  • 2018/19 Challenge Cup Pool Draw
2018/19 Challenge Cup Pool Draw The Pool Draw for the 2018/19 Challenge Cup will take place in Lausanne, Switzerland on Wednesday, 20 June at 2.00pm (UK and Irish time) before the draw for the Champions Cup. The key principles and key steps integral to the Draw are explained below. Key principles • The 20 clubs which have qualified on merit from the TOP 14, Gallagher Premiership Rugby, the Guinness PRO14, the PRO D2, the Greene King IPA Championship and from the Continental Shield will compete in the 2018/19 Challenge Cup in five pools of four. • The clubs are divided into four tiers based on the qualification positions from their respective leagues, and on the Continental Shield. A draw will be carried out in advance of the pool draw proper to complete the tiers. • Each of the five pools will include one club from each of the four tiers. • Each pool will have at least one club from the TOP 14, the Premiership and the PRO14. • There will be no more than two clubs from the same league in a pool. • No pool will contain two PRO14 clubs from the same country. • Clubs from the same league will be kept apart until the Tier 4 allocation. • A club from the Continental Shield cannot be drawn into a pool which contains two TOP 14 clubs or two Premiership clubs. Challenge Cup qualification For the purposes of creating the tiers, the clubs are ranked based on their finishing positions in the TOP 14, Premiership, PRO14, PRO D2 and Championship leagues, or on qualification from the Continental Shield.

  • The Earl of Thomond's 1615 Survey of Ibrickan, Co
McInerney Thomond 15/1/14 10:52 AM Page 173 North Munster Antiquarian Journal vol. 53, 2013 173 The Earl of Thomond’s 1615 Survey of Ibrickan, Co. Clare LUKE McINERNEY A transcription and discussion of an early seventeenth century survey of a Co. Clare barony. The chief value of the document is that it represents the earliest rent-roll detailing the Earl of Thomond’s estate in Co. Clare and merits study not least because it is one of the most comprehensive surveys of its type for early seventeenth century Co. Clare. Furthermore, it may be used to ascertain the landholding matrix of Ibrickan and to identify the chief tenants. Presented here is a survey undertaken of the barony of Ibrickan in Co. Clare in 1615.1 The survey covered the entire 63 quarters of the barony. It is lodged at Petworth House archive among the collection of Thomond Papers there.2 At present, our understanding of the changes in landholding for Ibrickan is hindered by the fact that the returns in the 1641 Books of Survey and Distribution3 show that by that time proprietorship of the barony was exclusively in the hands of the Earl of Thomond and few under-tenants are recorded. Having a full list of the chief tenants which dates from the second decade of the seven- teenth century augments our understanding of the changes wrought to landholding, inheritance and social relations in Gaelic regions at a critical juncture in Irish history following the battle of Kinsale. This 1615 survey of part of the extensive estate of the Earl of Thomond serves to focus our gaze at a lower echelon of Gaelic society.

  • Annual Report
Introduction GAA Games Development 2014 Annual Report for the Irish Sports Council GAA Games Development 2014 A Annual Report for the Irish Sports Council @GAAlearning GAALearning www.learning.gaa.ie Foreword Foreword At a Forum held in Croke Park in June 2014 over 100 young people aged 15 – 19 were asked to define in one word what the GAA means to them. In their words the GAA is synonymous with ‘sport’, ‘parish’, ‘club’, ‘family’, ‘pride’ ‘passion’, ‘cultúr’, ‘changing’, ‘enjoyment’, ‘fun’, ‘cairdeas’. Above all these young people associated the GAA with the word ‘community’. At its most fundamental level GAA Games Development – through the synthesis of people, projects and policies – provides individuals across Ireland and internationally with the opportunity to connect with, participate in and contribute as part of a community. The nature and needs of this unique community is ever-changing and continuously evolving, however, year upon year GAA Games Development adapts accordingly to ensure the continued roll out of the Grassroots to National Programme and the implementation of projects to deliver games opportunities, skill development and learning initiatives. As recognised by Pierre Mairesse, Director General for Education and Culture in the European Commission, these serve to ‘go beyond the traditional divides between sports, youth work, citizenship and education’. i Annual Report for the Irish Sports Council. GAA Games Development 2014 2014 has been no exception to this and has witnessed some important milestones including: 89,000 participants at Cúl Camps, the introduction of revised Féile competitions that saw the number of players participating in these tournaments increase by 4,000, as well as the first ever National Go Games Week - an event that might have seemed unlikely less than a decade ago.

We must maintain an environment that is conducive to doing business – and adequate commercial energy capacity is central to that. IDA Ireland welcomes EirGrid’s stated aim of transitioning the electricity sector to low-carbon, renewable energy. The North Connacht project is an important part of that strategy, providing the necessary electricity infrastructure required by industry across North Connacht through renewable energy means, ensuring security of supply for customers and businesses across Mayo, Sligo and Roscommon. • The Phylogenealogy of R-L21: Four and a Half Millennia of Expansion and Redistribution
The phylogenealogy of R-L21: four and a half millennia of expansion and redistribution Joe Flood* * Dr Flood is a mathematician, economist and data analyst. He was a Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO and has been a Fellow at a number of universities including Macquarie University, University of Canberra, Flinders University, University of Glasgow, University of Uppsala and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He was a foundation Associate Director of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute. He has been administrator of the Cornwall Y-DNA Geographic Project and several surname projects at FTDNA since 2007. He would like to give credit to the many ‘citizen scientists’ who made this paper possible by constructing the detailed R1b haplotree over the past few years, especially Alex Williamson. 1 ABSTRACT: Phylogenealogy is the study of lines of descent of groups of men using the procedures of genetic genealogy, which include genetics, surname studies, history and social analysis. This paper uses spatial and temporal variation in the subclade distribution of the dominant Irish/British haplogroup R1b-L21 to describe population changes in Britain and Ireland over a period of 4500 years from the early Bronze Age until the present. The main focus is on the initial spread of L21-bearing populations from south-west Britain as part of the Beaker Atlantic culture, and on a major redistribution of the haplogroup that took place in Ireland and Scotland from about 100 BC. The distributional evidence for a British origin for L21 around 2500 BC is compelling. Most likely the mutation originated in the large Beaker colony in south-west Britain, where many old lineages still survive.

Impact on Walking in the Blackstairs Mountains 3 3. Landscape and Visual Impact 7 4. Planning Context 9 5. Conclusions 11 6. About Mountaineering Ireland 11 References 12 2 1. Introduction and Context As the representative body for hillwalkers and climbers on the island of Ireland, Mountaineering Ireland has a particular concern for ensuring the sustainable use of Ireland’s upland areas. Mountaineering Ireland therefore represents a community of interest in this application, drawn from Co. Carlow, the south east, and across the island of Ireland. The Blackstairs Mountains are a hugely significant element landscape of the south-east, this chain of rounded granite mountains rises between the beautiful Barrow valley and the lowlands of Wexford, marking the boundary between counties Carlow and Wexford and forming a landscape cherished for its scenic qualities. The proposal is for a development comprising seven wind turbines with an overall height of up to 178m, mainly within Coillte forestry on Kilbrannish Hill, immediately north of the Corrabut Gap. The site is 3km north east of the well-known Nine Stones viewing point and less than 5km from the summit of Mount Leinster, the highest point in both Co. Carlow and Co. Wexford. The applicant is Coillte CGA. Commercial windfarms on this scale should be described as wind factories. Mountaineering Ireland is strongly of the view that the proposed development would be unacceptably damaging to the visual amenity and landscape character of this area.
