“The Royals of Sir Cedric” by Steve Treder of The Hardball Times December 21, 2004 At its inception, the most successful expansion franchise in pre-free agency baseball history didn’t impress many observers. The Kansas City Royals devoted most of their expansion draft picks to unproven young players, in distinct contrast to the approach taken by their companion A.L. expansion team, the Seattle Pilots. (Burchfield) Daily Transactions 1 Most likely Detroit Tiger to be traded? Probably J.D. Martinez October 20, 2016 By Anthony Fenech/ Detroit Free Press The Detroit Tigers aren’t in a position to spend more money. General manager Al Avila said as much on Tuesday afternoon, saying with certainty the team would not be a big player in the free agent market. Avila wants the team to get younger. He wants more financial flexibility. And this off-season, he will approach the trade market with a number of high-priced, uber-productive chips, none more likely to get moved – if a move is made – than rightfielder J.D. Martinez. Martinez is scheduled to hit free agency after the 2017 season. He is due $11.75 million. “I don’t foresee any talks of a long-term contract at this point,” Avila said. “In saying that, we’re going to keep an open mind in what possibilities come across this winter, this coming summer. I’m not going to rule out that we wouldn’t consider a long-term deal, but sitting here today, we’re not thinking that way right now.

Several were injured, and others have been getting needed development time in Triple-A. That's finally starting to change. With his "Super Two" status no longer a concern, pitching prospect Cody Reed was called up Saturday. Infielder Jose Peraza is back in the big leagues for the second time. Starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani has put an oblique injury behind him. Pitchers Michael Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias could be ready in the near future. "It's exciting because this is what we've all talked about," Price said. "We've anticipated it would happen a little bit sooner. We didn't anticipate the health issues, and didn't think we'd come out of Spring Training with all the issues and injuries. I did anticipate we'd get to the point where these young guys would impact our ballclub, and begin to learn how to play at this level and find their way to success." More help could be coming. Pitcher Robert Stephenson, who already made two spot starts in the big leagues, is performing well at Triple-A Louisville with a 3.29 ERA in 11 starts.
