36 and more years. Many keep writing to him. GIFTED WITH A FANTASTIC AND PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY, HE NOT ONLY REMEMBERS THEIR NAMES, WHERE THEY SAT IN WHICH CLASS, MANY INTERESTING INCIDENTS, EVEN THE YEAR THEY PASSED SCHOOL WHICH SOME OF THEM HAVE FORGOTTEN. A minimum of 2 ex-students a week had been coming to visit him for over 36 years, and still continue to do so. These included former Union Minister and now Congress General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, and Anees Ahmed, Cabinet Minister Maharashtra and Rajkumar Hirani of Munnabhai fame. Besides, very many of his students are, masters and luminaries from sports and games to science and technology, medicine and law in every corner of the globe. Their letters, their visits, are a real tonic for Father. Reviving memories and reliving the past brings him immense joy. For this matter, any ex-student, however old, gets him excited. EMINENT EX-STUDENTS were accorded a befitting reception and felicitation when they visited school. These ‘Old Boys’ included Archbishops and Bishops, Lt.-Generals and Major -Generals, a Vice Admiral and Air Vice-Marshal, Judges and Ministers, Priests in Nagpur and around the country, even abroad, Director General of Police, Scientists and Physicians and Engineers and experts in every field in India and the world - all in love with their Alma Mater. Fr. Ivan was happy to meet and greet, Ashok N. Katti from the USA, an old ex-student, and grateful for his extraordinary generosity and love for his Alma Mater from which he passed out in 1947. Fr Ivan also helped the Old Boys Association (OBA) to organize a Fellowship-Nite every year in the school Premises, besides other functions by them. He maintained contact and cordial relation not only with ex- students, but also with Parents, Officials and people in position, many of whom would be helpful to school as and when required. Other priests in the Diocese and people also approached him for help with their problems by using his good contacts. ****************************************************************************** ***************************************************************************~ 64 ~ *** THE FOURTH GENERATION Part III : The Saldanha Family ======CHILDREN OF: [3.2.1] XAVIER SALDANHA and SHIRIN BRITO They were married at Milagres Church on 30 Dec 1964. Michael Saldanha graduated from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore (winning numerous prizes in elocution and sports) and Government Law College, Bombay (winning the President's Gold Medal). He also did a post-graduate course from the Bombay School of Journalism, securing a gold medal – presented by Dr Radhakrishna, President of India. Following stints with the Times of India and the Indian Express (under Frank Moraes), he was appointed editor of Bankers’ Times, holding this position from 1964 to 1969, while simultaneously having joined the Bar. During his lawyer days, he wrote articles on the state of the legal profession, with the objective of improving the bar and the judiciary. In 1990, he was elevated to the High Court Bench. In 1994, he was transferred to the Karnataka High Court. His judgements have been marked for their vision, for their being relevant to the times, and for providing real and meaningful relief. Several have been published by the Harvard Law Review and other international law journals. In 1996, he was adjudged one of the world's ten best judges by the US-based International Jurists Association. Following his retirement in 2004, he has been a guest lecturer at Universities, Law Schools, and Institutes of Management throughout the world. His talks cover a wide spectrum of the field of law: Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Matrimonial Law, Tax Laws, etc. Michael Saldanha was President of the Catholic Association of South Kanara from 2004 to 2010. ------From ‘Wikipedia’ Although retired from official duty, he conducted an unofficial investigation into the 2008 attacks on Christians in southern Karnataka and was outspoken against the protests and published a report in early 2011 investigating the attacks on Christian institutions and people, written up after he visited 413 locations, examined 673 witnesses and 2,114 victims of the attacks.[2] He was strongly critical of the state government and police in his Saldanha Commission report and described the attacks as "state-sponsored terrorism" and concluded that "the attacks and incidents which took place were instigated and pre-planned. They were not only supported by the state but were also covered up for by the state."[2] He was also critical of the official Bharatiya Janata Party government investigation and report into the attacks by B. K. Somasekhara, given that he said there was photographic and video evidence of police misconduct which the government commission had not identified.[3] ======~ 66 ~ From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” August 1961 (St Aloysius College Students Union) At a meeting of the Students' Union of the St. Aloysius' College, Mangalore, held on July 17, the following were elected as office bearers for the year :- President: Michael Saldanha, III B.A. General Sec.: Veirus Colaco, II B.A. Joint Sec.: M.N. Thimmayya, III B.Com. Under Sec.: Jaywant Nayak, II B.Com. Asst. Sec.: Umesh Shenoy, III B.Com. October 1961 Mr. Michael Saldanha of St. Aloysius' College won the Abner Elocution Shield for being the best speaker at an inter-collegiate elocution competition held at the Y.M.C.A. Hall, Mangalore. December 1963 Mr. Michael Saldanha, B.A., son of Mrs. Enid Saldanha, Falnir, Mangalore, and student, Government Law College, Bombay, led the Bombay University Team which won the Trophy at the All-India Inter-University Youth Festival held in Delhi in November. November 1964 Mr. Michael Saldanha, B.A., LL.B., son of Mrs. Enid Saldanha, Falnir, Mangalore, has been enrolled as an Advocate of the Bombay High Court. July 1974 Michael, B.A., LL.B., son of Mrs. Enid Saldanha of Falnir, Mangalore, and the late Mr. John Antony Saldanha, Collector, is one of the youngest advocates to be appointed Assistant Government Pleader by the High Court of Bombay. Mr. Saldanha was a junior of Mr. Rajni Patel and specialises both in Constitutional and Criminal Law. ======~ 67 ~ From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” November 1990 (Justice Michael F. Saldanha) Justice Michael F. Saldanha was born at Belgaum on the 13th of February 1942. He had his High School and University studies at the St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. He was a brilliant student all through winning a number of prizes and gold medals in studies and sports. At the Law College also he stood first and won gold medals. In Journalism, he was awarded the President's Gold Medal by the President of India. He started his legal practice in 1964 and specialised himself in Criminal Law, and lad appeared before the High Court in highly contested areas in Customs, Central Excise, and Commercial disputes. He achieved a reputation both with the Judges and the Bar for displaying fairness and integrity in the thousands of cases he had conducted. It was commitment to devote all his free time to free legal advice and to assist the poor and needy litigants. He boldly appeared against Advocates who have been guilty of professional misconduct. This made him very popular in all the classes of the people of Maharashtra. Considering his intelligence, ability, integrity, and his successful career at the Bar, he was elevated to the Bench on 30th July 1990. He was facilitated by the Kanara Catholic Association, Bombay, on 23rd Sep 1990. Speaking on the occasion as the President of the function, Mr. Justice Lentin (Retd.) said that he was very glad that the Govt. recognised and acknowledged the abilites of Justice Saldanha and appointed him to the Bench of the High Court. A very big gathering offered him rich tributes at the K.C.A. Hostel, Bandra. Mr. Justice Saldanha replied to the address suitably expressing gratitude and acknowledging the largesse of the heart of the K.C.A. and the community, acknowledging his debt and worth to his home town and College. He vouched to continue to champion all causes clamouring for justice. Mr. G.M. Coelho, Vice President, proposed a vote of thanks. The Catholic Association of D.K., Mangalore, congratulates Mr. Justice Michael Saldanha, on his appointment as a Judge of the High Court, Bombay, and wishes him great success in his future career. We pray God to elevate him as the Chief Justice of the High Court. August 1996 (Justice Michael F. Saldanha wins kudos) The Sunday edition of the Times of India, Bangalore, carried an interesting profile on the Bangalore High Court's boy wonder, Justice Michael Saldanha, presently the only Catholic on the Karnataka Bench. He has been rightly praised for his record disposal of cases and his activist style of work. He is certainly a judge who is secular and pragmatic. ======~ 68 ~ From the archives of the community magazine “Mangalore” March 1997 (One of the ten best judges in the world) The honorable Mr. Justice Michael F. Saldanha has been chosen as one of the world's ten best judges by the U.S.-based International Jurists Association for 1996. He is the first Indian to be so nominated. It is a recognition of the high standards he maintained and the reformation he tried to bring about in the system. Judge Saldanha has been known in Bombay and Bangalore for never compromising on his convictions. He has brought to Bangalore not just an awareness of the environment, but makes it his business to make the authorities accountable for their responsibilities. Hi suo moto order in the battle to save Cubbon Park is only the beginning of his crusade. This magazine cherishes the forthrightness of a judge like him and we offer our congratulations. May 1998 (Personalities - Justice Michael Saldanha : by Dr Louella Lobo Prabhu) I delivered the second Mother Josephine Memorial Oration at St Anne's M.Ed. College of Education, and a courtesy to its organiser, Rev. Dr. Sister Lydia Fernandes. I try to attemnd lectures by those who delivered it subsequently. This year's Orator was my childhood friend, Mr. Justice Michael Saldanha, the most high profile Judge of the Karnataka High Court, though he is (comparatively) one of its newer entrants. He has made waves for his fantastically quick disposal of cases - he does not allow adjournments, and finds one hearing, along with the paper work submitted with it, adequate for his arrival at a judicial decision. He is an activist judge who is environmentally conscious and has done much to get the State Govt moving on matters like cleaning the Ulsoor Lake and Cubbon Park, also finishing undone sections of vital arterial roads in the city. As a man, he is endearingly baby-faced, with a wide expanse of forehead, expressive eyes and mouth, with a constant change of facial expression in conversation. In delivering a set speech, which he did for the bulk of his Oration, he does sound as he must on the bench. His lively wit and stock of legal knowledge, make his off-the- cuff interventions more lively than a set speech. He is ewarmhearted and spontaneous. As our association goes back to oue teens in Bombay, at the home of my remarkable grandaunt Frances Saldanha, we greeted each other with a hug, though I walked in on pre-lecture refreshments he was having with the senior nuns of the Apostolic Carmel. I was the first ‘Respondent’ after his speech. When I mentioned that wives follow husbands on transfer, but the reverse is seldom true, he said that in one of his cases, a husband arranged a reciprocal transfer for his wife. She refused to go, as it involved the loss of her seniority as Head of Department. His judicial decision went in her favour. Michael did squeeze time in his hectic schedule to call on me during his one day in town. He took one of my paintings as a keepsake, and gave me something with which he seemed to be pleased: his appearance in two pages of one SOCIETY issue. The issue shows him playing with a rather unusual breed of dog: Daschund with Spaniel ears. For a judge and his wife (Elsa nee Heredia, my contemporary at Sophia College, Bombay), indicates that he has become one of the glitterati. He also appears frequently on the back pages in the Times of India, Bangalore edition. I was touched to read that he and Elsa carry food for strays in the park on their morning walks. My own ‘Chateau’, with its 3½ acres of private orchard in the heart of town, is a sanctuary for stray dogs, cats and cows, who gravitate to it as if they know by instinct it is an animal sanctuary. Though I guess it involves praising myself too, I like to think that those who love music and animals are necessarily good human beings, and God's own people! ======~ 69 ~ ======CHILDREN OF: [1.2.2.1] PAMELA MASCARENHAS and JOSEPH MATHIAS Joseph was the youngest of 14 children of Dr Piedade Felician Mathias and Josephine Lobo. Dr P.F. Mathias was a distinguished medical practitioner. As Health Officer in the Madras Presidency, he was variously posted eg. Tanjore, Salem and Bellary. At one time, he was Personal Assistant to the Surgeon General, the first Indian to hold that appointment. He retired as Professor of Surgery and Superintendent of the Royapuram Hospital, Madras; a ward in this hospital has been named after him. He was a recipient of the Kaiser-I-Hind Medal (1920) and an O.B.E. (1929). As a medical officer, Piedade was variously posted and his children were born at different places. The eldest child Ethel was born in Mangalore; Winnie in Tanjore; Prescie, Jessie, Noel, Pat, Theo and Eric in Salem; Michael, Charles, Joyce & Maurice in Bellary; Joseph in Bangalore. At the recent Convocation held by the Madras University, he was awarded three gold medals and two other prizes in recognition of his outstanding performance in the M.Sc. Physics examination. He was also awarded the P. Subramaniam prize by the Madras Christian College. Obituary Tribute from the University of Buffalo Richard Gonsalves, professor emeritus of physics, died Dec. 19 after an illness of several months. Gonsalves was a theoretical particle physicist who did groundbreaking work in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). In 1980, only a few years after the introduction of QCD as the quantum field theory of strong interactions of quarks and gluons, Gonsalves published in Physical Review Letters his most noteworthy paper, pioneering the analytic calculation of higher-order QCD corrections to electron- positron scattering. This work enabled important tests of QCD when compared with experimental data, and was crucial for establishing this new theory. He later expanded his highly influential work to the study of the carriers of the weak nuclear force, the W and Z bosons. His detailed calculations of the properties of these particles provided firm and reliable theoretical predictions, which allowed for precision tests of the underlying theory, in particular the QCD-improved parton model, at the high-energy colliders Tevatron at Fermilab and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. His colleagues say his contributions remain important ingredients to the mathematical toolbox used in the ongoing search for signals of new physics beyond the Standard Model at high-energy colliders. Gonsalves joined the UB physics faculty in 1980 and served as department chair from 1996 to 2004. He received a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1994.
