The project, funded by DFID and administered by the World Bank, had the overall objective of ―transforming the way in which Acehnese youth deal with conflict, away from adversarial approaches towards cooperative solutions‖. It lasted 10 months and included four main activity components: trainings on media production and conflict management; outreach events in each of nine working districts; Aceh Youth View Report presenting youth issues to local decision makers, and; production and broadcasting of two youth radio programs (see Annex III, for more details). Some of the positive impacts of the AYRP pilot include: All participants and radio presenters acquired knowledge in media production and conflict resolution; most of the participants now use expertise learned from AYRP for other jobs; AYRP enhanced -

All day long the delegates at the 2005 Harvard conference on 20th-century studio ceramics had been listening to presentations on the Mingei movement in Japan, debating the role of folk art and the importance of Bernard Leach, a British potter who settled in Japan and became very influential. But as the main course was cleared away, those sitting at a table to one side of the room became captivated by a tale being recounted by another British potter, Edmund de Waal. It was about the Japanese netsuke his family had bought in the 1870s. Within half a century, they were one of the richest in Vienna, with a grand house on the Ringstrasse. At the Anschluss in 1938 the netsuke disappeared; stolen, the family thought. It was only after the war that they discovered they’d been hidden from the Nazis by a faithful servant, Anna. “This would make such a great book,” said Michael Goldfarb, a New York collector and one of those listening. “Edmund, you’ve got to stop talking and start writing. This is the book you were born to write.” Published in June 2010, “The Hare with Amber Eyes” has become the most successful family memoir of the decade. -

Kennedy had just been assassinated, the Civil Rights Act was mere months from inception, and the US was becoming more heavily involved in the conflict in Vietnam. It was 1964, and at The Factory in New York, Andy Warhol was experimenting with film. Over the course of two years, Andy Warhol selected regulars to his factory, both famous and anonymous that he felt had “star potential” to sit and be filmed in one take, using 100 foot rolls of film. It has been documented that Warhol shot nearly 500 screen tests, but not all were kept. Many of his screen tests have been curated into groups that start with “13 Most Beautiful…” To accompany these film portraits, Dean & Britta, formerly of the NY band, Luna, were commissioned by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to create original songs, and remixes of songs from musicians of the era. This endeavor led Dean & Britta to a third studio album consisting of a total of 21 songs titled, “13 Most Beautiful.. -
The Ethics of Eating Animals in Tudor and Stuart Theaters
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: THE ETHICS OF EATING ANIMALS IN TUDOR AND STUART THEATERS Rob Wakeman, Doctor of Philosophy, 2016 Dissertation directed by: Professors Theresa Coletti and Theodore B. Leinwand Department of English, University of Maryland A pressing challenge for the study of animal ethics in early modern literature is the very breadth of the category “animal,” which occludes the distinct ecological and economic roles of different species. Understanding the significance of deer to a hunter as distinct from the meaning of swine for a London pork vendor requires a historical investigation into humans’ ecological and cultural relationships with individual animals. For the constituents of England’s agricultural networks – shepherds, butchers, fishwives, eaters at tables high and low – animals matter differently. While recent scholarship on food and animal ethics often emphasizes ecological reciprocation, I insist that this mutualism is always out of balance, both across and within species lines. Focusing on drama by William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and the anonymous authors of late medieval biblical plays, my research investigates how sixteenth-century theaters use food animals to mediate and negotiate the complexities of a changing meat economy. On the English stage, playwrights use food animals to impress the ethico-political implications of land enclosure, forest emparkment, the search for new fisheries, and air and water pollution from urban slaughterhouses and markets. Concurrent developments in animal husbandry and theatrical production in the period thus led to new ideas about emplacement, embodiment, and the ethics of interspecies interdependence. The group Black Visions, which is based in Minneapolis and has been integral to the protest movement that erupted following the killing of George Floyd. By Jenna Wortham Aug. 25, 2020 On a windswept early June day in Minneapolis, roughly a thousand people gathered under sprawling trees in Powderhorn Park for a rally called the Path Forward. The park’s concrete stage was decorated with silver streamers that sparkled in the breeze and bold white block letters that spelled out “Defund Police.” After a prayer by Thorne and Wakinyan LaPointe, brothers from the American Indian community, Kandace Montgomery, a director of a local organizing group called Black Visions, took the stage. 2 She reminded the crowd to maintain social distancing and wished Prince — whose former home, Paisley Park, was just a 30-minute drive away — and his “queer, nonbinary, everything and all the things self” a posthumous happy birthday. The atmosphere was still raw. Just 13 days had passed since George Floyd had died, igniting one of the largest collective demonstrations of civil unrest over the violence perpetrated against Black people in this country. Calls led by young Black activists to defund and abolish the police rippled outward from Minneapolis and around the world. Black Visions was established three years ago as a political and community base for Black people in Minneapolis. -

For the first time since World War II, 41 relatives from around Europe, the United States and Mexico toured the neo-Renaissance building that had been home to the Ephrussi family, European Jews whose wealth once rivaled that of the Rothschilds. “Itʼs not just a nice family gathering — itʼs a political act,” said Mr. de Waal in an interview the next day. Mr. De Waal, a British ceramic artist and best-selling author, is the great-grandson of Viktor von Ephrussi, who thrived in Vienna as a banker before fleeing the city after Hitler’s 1938 incorporation of Austria into the Third Reich. On Tuesday, the country’s president, Alexander Van der Bellen, welcomed the family to an exhibition opening nearby that tells their story. “The Ephrussis: Travel in Time,” at the Jewish Museum Vienna through March 8, presents the family’s history through documents, photographs and souvenirs that Mr. de Waal donated to the museum last year.
