DENVER ROCKETS AND UTAH STARS TO PLAY IN MISSOULA SEPT. 27 fultz/jp 9-6-73 sports sports local++ Information Services tan missoula, montana 59801 • (406) 243-2522 MISSOULA·· The Denver Rockets and the Utah Stars of the American Basketball Association will play a pre-season game in Missoula's Adams Fieldhouse Thursday September 27. The 8 p.m. contest will be one of three that the two club's will play in the state of Montana. They meet in Butte the following night and will be in Billings Saturday night. The Utah Stars captured the ABA's Western Division title in 1973 and boast of super- stars Willie Wise and Zelmo Beaty. Utah is the first ABA franchise to win SO or more games in three consecutive seasons. The Rockets have the ABA's highest scoring guard in Ralph Simpson. Denver coach Alex Hannum considers Simpson, who dropped out of Michigan State before his collegiate eligibility expired, "another Oscar Robertson". HI# .

Head CoaCH pat douglass PAT DOUGLASS 13th Season at Douglass, entering his 13th season as head coach at UC Irvine in 2009-10, is the longest-tenured and winningest coach in the 44-year Phistory of the Anteater program. He became the program’s all-time leader in wins in 2008 as he has compiled an Anteater record of 183-173 in the past 12 years. Douglass passed previous leader Bill Mulligan (163) in a 74-59 win over Pacific Feb. 14, 2008. Douglass leads all Big West Conference coaches with 559 victories at the four-year collegiate level. In his 28th season in the four-year ranks, he is 559-292. Douglass gained victory No. 500 in his four-year collegiate coaching career when the Anteaters stunned then-No. 13 Stanford, 79-63, at Maples Pavilion Nov. 19, 2005. Douglass guided UCI to three consecutive 20-win seasons (2001, 2002 and 2003) and he led the program to two consecutive regular-season Big West Conference titles (2001 & 2002, the school’s first). He also guided UCI to National Invitation Tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002. Douglass led the Anteaters to the program’s most successful season in 2000-01 when UCI finished with an overall record of 25-5, setting a new school mark for single-season victories. Douglass was selected as 2001 Big West Conference Coach of the Year by his peers. The Anteaters advanced to the 2001 NIT, losing 75-71 on the road to Tulsa, the eventual NIT champion. Douglass was selected District 15 Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and also was named the 2000-01 National Coach of the Year for mid-major schools by College Hoops Insider.

(Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to signiﬁcant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we ﬁnd that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

LOUIS/ATLANTA HAWKS STAR ZELMO BEATY TO BE ENSHRINED INTO NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME ATLANTA, GA — Former St. Louis and Atlanta Hawks center Zelmo Beaty was named yesterday as one of 10 members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2016. Elected via the Veteran’s Committee, Beaty will be posthumously honored September 8-10, 2016 during this year’s Enshrinement festivities in Springfield, MA. Nicknamed “Big Z,” Beaty was a Hawk from 1962-69 (including two All-Star appearances), and in his seven seasons with the organization, averaged 17.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 34.2 minutes. He also played for the Utah Stars of the ABA (where he won a championship and Playoffs MVP in 1971) and the LA Lakers. He was drafted third overall by St. Louis in 1962. As a college star at Prairie View A&M, Beaty led the Panthers to the 1962 NAIA National Championship, while earning the MVP Award. He was named to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. Beaty died on August 27, 2013. voice Volunteers of America, Utah Newsletter November 2012 Rising From the Ashes “I got a call I never wanted to get on the morning of September 16, 2012.” The agency’s new Transition Home for young men was on fire, said Kathy Bray, President & CEO of Volunteers of America, Utah. The house located at 516 South 500 East was about to be renovated so homeless young men could move in this December. The three alarm fire has pushed those plans back. “We are determined to keep the project moving forward. The need for housing for homeless young people is at a critical level.”said Bray. According to investigators, the fire was electrical and was bound to happen sooner or later. “We had just assisted the home’s residents in relocating and were waiting for the building permit when the house caught on fire. We are blessed that no one was in the home when the fire started.” The majority of the third floor is gone and the entire house sustained water, and smoke damage. Ceilings fell in, bathrooms were ruined and plaster fell everywhere. The agency is working with the insurance company to decide on new plans for rebuilding the home. When completed, 14 young homeless men will move in as a transitional housing program. These young men will learn life skills, set goals, enroll in school or training if needed, hold jobs and work on a plan for self sufficiency. Community support for the project has been wonderful, but with the recent fire more support will be needed. VOA received a $30,000 emergency grant from American Express to help with expenses.
