The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. An origin story set in 1981, the film follows Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham, and Marc Maron appear in supporting roles. Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, and Joint Effort in association with Bron Creative and Village Roadshow Pictures, and distributed by Warner Bros. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, who was initially attached to the project as a producer. The graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) was the basis for the premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. Theatrical release poster Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City, and Newark, from September to December 2018. It is the first live-action Directed by Todd Phillips theatrical Batman film to receive an R-rating from the Motion Picture Produced by Todd Phillips Association of America, due to its violent and disturbing content. -

His Brothers’ Keeper Lawyer Gregory Stanton refuses to let the world ignore the genocide of two million Kampucheans. This is the story of their tragedy and his dedication. By Michael Matza There is a compelling sense of mission about 35-year-old Gregory Howard Stanton, a 1982 graduate of Yale Law School. This past April, Stanton launched a one- man effort he calls the Kampuchean Genocide Project, through which he hopes to raise $300,000 to send researchers and scientists to Southeast Asia to gather evidence that would document—precisely and for posterity—the crimes of the Pol Pot government in Democratic Kampuchea (Cambodia) from April 1975 through the end of 1978. Although it was thrown out of power by a Vietnamese-backed invasion in 1979, the government that was named for Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot still represents Kampuchea as part of a united front in the United Nations. That it does so belies a past that survivors of Khmer Rouge brutalities remember with dread. In the three and a half years that it was in power, the Pol Pot regime is said to have intentionally murdered at least one million Kampucheans and to have imposed conditions of slave labor, starvation, and forced evacuations that resulted in the deaths of more than one million others. In a country of approximately eight million people, one quarter of the population was systematically exterminated through a maniacal program that seemed like the Final Solution writ small. Seattle, con il suo grigiore morale e la sua fitta trama di pioggia, accompagna un'indagine di sofferto coinvolgimento emotivo per il pubblico e per i due detective: lei taciturna e introversa, “incapsulata” nei suoi sgraziati maglioni di lana grossa; lui, dal fascino tenebroso, con un passato di marginalità sociale e un presente tutt’altro che rassicurante. Il tempo dell'indagine lento e prolungato di The Killing sa avvincere e crescere in partecipazione ed angoscia. Linden e Holder (sempre i cognomi nella narrazione!) faticheranno a dipanare il caso e i propri rapporti interpersonali, ma l'alchimia tra una regia impeccabile e un calibrato intreccio sa tenere sempre alta la tensione; fino alla sconvolgente soluzione del giallo, in cui alla beffa del destino, che esalta il cinismo dei singoli e scardina ogni acquiescenza familiare, può far da contraltare solo la toccante compassione per la tragica fine di Rosie. -

1 Murder, Mugs, Molls, Marriage: The Broken Ideals of Love and Family in Film Noir Noir is a conversation rather than a single genre or style, though it does have a history, a complex of overlapping styles and typical plots, and more central directors and films. It is also a conversation about its more common philosophies, socio-economic and sexual concerns, and more expansively its social imaginaries. MacIntyre's three rival versions suggest the different ways noir can be studied. Tradition's approach explains better the failure of the other two, as will as their more limited successes. Something like the Thomist understanding of people pursuing perceived (but faulty) goods better explains the neo- Marxist (or other power/conflict) model and the self-construction model. Each is dependent upon the materials of an earlier tradition to advance its claims/interpretations. [Styles-studio versus on location; expressionist versus classical three-point lighting; low-key versus high lighting; whites/blacks versus grays; depth versus flat; theatrical versus pseudo-documentary; variety of felt threat levels—investigative; detective, procedural, etc.; basic trust in ability to restore safety and order versus various pictures of unopposable corruption to a more systemic nihilism; melodramatic vs. colder, more distant; dialogue—more or less wordy, more or less contrived, more or less realistic; musical score—how much it guides and dictates emotions; presence or absence of humor, sentiment, romance, healthy family life; narrator, narratival flashback; motives for criminality and violence-- socio- economic (expressed by criminal with or without irony), moral corruption (greed, desire for power), psychological pathology; cinematography—classical vs. -

The principal movers and shakers of the law work from dawn to dusk, although they often have agents who work at night. 2 Their business is about the outer world and how we treat each other during the day. Sometimes the law worries about our inner life when determining whether a contract was made5 or what might have prompted a murder,4 but usually the emphasis in the law is on our external conduct and how we wheel and deal with each other. As veterans they carry the shame and guilt of what they have done for the rest of their lives. This is a critical issue for veterans and their supporters, as Spiritual Injuries (SI) can be a significant cause of distress and discomfort and may KEYWORDS: become a major contributor to mental health issues and have negative effects on their spirit; wound; faith; Australian overall well-being. In order to help practitioners work with veterans, this paper identifies Defence Force; belief; killing; the spiritual implications for veterans who kill in war. Sadly, it will be necessary to develop sin; atonement; guilt; shame; some understanding of the nature of killing in war and the particular circumstances of redemption those that kill. Initially, there is be a brief literature review of some of the key material published on this topic. The overall aim is to identify the key features of killing in war.
