5 Basic Knowledge of Acupuncture

The Japanese traditional acupuncture focuses on diagnoses by feeling one’s pulse. The placement of needles depends on the feelings of different kind of pulse patterns. Acupuncturists pick appropriate acupuncture points to balance the patient’s body and spirit.

Today, however, there is an increased number of acupuncturists who place needles on the point of pain, which is 6 not a traditional way of acupuncture.

Ways to place a needle:

1. Open a package, and detach the needle from the tube. 2. Clean the surface of the skin with an alcohol swab. 3. Place a needle in a tube, hold them so that the needle does not dislodge from the tube, and then point them on the spot where you want to place the needle. Hold the tube with your thumb and index finger of your other hand while stabilizing your hand on the patient. 4. Using the other side of your hand, tap the needle several times to place it on the patient’s skin. 5. Remove the tube, then adjust the depth and angle of the needle. 7 Detach the needle from the tube.

8 Hold the tube with your thumb and index finger to stabilize at the point.

9 Tap the needle to insert beneath the skin.

10 Remove the tube and stabilize the inserting point.

11 Insert the needle.

16 17 Treatment

Improve the energy flow by placing a needle or manipulating at the point where the energy flow is blocked/the worst.

1. Normally, use only one needle. 2. No need to apply the knowledge of anatomy. 3. To improve the outcome of the treatment, OMT (osteopathic manipulative treatments) can be used while a needle is placed. 4. Use manipulation on points needing to be treated cautiously. 5. The needle placement of the acupuncture point is at the point where the energy flow is blocked or diminished. 6. Insert a needle until it hits the energy flow.

18 Example of sensations when a needle reached to the energy flow

• Similar feelings of a water flow.

• Tissues around the needle become relaxed.

19 Acupuncture for Osteopaths Utilizing Energy Circulation Within the Body

has an energy flows that is separate from blood circulation, lymph circulation, and respiration. • When the energy flows normally then accordingly the tissues function normally and one can maintain his/her original healthy state. • Upward Energy; Flows on the posterior of the body. Energizes the tissues.

• Downward Energy; Flows on the anterior of the 20 body. Regulates the tissues.

Acupuncture for Osteopaths Utilizing Energy Circulation Within the Body

Every human being has more or less has a blockage in his/her energy flow which leads to various malconditions ranging from sickness or pains to diseases or disorders. There is no regularity in the energy flow that determines a certain blockage causes a specific disorder in a specific body part. We always need to treat the body as a whole; the idea which accords with that of osteopathy. 21 Upward Energy Starts at the junction of calcaneus, talus, cuboid, and navicular on the sole of foot.

22 Upward Energy

Travels in a few cm below the skin, forms 3 main flows at the posterior buttock.

23 Upward Energy

Continues traveling on the back, then divides into a flow toward to an arm and neck at the superior angle of scapula. A flow on an arm divides into individual digit at the wrist.

24 Upward Energy The flow in the middle travels through neck toward to the top of head. 2 flows on each side travel through the neck, then divide into a flow toward to the eye socket and to the lower jaw at posterior ear (at mastoid).

25 Turning Point Starts when flows from the top and side of head come around anteriorly. The flow in the middle passes the top of head, then becomes downward energy running anteriorly. The flows from the side of head pass through the eye socket, then merge with the downward energy flow from lower jaw. 26

Downward Energy 3 flows through the face run the neck anteriorly. The flows from each finger meet at wrist anteriorly, run through the arm, then merge at the clavicle with the flow running in the side of neck, forming 3 main flows anteriorly. 27 Downward Energy The middle flow through the torso runs to the pubic , then turn over to posteriorly. It travels upwards for a little while along coccyx and sacrum, then appears anteriorly again. It merges at groin with flows running the side,

then continue traveling 28 through lower extremity anteriorly. Downward Energy

It divides into 5 flows at the ankle anteriorly toward to each toe. These flows turn over to sole of the foot, then become upward energy flows.
