Alison Healey TERMS AND SPELLING 'Religion Department' Over the years, the specialist sector of the ABC charged with the production of religious programmes has had various titles: Religion Department, Religious Department, Religious Broadcasts Department, Religious Programmes, Religious Programs. In recent times the word, 'Unit', has been used, rather than 'Department'. For convenience, one title, 'Religion Department', is used throughout most of this study; it is occasionally replaced by 'Religion Unit' in discussion of the period after 1990. When 'Department' is used without an accompanying descriptive word or phrase, and with a capital 'D', it refers to the 'Religion Department'. 'Head' The person finally responsible for religious programmes has had different titles over the years, such as Special Talks Officer, Federal Supervisor, Federal Director, Specialist Editor. However, 'Head' has been a term commonly used and, for the sake of simplicity, has been preferred in this text unless the context demands one of the more precise titles. 'Head' is used in reference to the senior officer of other programme departments, also. 'Broadcast' The word, 'broadcast', is used throughout in its general sense of 'communication far and wide' and is applied to television as well as to radio. 1 'Memorandum (memo)' 'Memorandum' in the main text, and 'memo' in the notes, refers to a communication produced and circulated within the ABC, unless otherwise specified. 'Programme' There has been a spelling shift in Australia over time from 'programme' to 'program', but the shift has been neither complete nor consistent. For convenience, one form of spelling only will be used throughout, except in a quoted title, and 'programme' has been chosen since it is an acceptable form for the whole period under discussion, whereas 'program' would be quite incongruous in reference to material dated earlier than the 1960s. The Australian Bmadcasting Corporation Act 1983 distinguished between 'broadcasting' and 'television', i.e., 'broadcasting' implied radio only. The Report of the Royal Commission on Radio Broadcasting in 1929 and American broadcasting both changed the direction of Canadian broadcasting, but were mitigated by the early, largely unregulated years. Broadcasters operated initially as small, indepen- dent, and local broadcasters, then, national networks developed in stages during the 1920s and 1930s. The late adoption of radio broadcasting policy to build a national network in Canada allowed other practices to take root in the wake of other examples, in particular, American commercial broadcasting. By 1929 when the Aird Report recommended a national net- work, the potential impact of the report was shaped by the path of early broadcasting and the shifts forced on Canada by American broadcasting and policy. Eventually Canada forged its own course that pulled in both directions, permitting both private commercial networks and public national networks.     CHAPTER 5 EXTERNAL FACTORS IN THE DECLINE OF THE PHILHARMONIC The decline and ultimate demise of the Royal Philharmonic Society of Sydney can be attributed to many factors. The evidence in the previous chapter has shown that the absence of a strong and long-term conductor during the second half of the Philharmonic’s existence hampered the organisation’s advancement. This artistic deterioration was further worsened by an increase in internal arguments, specifically among members of the committee. Later, during the Lastelle years, this conflict was felt between members of the choir and their conductor. These internal issues were further compounded by other significant factors. Externally, the Philharmonic faced a change in musical trends, increase in competition from several sources, specifically the ABC, and an ongoing lack of support from the city and state governments. As the Philharmonic faced artistic decline, the response from the press became more negative and public support for the ensemble waned. A close examination of these external factors will reveal the part they played in the collapse of the Royal Philharmonic Society of Sydney. A Change in Musical Trends and an Increase in Competition The amateur choral music society was an institution of the nineteenth century. Today, however, with the victo- ries of the civil rights era and the emergence of advanced forms of media communication, many of these dynamic personalities have gained wider visibility both nationally and internationally. To channel-surf from BET to TBN to MBC to the Word Network is to witness the creative genius and artistic imaginations of these religious fgures. And it would be vir- tually impossible to enter any African American Christian congregation and fnd someone who had not heard of such televangelists as Bishop T. D. Jakes, Bishop Eddie Long, and Pastor Crefo Dollar. These preach- ers seem to have become ubiquitous in black popular culture as a result of their constant television broadcasts, mass video distributions, printed publications, gospel stage plays, musical recordings, and gargantuan congregations.     MEDIA RELEASE Embargoed October 13, 2012 11.30pm local state time O October 15 Respected radio executive Graham15 October 20Mott11 inducted into Hall of Fame One of radio’s most respected and well-liked executives, Graham Mott, has been inducted into the Commercial Radio Hall of Fame at the 2012 Australian Commercial Radio Awards (ACRAs). Graham was honoured for his outstanding lifetime achievement and contribution to the radio broadcasting industry at a gala ceremony, attended by 1300 of his industry peers at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in Sydney. Most recently General Manager of Fairfax Radio Network, Graham began his radio career as a talk radio panel operator at 2GB in 1969. He went on to hold many positions at talk and music stations over the next 42 years including program producer, production manager, operations manager, music director, program director and general manager. He worked at a variety of radio stations including 2SM, 2GB, 3AW, 2WS and 2UW.. Graham was also a Commercial Radio Australia Board member for many years as well as Chairing the industry Research Committee at various times. Married with four children, Graham and his wife live in Melbourne. Graham was honoured by some of the industry’s biggest names at tonight’s ACRAS including Neil Mitchell, Derryn Hinch and Ross Stevenson. Commercial Radio Australia chief executive officer, Joan Warner said: “Graham Mott has been a staunch supporter of commercial radio for many years and has contributed greatly to its growth and development on many levels.” The Hall of Fame recipients are nominated by industry peers and are selected by a high level judging committee.
