SS- We purchased him for a client at the Racing In Dubai Sale and he was always a very impressive and imposing looking horse but he has strengthened and grown again in the year that we have had him.

SW - Could you tell us a bit more about his personality? SS- For such a big, strong horse he is a true professional. Like any racehorse, he likes to go to the races and enjoys the atmosphere of the crowds. The amazing part of having him in training is that his work rider Abdul Sattar, is a very fragile, small looking person with great hands who goes to prove that strength doesn't always work on these powerful athletes.

SW- It's widely known, how you travelled the world and studied horses under many greats including Monty Roberts. What are your fondest memories of that time? What are your fondest memories of the time here in Dubai? And what is the kind of banter, we could expect to find at your dinner table these days? Please tell us a bit more about your family. SS- I've been very fortunate in my life to have travelled the world and met, worked and been involved with some of the finest people in my business. Monty Roberts who taught me horsemanship, is my guru. Till this day we are still in touch. Any questions I may have about a horse I'm confused about, all I have to do is call and discuss it with him. I try to visit and spend time with him once a year. After I finished my Equine Science studies in California, I was fortunate enough to work with Taylor Made farms in Lexington, Kentucky. I consider the Taylor family one of the top business families in the racing and breeding profession. I owe a lot to them for teaching me the business side of my profession. Due to these top two organisations (Monty Roberts and Taylor Made farms) I was lucky enough to be offered the job by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum to take over Zabeel Stables where I have now resided for the last 27 years.

The charming thing about Dubai is that there is not just one fondest memory. If you ask me, in my business the memories are amazing. The introduction of International racing, the Dubai World Cup, the amazing construction of Meydan Racecourse. Along with this, we horsemen based here in Dubai get to see the world's top racehorses coming here to compete with the horses that we are involved with.

she raced her first race in 2017 well, the rest were lost without even trying. Her breeding and form ofcourse suggests she has the class to win the race with ease. But whether she has the determination to win, remains to be seen. Owned by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, the South African bred filly was recently moved out of South African trainer Sam Tarry's yard and travelled to join South Africa's top trainer Mike de Kock's Dubai string. Tarry has said in a previous interview, “The filly is very unlucky not to be a Grade 1 winner because she's been beaten by the best fillies around”.

5 year old mare, Promising Run is certainly looking promising. She recently came third in Fleur De Lys Fillies' Stakes behind Muffri'Ha and Zest. She beat Light The Lights on her first start here last year in the Al Rashidiya. This mare is one to watch seriously this season, it just may be here time to make good on her promises.

Opal Tiara, however may not let her do so! The Mike Channon trained mare, placed a cool fourth behind in the recently upgraded Gr.3 Stakes. She has the form and the energy to take on the spirited Promising Run.

Furia Cruzada, a Chilean bred, five-year-old, seven-time Veteran Trainer Charpy's international winner, won the Gr.2 Al Maktoum Challenge R2 in her UAE bow in 2017 before finishing third in Gr. 1 Al Maktoum Challenge R3 and 13th in the Dubai World Cup (G1) after a Amazon Princess is Back In Dubai tough trip. Veteran trainer Erwan Charpy is delighted to have her back in Dubai after a hard season in Europe. “She's coming along very good,” Charpy said. “She actually came in a little worse (light after traveling) than last year, but is a little ahead of schedule this year with how quickly she's getting back into shape. She's progressing well and at the moment we are sticking to the same plan of running in (Al Maktoum Challenge) R2. She's proven here and we look forward to it. I'm quite happy with how she's doing and so is (jockey) Antonio (Fresu).”

They considered the Cape Verdi as a good race in order to settle the feisty mare for the Dubai season. But eventually, it was decided that she would defend her title in the Gr.2 Al Maktoum Challenge.

Charpy believes that although she is a fantastic filly, she is can be highly strung. So his tactic this year is to keep it simple and not to over plan.

The Frenchman, who has spent over two decades in the UAE, had his first runner in the US$10 million Dubai World Cup 2017. Charpy was 'not that happy' to be drawn from gate 8, at the time. The “puzzling” rain on the day and Furia Cruzada's collision with Arrogate at the start with resulted in a disappointing outcome for the connections and trainer Charpy. Recalling the day, “It was a difficult time.” He says. “She is almost ready to run”. Going forward, he plans to give the Amazon princess some leeway to set the course to her back to success in the Dubai World Cup Carnival.

According to him, his greatest racing moment, was the night his charge won the Gr. 2 Maktoum Challenge R2. “When she won, nobody was paying her any attention. She took everyone by surprise” Says Charpy, reminiscing of Furia Cruzada's first race at Meydan. The South American community was very ecstatic at the win. They showered him with congratulatory messages for a long time, thereafter.

“She is a very nice looking horse, extravagant mover and very tough” says Charpy of his charge. Her jockey Antonio Fresu considers her to be his girlfriend. Fresu can't wait to defend their title in the upcoming Maktoum Challenge R2.

As a parting shot, when asked who he expects to see in the Dubai World Cup field of runners this year, he said, “I honestly do not have a clue. Dubai World Cup deserves to have the nicest horses from every part of the world.”

SW wishes Furia Cruzada the all best in her training for the Al Maktoum Challenge R2.
