Australia’s best junior swimmers head to Canberra for state of origin

Swimming Australia Published: Sep 16, 2011 12:30:22 PM Updated: Sep 16, 2011 02:15:55 PM

Dual Junior World Championship gold medallist Cameron McEvoy will headline a list of more than 200 of Australia’s best young swimmers competing at the 2011 State Teams Short Course event at the AIS in Canberra this weekend.

Teams representing Queensland, NSW, Victoria, West Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania, aged 13 to 17, will take part in the third ever State Teams Short Course event to be held over four sessions starting on Saturday 17 September from 5.00pm at the AIS.

McEvoy, who recently won gold in the 50 and 100m freestyle at the Junior World Championships in Lima will headline a strong Queensland team which also includes relay bronze medallist from Lima Taylor McKeown .

The NSW team will be highlighted by Commonwealth Youth Games 5-time gold medallist Ami Matsuo from the Carlile Swim Club in Sydney as well Canberra local and multiple Australian Age championship gold medallist Hugo Morris from the Woden Swim Club.

Swimming Australia’s National Youth Coach Vince Raleigh , who has also just returned from the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man, says competing in a team environment and racing against the best in Australia for their age is an important part of the development of the youth program.

“The main thing is getting athletes prepared to race at this time of the year, which really mirrors some of the international meets and also gives them something to focus on in terms of their fitness and preparation,” said Raleigh.

“Outside of the Australian Age Championships, the best young swimmers in Australia don’t often get to race against each other and to do so in a team environment gives states the chance to work together and coaches the opportunity to develop professionally as well.”

“This event has received fantastic support from all the states over the last three years and while it’s still only young on the Australian swimming calendar, we are already seeing benefits as athletes progress through from State Teams into senior and open teams and competition.”

Looking to defend their State Teams crown from 2010 and 2009, Queensland Head Coach Matt Brown, who also coaches Beijing Olympic gold medallist Emily Seebohm , says the four session meet is a great opportunity for these young swimmers to race competitively.

“We’ve been very fortunate over the years to have a lot of athletes involved in the Trans Tasman series which really toughens them up for when they then progress to Mare Nostrum and meets like the Santa Clara, and these four sessions are just as tough with some quality racing across the board,” said Brown. “Over the last couple of years we’ve seen the likes of Kenneth To and Te Haumi Maxwell progress through this meet and the gap between the states is certainly getting smaller, with a number of individuals putting their hand up from NSW, Victoria and WA.”

“From a Queensland perspective we have always treated this competition like a mini national team, and have worked hard to ensure everyone is capable of performing well and bringing the best out of themselves at the meet.”

The meet will start with a series of 400m freestyle races on the opening night followed by 50m skins sprint events with athletes competing across four age categories 13/14 and 15/16 women and 14/15 and 16/17 men.

Results : Queensland has won their third State Teams title in as many years at the AIS today with Cameron McEvoy and Leah Neale collecting the crown on 2060 points ahead of NSW (1900), Victoria (1649), West Australia (1264), South Australia (692), Tasmania (240) and the Northern Territory on 64 points.
