  • Why Did Cleveland Indians Sign Mike Napoli Instead of Pedro Alvarez?
Why did Cleveland Indians sign Mike Napoli instead of Pedro Alvarez? Hey, Hoynsie Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Do you have a question that you'd like to have answered in Hey, Hoynsie? Submit it here or Tweet him at @hoynsie. Hey, Hoynsie: Why did the Indians sign Mike Napoli, 34, for one year to play first base when Pedro Alvarez, 27, was available? Did management know Alvarez hit 27 home runs last season? -- Jimmy Garst, Roanoke, Va. Hey, Jimmy: The Indians did show interest in Alvarez, who was non-tendered by the Pirates and became a free agent. I think a couple of things probably came into play: No. 1, Alvarez was more expensive than the $7 million deal the Indians agreed to with Napoli. No. 2, the Indians felt Napoli helped them two ways – he gave their offense needed pop from the right side of the plate and he improved their defense. Napoli – whose deal should soon be made official – allows the Indians to move Carlos Santana to DH while he will get most of the time at first base. There is no doubt about Alvarez's power, but he made 23 errors at first base last season. I think the Indians preferred Napoli, considering the cost, at first and Santana at DH instead of Santana at first and Alvarez at DH. Hey, Hoynsie: The Reds seem interested in moving outfielder Jay Bruce. Is the Tribe done with its outfield or would it be interested in a guy who is as streaky hitter as there is, but definitely has pop? – Carl Neifer, Cincinnati.

A Bayesian Hierarchical Model To Estimate the Framing Ability of Major League Baseball Catchers Sameer K. Deshpande and Abraham J. Wyner Statistics Department, The Wharton School University of Pennsylvania 26 September 2015 Introduction • What exactly is framing? I A catcher's effect on the likelihood a taken pitch is called a strike. • Should we even care about framing? I Lots of attention in popular presst I Several articles on Baseball Prospectus and Hardball Times I \Good framer" can save ∼ 15 - 25 runs per season. I Teams seem to care: Hank Conger, Russell Martin Deshpande & Wyner Catcher Framing NESSIS 2015 2 / 15 Fundamental Question and Our Contribution For any given taken pitch, what is the catcher's effect on likelihood of pitch being called strike over and above factors like: • Pitch Location • Pitch Context: Count, base runners, score differential, etc. • Pitch Participants: batter, pitcher, umpire Our contributions: • Hierarchical Bayesian logistic regression model of called strike probability • Value of a called strike as function of count • Uncertainty estimates of framing impact (runs saved on average) Deshpande & Wyner Catcher Framing NESSIS 2015 3 / 15 PITCHf/x Data PITCHf/x data scraped from MLB Advanced Media: • Horizontal and vertical coordinate of pitch as it crosses plate • Approximate vertical boundaries for the strike zone • Umpire, pitcher, catcher, batter identities • Count Focus only on the 320,308 taken pitches within 1 ft. of the strike zone. LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 46, No. 2, Apr. 24, 2007) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Michael “Mex” Carey Membership: It’s hard to believe that the baseball season is nearing conference tournament time. The season has been a great one so far and things are sure to get more exciting as we get closer to conference tournaments, the NCAA Regionals and the College World Series. A young Georgetown team in the Nation’s Capitol has struggled with some injuries, but the battle for supremacy in the BIG EAST, like many other conferences across the country, are still up for debate. At the same time, our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone at Virginia Tech after the senseless tragedy that unfolded on the Blacksburg campus recently. I was not the only one, I’m sure, who was horrified by the images and though immediately of our friends who work on the campus. Pete Hughes, one of the great coaches in college baseball who I got to know when he was at Boston College and I worked at St. John’s, said it right after the Hokies’ 11-9 loss to Miami in the team’s first game after the tragedy. “We won before we got to the field today. The scoreboard was insignificant.” The board members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association are in the process of selecting names for yearly awards. Last week, the final list for the Stopper of the Year Award will be announced and right behind that, we will have announcements for All-American nominees.
