The team trained with Charlie Weiss and played their home games at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. The Irish finished the season with a 9-3 record, culminating in a Fiesta Bowl appearance and the national number 9 ranking. Pre-season Coaching Changes After The 2004 season with a 6-6 record, Notre Dame officials, in a controversial move, 12 fired head coach . The Irish had originally hoped to hire Ufa head coach Urban Meyer, who led the Utes to an unbeaten season, as Meyer was an assistant coach for the Irish for five years and had a clause in his contract stating that he could leave Utah without penalty if Notre Dame offered him a job. When Meyer took over as head coach at Florida, Notre Dame hired Charlie Weiss, the offensive coordinator, making him the first Notre Dame graduate to coach the team since 1963. The lineup changes the Irish have lost a number of players on defense including four former starting defensive backs, three players on the defensive line, including defensive end , and two former starting linebackers, including the honorable all-American Derek Curry, by the end. On the offensive side of the ball, the only key loss for the Irish were Ryan Grant and former and Carlisle Holiday. The Irish returned ten starters on offense and four defensively. Recruits with poor recruiting were one of the problems that led to Willingham's dismissal, WithEs being challenged to coach the Patriots offense throughout the day and work on recruiting players for the Irish on the night. He was heavily involved in recruiting, including sending seven of his assistant coaches to a rookie who was fired after Willingham's sacking (a recruiter, however, signed with the Ohio State Buckeyes). Weiss, with some of Willingham's rookie signings as well, has built a class of 15 recruits, including five four-star star recruits. He sought to find experienced coaches who could make the team competitive. When the new assistants were announced in January they were billed as having 25 seasons as collegiate head coach, 50 seasons as coordinators, 12 seasons as NFL assistant coaches, and 42 bowl wins. Before the season, however, assistant offensive head and coach David Catcliffe, after heart surgery and being on sick leave, decided to retire, saying he felt his absence was unfair to players and coaches. Peter Vaas was appointed as Catcliffe's replacement in early June. Vaas was a former six-year NFL Europe head coach, an eight-year collegiate head coach, and 17 years of assistant coaching experience, including two years at Notre Dame under Lou Holtz. On October 29, only halfway through the season, Weiss, who originally signed a six-year contract with the Irish, was offered a contract extension. The new 10-year contract cost between $30 million and $40 million, making him the highest-paid coach in college football. The extension was seen as controversial, as Weiss's record was 5-2 at the time, while Willingham began his first season with an 8-0 record. The Panthers were led by their first-year head coach Dave Wannstedt and a junior quarterback and two-year starter, Tyler Palko. At Notre Dame, the previous season, Palco became the first quarterback to throw five passes against the Irish in a 41-38 victory. Palko started the scoring this year with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Greg Lee, but Brady and the Irish responded with a 51-yard touchdown pass to Darius Walker. The Panthers completed the first quarter scoring with a 49-yard by Josh Cummings to take a 10-7 lead into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Irish took control of the situation. The quarter began with a 2-yard touchdown run by Walker. Later, Rashon Powers-Neal scored on his 2-yard run, and, after a on kickoff return, less than a minute later, quinn threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Samardzija, the first touchdown catch of his career, to give the Irish a 28-10 lead. Cummings hit a 23-yard field goal to cut the Irish lead to 15, but late in the half Powers-Neal ran for a 9-yard touchdown, giving the Irish a 35-13 lead at halftime. In the second half we scored much less. In the third quarter, Powers-Neal ran for a 4-yard touchdown, the only score of the quarter, to give the Irish their final score. In the fourth quarter, Palco ran for his 4-yard touchdown, and the two-point conversion was the game's final score. The Irish won 42-21 and jumped to 23rd place in the Rating. Michigan moved up to 3rd in the country with a preseason ranking of four after a 16-point win over Northern Illinois. Coming into the season, Michigan hasn't lost a home game since 2002 with a 16-game series and hasn't lost a non- conference home game since 1998. In addition, despite beating the Wolverines twice in the past three years, including a 28-20 victory over the 7th-seeded Wolverines in 2004, the Irish have not won at Michigan since 1993. The Irish started the game with the ball, and walked across the field with a 76-yard drive that culminated in Brady's 5-yard touchdown pass to Rema McKnight. Late in the quarter, key Wolverines running back Mike Hart was injured during the run, keeping him out for the rest of the game. In the second quarter, on Michigan's first drive past the 50-yard line, Garrett Rivas was able to hit a 38-yard field goal to make the score 7-3 in favor of the Irish. Later in the quarter, the Irish lost McKnight to what would later be revealed as a season-ending knee injury. The two sides led the Irish on another long drive, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass by Jeff Samardzija to give the Irish a 14-3 lead at halftime. The second half was filled with missed opportunities for the Wolverines. Early in the third quarter, Henn and running back Kevin Grady led the Wolverines on a 69-yard drive that was finally stopped by a by Henn safety Tom Zbikowski at the Irish 1-yard line. Much of the rest of the quarter consisted of short drives that were stopped early forcing each team to punt. In the Wolverines' final drive of the quarter, the Irish defense held them to their own 9-yard line, and forced a punt that was returned to Michigan's 33-yard line. While the Irish only advanced the ball 7-yards out, early in the fourth quarter DI Fitzpatrick kicked a 43-yard field goal to give the Irish a 17-3 lead. On their next possession, Walker's fumble was restored by the Wolverines at the Irish 18-yard line. After driving on the 5-yard line, the Wolverines couldn't convert a fourth down turned the ball over to the Irish. On the Wolverines' next possession, on another fourth-down attempt near midfield, Henne completed a 54-yard pass to Jason Avant, which was decided at the Irish 1-yard line. On the next play, however, Henne fumbled the ball into the endzone and it was restored by Chinedum Ndukwe for the Irish. On the Wolverines' next possession, Henne threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to to bring the score to 17-10. Michigan had one final possession with two minutes remaining, but failed, once more, to convert a fourth down, sealing the win for the Irish. With the victory, Weis became the first coach of Dame Notre with Knute Rockne to win his first two games on the road, 23 and the Irish moved to 12th in the nation. Michigan State 1 2 3 4OT Total Spartans 14 10 14 06 44 #10 Irish 7 10 7 143 41 Irish next had their home opener against Michigan State Spartans, a rivalry game with the Megaphone Trophy given to the winner. The Spartans, this year's team led by coach John L. Smith and second-year starting quarterback Drew Stanton, hopes to become only the second team to beat the Irish at Notre Dame for five consecutive games. Despite winning in 2004, the Irish have lost six of their last eight games against the Spartans. The Spartans led most of the game at one point, late in the third quarter after Stanton threw a 65-yard pass for their third touchdown of the game, they had a 38-17 lead. The Irish, however, came back later in the quarter and tied the game at 38 during the fourth quarter, with three touchdown passes to Brady quinn to give him a total of five for the game. In overtime, the Irish, with the ball first, missed three try passes to quinn in the endzone, and settled on a field goal to give them a 41-38 lead. On the Spartans' second game in overtime, Stanton, during the run option, smashed jason Teague's ball for a 19-yard touchdown to win the game. The Irish dropped to 18th place, while the Spartans entered the national rankings in 23rd place after a week. After the game, apparently frustrated that he didn't have the MegaPhone Trophy to lift after the win, a small group of Spartans planted a Michigan State flag on the field. A number of other flag-planting incidents occurred after the incident, leading to a ban on the practice by the Big Ten. The Huskies entered a game never beaten by the Irish in five meetings, including a 38-3 loss at Notre Dame in 2004. On the first drive of the game, the Huskies easily moved forward on the Irish defence, however, were held without scoring when the defender, Isaiah Stanback, passed Chambers was fumbled at the goal line and recovered by the Irish. The Irish didn't score on their first drive when the hold-up for a field goal attempt was unsuccessful. However, on his next drive DJ Fitzpatrick kicked a 25- yard field goal for the only score in the first quarter. Evan Knudson equalized on a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter. On the next drive, Darius Walker ran for a 17-yard touchdown, giving the Irish a 9-3 lead after missing an extra point. Fitzpatrick kicked another 39-yard field goal before the end scored in the first half with the Irish leading 12-3. After two Irish failed fourth-down attempts and the Huskies fumble, Rashon Powers-Neal ran for a 2-yard touchdown to give the Irish a 19-3 lead late in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Fitzpatrick kicked another field goal of 23 yards to extend the Irish lead to 19. Later in the quarter, Brady quinn threw his only touchdown of the game with a 52-yard pass to Jeff Samardzija. Stanback led the Huskies for their first touchdown, culminating in a 1-yard run by Mark Palaita, but the Irish responded with an 11-yard touchdown to Travis Thomas for their final score of the game. With three minutes left in the game, Stanback was replaced by backup quarterback Johnny Durocher, who threw a 41-yard touchdown to the Timbers to give the final score 36-17. While the Irish led the all-time series against Purdue 49-25-2, the Boilermakers had won the previous two meetings and were hoping to return after a double overtime loss last week. While neither team was able to score on their first drives, the Irish quickly got going for their second, and were led by Brady's quinn passing and Darius Walker rushes for a 90-yard drive that ended with Rashon Powers-Neal's 1-yard touchdown to give the Irish the lead. The Boilermakers, led by Brandon Kirsch at the Irish 2-yard line, were unable to respond after the goal line fumble was restored by the Irish. The lead was then led by the Irish on a 98-yard drive that lasted in the second quarter, and ended another 1-yard touchdown run by Powers-Neal. The ensuing start was returned by Dorieen Bryant 66 yards to give the Boilermakers the ball at the Notre Dame 30-yard line, however, they were unable to propel it and did not score because of a missed 43-yard field goal. the queen took advantage and led the Irish on a 73-yard drive ending with a touchdown pass to Jeff Samardzija. The Irish started the fourth quarter scoring with a 22-yard touchdown pass from quinn John Carlson, for quinn's final series of the game, he will be replaced by backup David Wolf and Marty Mooney for the last three drives. The Trojans, led by coach Pete Carroll and Heisman-winning senior quarterback Matt Leinart, ranked first in the nation, were on a 27-game winning streak, and won three consecutive meetings with the Irish, each by 31 points. Expectations, however, were high that this game would be closer. Brady and the offense, wearing green jerseys, are lining up for the game in a surprise move, after Weiss insisted it wouldn't happen, the Irish wore green jerseys for the game. The scoreline was back and forth for most of the game, with the Irish leading 21-14 at halftime after a pair of , running backs Reggie Bush and LenDale White for the Trojans, and a rushing touchdown to Travis Thomas, a passing touchdown by Brady quinn, and a punt return for a touchdown by Tom Zbikowski for a touchdown. The Trojans took a 28-24 lead with five minutes left in the game when Reggie Bush ran for his third touchdown of the game, however, quinn responded with four full passes and his own 5-yard touchdown run to give the Irish a 31-28 lead with less than two minutes left. On the Trojans' last series, however, Leinart, after being sacked and facing a fourth down at his own 26-yard line, completed a 61-yard fade by Dwayne Jarrett to give the Trojans one last chance near the Irish goal line. After a series of games including Leinart fumbling the ball out of bounds, the stadium clock wrong wasting time, and part of Notre Dame's student section rushing the field, the Trojans ball at the Irish 1-yard line with seven seconds left. Instead of opting for a goal on the field and going into overtime, Leinart tried to sneak into the end zone. When he was stopped in a game that would be called Bush Push, Bush pushed him over the goal line to win the score 34-31. On June 10, 2010, the NCAA found that Busch was ineligable to participate in athletics in the 2005 season, and USC was forced to vacate all victories from that year. Still, the loss is still counting on Notre Dame. The Cougars were led by junior quarterback John Beck and first-year head coach Bronco Mendenhall. The Cougars had a 3-3 record but had won their previous two games. The Cougars started the scoring with a 45-yard field goal, but Brady quinn, completing six of seven passes on his first drive, threw a 10-yard touchdown to Maurice Stovall to take the lead. Beck led the Cougars on a drive that included Mike's interception that was fumbled and recovered from the Cougars and finished with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Harlin. The Cougars led 10-7 late in the first quarter, but a pair of 15-yard quinn touchdown passes by Jeff Samardzija and Stovall gave the Irish a 21-10 lead at halftime. In the third, quinn completed three long touchdown passes, two Stovall and one samardzija, while Beck ran for a touchdown and threw another to Todd Watkins to end the third quarter with the Irish leading 42-23. The final score of the game came in the fourth when Beck's pass was intercepted by Tom Sbikowski and returned 83 yards, giving the final score of the game with an Irish victory of 49-23. The Irish won their first home game of the season and moved up to ninth place nationally. Tennessee 1 2 3 4 Total Volunteers 3 7 11 0 21 #9 Irish 14 7 0 20 41 quinn directs offense against Tennessee Irish following playing struggling Tennessee Volunteers. The last time the teams met in Tennessee was in 2004, when the Irish surprised the top-15 ranked Volunteers with a 17-13 victory. The volunteers were led by coach Philippe Fulmer and defenseman Eric Ayinge. When the Volunteers didn't score on the first drive of the game, the Irish took advantage, with Brady quinn leading an Irish drive that ended with his 43-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Fasano. The ensuing start was fumbled by the Volunteers, and quinn threw his second touchdown to Maurice Stovall three plays later. The Volunteers' kicker, James Wilhout kicked a 26-yard field goal for their only score in the quarter. In the second quarter, on a volunteer punt, Tom Zbikowski returned the ball 43-yards to give the Irish a 21-3 lead. After a quinn fumble that was recovered by the Volunteers, Ainge led a 40-yard drive and threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Bret Smith to give the halftime score 21-10. In the second half, after a botched fourth-down conversion by the Irish, Wilhout kicked a 30-yard field goal to put the Volunteers down at 8. When the Irish didn't respond, Ayinge and running back Arian Foster led the Volunteers to Foster's 3-yard touchdown. With Smith's Ainge pass completed for a two-point conversion, the game was tied at 21 at the end of the third. In the fourth quarter, however, the Irish scored 20, including two D.J. Fitzpatrick field goals, a quinn touchdown pass to Jeff Samardzija, and an interception by zbikowski returning for a touchdown. Without answers from the Volunteers, the Irish won the game 41-21. With the win, he continued his Irish record streak to 13 games, Samardzija's touchdown pass, his 12th record for touchdown catches of the season, and the Irish climbed to 7th place nationally. Navy 1 2 3 3 Total Navy 7 0 7 7 21 #7 Irish 7 21 7 7 42 Irish next played Navy midshipmen, a team the Irish have played annually since 1927, and beaten in 41 games in a row, NCAA winning streak. Navy was led by option quarterback Lamar Owens and coach Paul Johnson. The game began with a 73-yard Irish drive that ended with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Brady's to Maurice Stovall. Navy responded after a 69- yard drive that took half a quarter when Adam Ballard ran for an 8-yard touchdown. After both teams failed to convert on a fourth drop in the second quarter, quinn led the Irish to Travis Thomas' 12-yard touchdown run. On the next possession of the Navy, a fumble by Owens was restored by the Irish. He completed two passes on the drive and Darius Walker ran for a 12-yard touchdown. After a navy punt, quinn's pass to Anthony Fasano for an 8-yard touchdown gave the Irish a 28-7 lead at halftime. A six-minute drive from the Navy to start the second half ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Owens to bring the Navy to within two touchdowns, but quinn responded on the next drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Stovall. After both teams threw interceptions, quinn threw his fourth touchdown of the game, a 10-yard pass to Stovall. With Brian Hampton's 17-yard touchdown to Tyree Barnes, The Navy finished scoring in the game. The Irish won 42-21, with quinn increasing his Notre Dame-record touchdown passing streak to 14 games, and the team extending its record winning streak over navy to 42 games. Syracuse 1 2 3 4 Total Orange 3 0 0 7 10 #7 Irish 0 14 10 10 34 Notre Dame in the next game, and the final home game of the season, came against 1-8 Syracuse Orange. Syracuse, led by first-year coach Greg Robinson and quarterback Perry Patterson, spoiled the Irish chance of not having a losing season in 2003 when they defeated the Irish at carrier dome by 26. This year, however, it seemed that Orange, ranked last in total yards, were overly matched. The Orange, however, failed to keep up with the Irish in the first quarter, and after a failed field goal attempt by DJ Fitzpatrick, and a 51-yard run by Damien Rhodes on a subsequent drive, Orange scored the game's first points with a 31-yard field goal by John Barker. On the next Irish drive, Fitzpatrick's field goal attempt was blocked and Orange retained the lead. However, four minutes later, Brady's 25-yard pass to Maurice Stovall ended the touchdown, giving the Irish the lead. Jeff Samardzija's 30-yard pass, on the second play of the next Irish drive, gave the Irish a 14-3 lead that they would have at halftime. On the first play of the third quarter, Patterson was intercepted by Leo Ferrin, who returned it 17 yards for a touchdown to give the Irish a 21-3 lead. After a botched fourth attempt down the Orange goal line and a pair of orange punts, Fitzpatrick gave the Irish a 24-3 lead with his 44-yard field goal. In the Fitzpatrick kicked a 29-yard field goal, Darius Walker ran for a 3-yard touchdown, and Patterson threw a toss A touchdown by Joseph Kowalski for the only Orange touchdown of the day to give the final score 34-10 in favor of the Irish. With the game, he continued his record-breaking touchdown streak to Notre Dame, and the Irish moved to 6th nationally. They were also one win away from being eligible for the BCS bowl. Stanford 1 2 3 4 Total #6 Irish 14 0 6 18 38 Cardinal 7 7 0 17 31 Final Irish Regular Season Test came on the road against 5-5 Stanford Cardinal, in the last game at Stanford Stadium before it is repaired. Stanford, coached by first-year coach Walt Harris and quarterback Trent Edwards, and Notre Dame have played annually since 1997 and have minor rivalries for the Legends Trophy. The Irish had won three previous seasons when coached by former Cardinal head coach Ty Willingham, and the Cardinal didn't look to have many chances in this game after losing in the Big Game to rival California, with the Bears outrushing the Cardinal for 210 yards. The Irish advanced early to the second game, when Brady quinn threw an 80-yard touchdown to Jeff Samardzija, but edwards tied the game with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Mark Bradford. The Irish scored the last points in the quarters with another quinn touchdown in Samardzija, this time for 7 yards, to bring the game to 14-7 in favor of the Irish. In the second quarter, after both teams failed to convert a fourth drop, Edwards' 38-yard pass to Justin McCallum tied the game again. Although quinn threw his second interception of the game late in the quarter, neither team scored again in the half. In the third quarter, quinn threw his third touchdown to Maurice Stovall for 10 yards, however, D.J. Fitzpatrick missed an extra point and left the Irish only winning by six. With Fitzpatrick's missed 42-yard field goal, and the Cardinal not scoring in the quarter, the Irish took a 20-14 lead into the fourth quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Carl Gioia replaced Fitzpatrick and kicked a 29-yard field goal to put the Irish to two points, however, on his kickoff, T.J. Rushing returned the ball 87-yards to bring the Cardinal within two points. The quinn then brought the Irish on an 80-yard drive that ended with Travis Thomas' 8-yard touchdown run. The Cardinal were only able to respond with a 31-yard field goal that made the score 30-24 in favor of the Irish. Fitzpatrick was brought in during the next Irish drive, but missed a 29-yard field goal that would put the Irish up by two scores. The Cardinal, who brought in backup quarterback T.C. Ostander when Edwards didn't move the ball in the third quarter, capitalized on a miss and took the lead on Matt Traverso's 4-yard pass, with less than two minutes left in the game. He then completed three long passes and Darius Walker ran the last 6 yards for a go-ahead touchdown. A Walker's snap on a two-point conversion put the Irish on a touchdown with less than a minute left. Ostender was able to bring the Cardinal to their 38-yard line on a 14-yard pass, but was dismissed on fourth down to seal the win for the Irish, 38-31. With the victory, the Irish were eligible for the BCS Cup, and although falling to 7th place in the rankings, they finished 6th in the BCS and were invited to the Fiesta Bowl. Fiesta Bowl 1 2 3 4 Total #6 Irish 7 0 6 7 20 #4 Buckeyes 7 14 3 10 34 Main Article: 2006 Fiesta Bowl With 9 wins and ranking 6th in BCS polls, the Irish were invited to the Fiesta Bowl held at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe Arizona, to face the number 4th place Ohio State Buckeys. The BCS appearance was only the second for the Irish and the first since the 2000 loss to the Oregon Beavers in the Fiesta Bowl. The Buckeyes, led by coach Jim Tressel and junior quarterback Troy Smith, had a 9-2 record, with losses to BCS rival Penn State and eventual national champion Texas. Although both teams had a long football history, they had met only four times before this game, the last in 1996. The Irish came out ahead early on Darius Walker's 20-yard run, but Smith responded to the Buckeyes three minutes later with a 56-yard pass to Ted Ginn Jr. to tie the game. After Smith fumbled the ball at Buckeye's 15-yard line, the Irish had another chance to take the lead. However, after not getting a first down after three plays, they tried a fourth-down conversion, during which quinn was sacked. Without scoring, the quarter ended with the game tied at 7. On the third play of the second quarter, Smith once again scored a touchdown on a 68-yard pass to Ginn to give the Buckeyes a lead they would never give up. On the Buckeyes' next drive, Smith led them to the Irish 15-yard line before his fumble was restored by the Irish. The Irish, however, couldn't take advantage, and on the Buckeyes' next drive Smith threw an 85-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes to give the Buckeyes a 21-7 lead. With a blocked field goal attempt by the Buckeyes, the score remained the same at the half. In the third quarter, the Irish blocked a second field goal attempt, and finally took advantage with a 10-yard rushing touchdown to Walker. With a missed extra point and a 40-yard field goal by Josh Houston on the Buckeyes' next possession, the Buckeyes took a 24-13 lead in the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Houston added another field goal, and Walker ran for the third touchdown before Antonio Pittman ran for his 60-yard touchdown for the game's final score. The Buckeyes won 34-20, 49 giving the Irish their NCAA record-tying 8th straight bowl game defeat. Notre Dame also finished 2-2 against Big Ten schools in 2005. After Notre Dame's season record By the end of the season, the 2005 team installed 47 Notre Dame teams individual records. The team set 11 season records, including most points (440) and most offensive yards (5,728). Four players have set individual season records, including Jeff Samardzija's touchdown receptions (15), Brady quinn's touchdown passes (32), Darius Walker's receptions running back (43), and DJ Fitzpatrick's PATs (52). Seven individual game records were set, including a touchdown by quinn (6) and a reception by Maurice Stovall (14). Samardzija set the record with eight consecutive touchdown catches, Walker another record with four consecutive 100-yard rushing games, and a record of 16 consecutive games with a touchdown pass that began in 2004 and ended in the Fiesta Bowl. With his record this season, quinn has 30 Notre Dame individual records, including a game with 300-yard passing (5) becoming the only Irish player to throw for 400 yards per game more than once. A number of Irish players and coaches have been named as finalists and postseason winners. Head coach Charlie Weiss has been named Football Writers Association of America coach of the year by Eddie Robinson.
