And one of his descendants is the famous Navigator of Ming Dynasty, Zheng He, who led the largest armada in the world of 15th century. The origin of Sayyid Ajjal's family remains unclear although many studies have been done on this topic of Muslim history. In this paper, we studied the Y chromosomes of his present descendants, and found they all have haplogroup L1a-M76, proving a southern Persian origin. Keywords Y chromosome, Sayyid Ajjal, Zheng He 2 Most people now inherit surnames from their fathers; and similarly, most men also inherit the Y chromosomes from their fathers. Therefore, men sharing the same surname are expected to have similar Y chromosomes. When combined with surnames and genealogies, Y chromosome can be used to trace the ancestry of eminent persons in history by studying their present descendants. Successful cases include the inference of Y chromosome haplotype of Emperor CAO Cao1, 2. Here, we continue to use this method to provide clues about the genetic ancestry of Sayyid Ajjal Shams al-Din Omar and the eminent navigator Zheng He. Sayyid Ajjal Shams al-Din Omar is a very famous person in East Asia and the Muslim world. Sayyid Ajjal was a Muslim Khwarezmian in Bukhara before his family surrendered to Genghis Khan. Then, he was appointed as the first provincial governor of Yunnan in history by Yuan Dynasty. Sayyid Ajjal also made great contributions to the widespread presence of Islam in China3. Many Muslims across China have taken Sayyid Ajjal as their ancestor, especially the famous explorer and diplomat Zheng He in Ming Dynasty and nowadays the Muslims with surname Na in Yunnan province4. Na people are suggested by historical records and their genealogies to be the descendants of Nasr al-Din, the first son of Sayyid Ajjal. Zheng He whose original surname was Ma has also been suggested to be the descendant of Nasr al-Din. However, the ancestry of Sayyid Ajjal is still in debate. He was born in Bukhara (nowadays in Uzbekistan)3; however, his ancestors were suggested to have moved around West Asia, North Africa, Europe, and Persia before their final settlement in Central Asia5. Some other genealogies even pointed to that the ancestors of Sayyid Ajjal had already arrived in China in the Song Dynasty6. Therefore, whether Sayyid Ajjal has a Persian ancestry or not is yet to be validated. Jianbo Na7 has tried to discuss this issue in his Master degree thesis. He collected 40 male samples with surname Na from Datong County, Yunnan province and typed 9 Y chromosomal short tandem repeats (STRs). He found that 35 individuals shared the same haplotype (DYS19, 14; DYS389I, 12; DYS389b, 16; DYS390, 22; DYS391, 11; DYS392, 14; DYS393, 11) and two individuals only had one step mutation compared with the above haplotype. However, he didn’t type the Y chromosomal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and couldn’t give a deterministic conclusion about the ancestry of Sayyid Ajjal. Here, we recollected male samples with surname Na and Ma according to the genealogies of Sayyid Ajjal and Zheng He from Datong and Kunming, Yunnan province. We typed Y chromosome SNPs as listed in the latest Y-chromosome phylogenetic tree8, 9 and 17 Y-Filer STRs. One of the three Na samples shared the same haplotype as mentioned above (DYS19, 14; DYS389I, 12; DYS389b, 16; DYS390, 22; DYS391, 11; DYS392, 14; DYS393, 11; DYS437, 15; DYS438, 11; DYS439, 12; DYS448, 19; DYS456, 17; DYS458, 16; DYS635, 24; H4, 12; DYS385a, 13; DYS385b, 17) and the Ma sample also shared the similar haplotype with only one step mutation at DYS19 for the 17 Y-STRs. The haplogroup of Na and Ma samples were assigned as L1a-M76. Haplogroup L1a-M76 is found mainly in Eastern Iran, Southern Pakistan, and India. A low frequency of L1a-M76 has also been detected in Saudi Arabia, Nepal, and Central Asia (Fig. 1a) 10-14. To discern the detailed relationships among the Na and Ma people and other related populations, we constructed a median-joining network based on Y-STR haplotypes within the L-M11 haplogroup (Fig.1b). Many Dravidian (southern India) and Malaysian Indian samples 3 together with four Pakistan (three Balochi and one Makrani), four Afghanistan (one Bagram, one Arab, one Balush, and one Uzbek) samples, and one Na individual formed the root clade of haplogroup L1a-M76. Most of Na samples had one step mutation with the root haplotype and they also clustered a middle size clade with few Malaysian Indian samples. The nearly exclusive clade of Na samples indicates the severe founder effect and the subsequent clan expansion. The Na and Ma Muslims with the Y chromosome haplogroup L1a-M76 might trace their origin to western South Asia, most of where were occupied by Persia for a long time during the period of their ancient ancestors. The strict Islamic genealogies also link the Na and Ma Muslims to Sayyid Ajjal and Zheng He hundreds of years ago. Thus, the suggested Persian ancestry for Sayyid Ajjal and Zheng He is supported by genetic evidence. Figure 1. (a). Frequency distribution of haplogroup L1a-M76. The Germanic languages are a branch of the Indo-European language family and include among their major contemporary representatives English, German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Icelandic. Historically, the search for Germanic origins has sought to determine where the Germanic languages evolved, and why the Germanic languages are similar to and different from other European languages. Both archaeological and linguist approaches have been employed in this research direction. The linguistic approach to Germanic origins is split among those who favor the Stammbaum theory and those favoring language contact theory. Stammbaum theory posits that Proto-Germanic separated from an ancestral Indo-European parent language. This theoretical approach accounts for similarities between Germanic and other Indo- European languages by posting a period of mutual development. Germanic innovations, on the other hand, occurred in isolation after separation from the parent language. Language contact theory posits that Proto-Germanic was the product of language convergence and this convergence explains features that Germanic shares with other Indo-European languages.

    Legalised Pedigrees: Sayyids and Shiʽi Islam in Pakistan SIMON WOLFGANG FUCHS Abstract This article draws on a wide range of Shiʽi periodicals and monographs from the s until the pre- sent day to investigate debates on the status of Sayyids in Pakistan. I argue that the discussion by reform- ist and traditionalist Shiʽi scholars (ʽulama) and popular preachers has remained remarkably stable over this time period. Both ‘camps’ have avoided talking about any theological or miracle-working role of the Prophet’s kin. This phenomenon is remarkable, given the fact that Sayyids share their pedigree with the Shiʽi Imams, who are credited with superhuman qualities. Instead, Shiʽi reformists and traditionalists have discussed Sayyids predominantly as a specific legal category. They are merely entitled to a distinct treatment as far as their claims to charity, patterns of marriage, and deference in daily life is concerned. I hold that this reductionist and largely legalising reading of Sayyids has to do with the intense competition over religious authority in post-Partition Pakistan. For both traditionalist and reformist Shiʽi authors, ʽulama, and preachers, there was no room to acknowledge Sayyids as potential further competitors in their efforts to convince the Shiʽi public about the proper ‘orthodoxy’ of their specific views. The Bar Council and the Bar Human Rights Committee are particularly concerned about the ongoing detention of the prominent lawyers, Abdolfattah Soltani and Narges Mohammadi who have spent their legal careers advocating for the rule of law in Iran. Abdolfattah Soltani, the lawyer and co-founder with Dr Shirin Ebadi of the Centre for Human Rights Defenders (DHRC) is currently serving a 13-year sentence for “spreading propaganda against the system”, “endangering national security” and “setting up an illegal opposition group”. He was also charged with “accepting an illegal prize” relating to his acceptance of the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award. Mr Soltani has now been in prison for almost six years, despite suffering from numerous medical conditions. Narges Mohammadi, the prominent campaigner against the death penalty (especially for minors) and Vice President of the DHRC, was arrested and sentenced to six years imprisonment in 2012 for “meeting and conspiring against the Islamic Republic,” and “spreading anti-government publicity”. Although she was released in 2013 on medical grounds, she was arrested again in 2015 without notice, to serve the remainder of her sentence.

Andrew Merriwether1 Of particular signifcance to human population history in Eurasia are the migratory events that connected the Near East to Europe after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Utilizing 315 HV*(xH,V) mitogenomes, including 27 contemporary lineages frst reported here, we found the genetic signatures for distinctive movements out of the Near East and South Caucasus both westward into Europe and eastward into South Asia. The parallel phylogeographies of rare, yet widely distributed HV*(xH,V) subclades reveal a connection between the Italian Peninsula and South Caucasus, resulting from at least two (post-LGM, Neolithic) waves of migration. Many of these subclades originated in a population ancestral to contemporary Armenians and Assyrians. One such subclade, HV1b-152, supports a postexilic, northern Mesopotamian origin for the Ashkenazi HV1b2 lineages. In agreement with ancient DNA fndings, our phylogenetic analysis of HV12 and HV14, the two exclusively Asian subclades of HV*(xH,V), point to the migration of lineages originating in Iran to South Asia before and during the Neolithic period. With HV12 being one of the oldest HV subclades, our results support an origin of HV haplogroup in the region defned by Western Iran, Mesopotamia, and the South Caucasus, where the highest prevalence of HV has been found. Te major subclade of R0, haplogroup HV has a pivotal position in human mitochondrial (mtDNA) phylogeny as the ancestral clade to haplogroup H-the most common clade in Europe1 and the best-defned mtDNA hap- logroup according to Phylotree2.

A phylogenetic tree showing the internal structure of this haplogroup was published in 2008. A high degree of internal diversity characterizes this haplogroup, as well as the presence of a set of chromosomes undefined on the basis of a derived character. Here we make an effort to update the phylogeny of this highly diverse haplogroup by including seven mutations which have been newly discovered by direct resequencing. We also try to incorporate five previously-described markers which were not, however, reported in the 2008 tree. Additionally, during the process of mapping, we found that two previously reported SNPs required a new position on the tree. There are three key changes compared to the 2008 phylogeny. Firstly, haplogroup E-M2 (former E1b1a) and haplogroup E-M329 (former E1b1c) are now united by the mutations V38 and V100, reducing the number of E1b1 basal branches to two. The new topology of the tree has important implications concerning the origin of haplogroup E1b1. Secondly, within E1b1b1 (E-M35), two haplogroups (E-V68 and E- V257) show similar phylogenetic and geographic structure, pointing to a genetic bridge between southern European and northern African Y chromosomes.
