THE ART SCENE STORE ON CAMPUS 3pm to 6.30pm Sunday 8am to 6.30pm Mon - Thurs 8am to 2.00pm Friday THE ART SCENE PROFILE

The Art Scene was established in 1978 when its founder Mr Henry Malouf (a dedicated hobby artist) decided he could no longer remain retired at the early age of 50. With the help of his wife Evelyn and 4 children Paul, Julie, Kim and Greg who one by one gave up their careers to work in the business, they now have a thriving custom picture framing and art materials business.

Having been on the opposite end of the counter for some years he knew what he wanted as an artist, namely professional help in selecting the right picture frame to enhance and compliment his artwork and of course as is the case for most “struggling artists”, help in keeping the costs down. Through word of mouth a substantial portion of the professional and semi professional artists in New South Wales heard of this quality picture framer which not only could offer a fresh look to the way pictures were framed but halved framing costs which were a substantial portion of the cost of a painting.

Another innovation by Henry was to make The Art Scene a one stop shop for artists and in 1980 he introduced a full range of artist materials into the store (still in its present site today but expanding each year down the street) so that all the artists shopping needs from frames, paints, brushes and canvases could be done at the one time and in the one place. The Art Scene has substantially grown its mail order business and now sells wide with significant orders being exported to countries such as England, USA and Asia, as well as having three stores in NSW.

Have fun with some experimental ways that get excited about your future artworks. The week will be filled with fun and engaging art exercises guaranteed to get those creative ideas happening. You are welcome to bring artworks for a critique as well. Get ready to develop your own expressionism! Kristine Ballard is a Sydney based artist whose work focuses on vibrant colour. She is a seasoned art educator having run the Northshore School of Art for 12 years, conducted corporate art events and functions and been the Arts Presenter on EdTV. She runs an annual Art Retreat in Fiji and facilitates many Art Workshops. She specialises in one-to-one art tuition where she can fast track student development and growth. WORKSHOPS 8. Patrick Carroll COURTING THE MUSE AND MAKING A PAINTING MEDIUM: ACRYLIC BEGINNER - ADVANCED Patrick Carroll subscribes to the philosophy that all great art is essentially an abstraction not an imitation. It is said that subjects find painters, painters do not find their subjects. It has also been said that the task of the painter is to show the viewer the ordinary in an extraordinary fashion. James Joyce once wrote that the ‘joy of the individual is to grow into the person that they were always meant to be.’ So the painter is then challenged to cause the painting to develop and grow. This is done with the creative skill and true input from the heart, mind and soul of the artist - No FORMULAE AND NO SHORTCUTS. You only require a passionate heart, an open mind and a spiritually imbued soul together with some paints, paper and brushes. Confused? Let’s start painting..

“Patrick Carroll is an artist who does not shrink from subjects which present great complexity. In fact the more difficult the image the more energised in his approach and resolution. From the cluttered urban landscape of red roofs and narrow streets to the tangle of the Australian scrub he is able to distill its essence and grandeur and reflect it through confident brushstrokes and dramatic colours.” As quoted by Michael Pursche

WORKSHOPS 9. Catherine Harry PAINT EARTH, SEAS & SKIES WITH ENERGY & DYNAMISM MEDIUM: ACRYLIC & MIXED MEDIA BEGINNER - ADVANCED The first marks you make are the cleanest and surest simply because they are made without hesitation. Create imagery with a free and dynamic approach. Explore acrylics to it’s full potential. Learn how to make paintings from layered colour, using a variety of brushes to achieve interesting brushstrokes. Explore various ways in which you can build a convincing sense of space in your paintings using contrast and the sky. Explore the use of textured surfaces to create poetic paintings. Class demonstrations will be given as well as handout notes and colour photographs. Students are encouraged to bring their own photographs or drawings to create individual works. Catherine is a Sydney (FRAS) based artist who has been exhibiting professionally for 25 years in commercial galleries and art shows. She has won numerous awards and her works have been used in art publications and purchased by government organisations. Catherine studied at the National Art School in Sydney and later extended her studies at UTS obtaining a Teaching Degree. Part of her development in the visual arts culture has been to study at the Julian Ashton Art School, as well as the study of traditional and ethnic art practices in Europe, U.S.A. and South East Asia. She is a Fellow of the Royal Art Society and council member. Although much of Catherine’s formal study has exclusively concentrated on oils, her continually developing personal style in the visual arts has embraced the fluent and immediate effects of water based media. Her paintings are drawn from the visual experience of life on a sensory and emotional level. She has a solid foundation in plein air painting and attends regular life drawing groups. Catherine describes her own artistic style as oscillating between figurative and abstraction and much of her work subscribes to this notion. In the moment when colour, shapes and marks begin to interact, the painting takes on a life of its own reflecting the artist’s observations, experiences and imagination. WORKSHOPS 10. Students will paint, brush in hand, from the first moment to the last. I believe the way to learn is to run flat out. There will be stumbles and from time to time. You may fall over, but you pick yourself up and go again, wiser for the experi- ence. That is how to tackle this medium. It needs boldness and a preparedness to make mistakes – that is how we learn. There will be challenges but along the way we will have fun, another essential ingredient for learning. John has been a professional artist since 1971. Trained as a perspective artist he has over the years developed his interest in watercol- our as a medium for expressive painting particularly well adapted for plein-air work. He believes in the fundamental importance of good drawing as well as knowing the rules of figurative painting before you go out and deliberately break them. Grounded in sound technical knowledge, John encourages his students to look for the mood and atmosphere in a picture rather than recording scenes with no emotion. An experienced teacher and demonstrator. The watercolour tutor at The Royal Art Society, watercolour tutor at Mitchell School of Arts, Bathurst, Sturt Summer School, Mittagong, Paradise Courses, Fiji, and previously drawing tutor in the architectural faculties of University of Newcastle, University of New South Wales and Interior Design School, Sydney College of the Arts. He is the author of three books, a regular exhibitor and award winner. A collection of his architec- tural drawings is held in the State Library of NSW. He is represented by the Maunsell Wickes at Barry Stern Gallery in Paddington. Paul Margocsy THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS MEDIUM: WATER BASED MEDIA INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED In this workshop I will endeavour to show you a totally new approach and technique to painting the wonders of wildlife. With the use of water based mediums I will show you how to not only paint feathers and fur but to paint attitude, character and a photo realistic approach to your subject. This will enable you to position your subject and paint the surrounding habitat and give it a photo realistic look. Your work will eventually resemble what you see when you look through a camera lens and you will achieve depth of field and a clarity of subject. Composition is the main attribute to any painting and I will give you guidelines how to achieve this. It’s a fun course and in the five days you will be amazed at what you will produce with this new process. This course is not daunting and from numerous workshops the students have been thrilled and uplifted with this new approach to wildlife art. The backgrounds and the props of wildlife art are important when you are painting realism and the airbrush technique used in the backgrounds will enhance your work. This course is enthralling, exciting and totally fulfilling……I will show you that painting nature can be fun. Paul was born in August in 1945 in Melbourne. As a child he loved to draw but had no formal art training. After much research into ornithology and self-taught efforts he eventually won first prize in the ildlifeW Art Society of Australasia. Paul was included in a book launch in 1990 featuring 70 of the best living traditional artists in Australia. Four years later he had his first book published on his art. Why are you frightened? Just get stuck in. It is only paper and paint and water. Just do it! In this workshop we will focus on bringing you out of your comfort-zone and into the world of loose, vibrant, fresh and free-flowing watercolours. Lose the rigidity that has been plaguing your work. A fresh approach means that your watercolours will come to life. Your inhibitions gone and your own artistic flair will come to the fore. Applying the paint with purpose, while ensuring we take care of the essentials such and composition and tone, you will leave this workshop with a new-found confidence and attitude towards this fantastic medium. Let’s create art, NOT decoration.

Tony White is a Watercolour Artist from Newcastle, Australia. He has established a great following with collectors and students alike. His work has been sold as far afield as Germany and the U.K. His social media following is gaining momentum and with over 10,000 Facebook followers, he is hitting his stride around the world. His style is traditional impressionistic landscape with a strong emphasis on light and atmosphere. “I am inspired by light. Even in the most innocuous of scenes, if the light is dramatic and the mood is misty or sharp or rainy, then I’m in! I have a natural aversion to bright colours. I believe a painting should move you emotionally and if you have to explain it, then it isn’t doing its job”.
