MAAC Launches “Time Out for Black Lives” • The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced its Time Out for Black Lives initiative which aims to inspire and educate youth, athletes, families and fans. • Time Out for Black Lives has an interactive website where coaches and student-athletes from MAAC basketball programs contribute their time and resources to read children’s books in entertaining videos, all focusing on Black culture, history, music and myths. • The program comes as part of the MAAC’s United for Justice campaign that was announced over the summer.

This is...... Hammond, Solomon Pick Up Preseason Accolades • The backcourt duo of Marcus Hammond and Raheem Solomon have earned preseason NIAGARA BASKETBALL awards from the MAAC and the Big 4. Naismith Memorial Hall of Famers - 2 • Hammond was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team while Solo- Calvin Murphy, Hubie Brown mon was selected to the third team. • Hammond was named to the Preseason All-Big 4 First Team and Solomon was named to NCAA Tournament Appearances - 3 1970, 2005, 2007 the second team. The Preseason All-Big 4 teams are voted on by media and athletic commu- nications staffs that cover Buffalo, Canisius, Niagara, and St. Bonaventure. NIT Appearances - 14 • Hammond became the 14th Purple Eagle to earn All-MAAC First Team honors at the 1950, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1972, 1976, 1987, 1993, 2004, 2009, 2013 conclusion of last season. He averaged career-highs in points (14.3 ppg), rebounds (4.6 rpg), and assists (2.9 apg) to lead the Purple Eagles in all three categories during the 2019-20 season. CIT Apperance - 1 • Solomon, who started in all 32 games last season, posted career-high numbers with 9.6 2018 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting over 39 percent from the fi eld MAAC Tournament Championships - 2 and 81 percent from the free-throw line. 2005, 2007 MAAC Regular Season Championships - 4 Program Sets Numerous Academic Records 1999, 2001, 2005, 2013 • The 2019-20 Purple Eagles excelled in the classroom. The program was recognized for its outstanding academic year with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team MAAC Coach of the Year - 4 Jack Armstrong (1992-93), (1998-99, Academic Excellence Award. The award honors programs who had a grade-point average 2004-05, 2012-13) (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for the 2019-20 season; the Purple Eagles fi nished with a 3.3 GPA. • It was a record setting academic campaign for the Purple Eagles which started with the team NABC District Coach of the Year - 2 Joe Mihalich (2008-09, 2012-13) earning a 3.4 GPA in the summer of 2019. The Purple Eagles followed with a then-record 3.18 GPA in the fall semester. The spring semester welcomed another record-setting GPA as Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year - 1 the Purple Eagles posted a 3.42 GPA with 11 student-athletes earning a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Juan Mendez (2004-05), Kahlil Dukes (2017-18) • Brown III is a 6-foot-4 guard from Albany, who is currently attending Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire. Brown III helped Albany Academy to the New MAAC Player of the Years - 4 Alvin Young (1998-99), Demond Stewart (2000-01), York State Federation Tournament of Champions Class A title in 2019. Juan Mendez (2004-05), Kahlil Dukes (2017-18) • Mackey is a 6-foot-3 guard from Grayson, Georgia and is currently attending the Skills Factory (TSF) in Atlanta. GREG PAULUS HEAD COACH Second Season At Niagara 12-20/1st Season Greg Paulus is highly regarded in college athletics for his dedication to the holistic development of student-athletes. His stellar resume includes eight NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament appearances as a player and a coach.

Paulus, who developed his craft after 14 years of playing and coaching at some of the most prestigious programs in collegiate athletics, joined the Purple Eagles staff in May 2019 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He was named Niagara University men’s basketball head coach in November 2019.

Paulus made the 2019-20 Purple Eagles one of the most competitive teams in the MAAC. The Purple Eagles surpassed preseason predictions with Paulus having the Purple Eagles contending near the top of the conference all season and winning ten games against conference opponents. Niagara won a game in the MAAC Tournament for the fi rst time in three seasons after beating Marist in the fi rst round.

The Purple Eagles ranked statistically in the top-25 in the nation in fewest turnovers per game (10.6), in fewest total turnovers (338), in turnover margin (3.3) and 3-point fi eld goal percentage (.372), while leading the MAAC in all four categories. Niagara had the best assist-to-turnover ratio (1.13) in the MAAC as well. Under Paulus’ tutelage, sophomore Marcus Hammond had a career-season en route to being named to the All-MAAC First Team.

Paulus’ accomplishments during his maiden voyage as a head coach were recognized by the industry as he was the recipient of the 2019-20 Joe B. Hall National Coach of the the Award which is presented annually to the top fi rst-year coach in NCAA Division I college basketball.

It was a record-setting 2019-20 academic campaign for the Purple Eagles which started with the team earning a 3.4 GPA in the summer of 2019. The Purple Eagles followed with a then-record 3.18 GPA in the fall semester. The spring semester welcomed another record-setting GPA as the Purple Eagles posted a 3.42 GPA with 11 student-athletes earning a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Eight Purple Eagles earned 2019-20 MAAC Academic Honor Roll accolades for having a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher. Justin Roberts and Steven Levnaic garnered MAAC All-Academic Team honors at the end of the season.

The program was recognized for its outstanding academic year with the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team Academic Excellence Award. The award honors programs that had a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for the 2019-20 season; the Purple Eagles fi nished with a 3.3 GPA.

The Purple Eagles were active in the local community as they practiced the university’s mission of community service. The team sponsored a family during the holiday season through Community Missions of Niagara Frontier, and volunteered at the Magdalene Project at St. George’s Church in Niagara Falls at Thanksgiving.

Paulus, who started at point guard for legendary college basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski at , previously served on the coaching staff at George Washington, Louisville, Ohio State, and Navy.

Paulus was recognized by the NABC 30-Under-30 program and has attended nationally recognized leadership development programs like Villa 7, Ethics Coalition Coaches Academy, and the 2019 Collegiate Coaching Consortium.

Paulus had a successful four-year playing career at Duke (2005-09). A three-year starter and two-time captain for Duke, he played on three ACC Championship teams and four NCAA Tournament teams, helping Duke to a combined 112-28 record while leading the team in assists in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

As a freshman in 2006, Paulus was a member of the ACC All-Freshman First Team, the ACC All-Tournament Second Team and a second-team freshman All-American while averaging 6.7 points and 5.2 assists. He is one of just four freshmen in ACC history to lead the league in assists. He scored 1,193 career points at Duke and ranks among the career top 10 in assists (468), three-point fi eld goals (210) and three-point fi eld goal percentage (.398).

Paulus spent the 2009-10 season at Syracuse as a graduate student transfer on the football team where he was the starting quarterback and captain. He passed for 2,024 yards and 13 touchdowns in 12 games. His 67.7 completion percentage (193-of-285) is a Syracuse single-season record.

Paulus earned ACC All-Academic Team accolades on three occasions and was a two-time Academic All-American Third Team selection. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science with a certifi cate in markets and management studies in 2009. He earned a master’s degree in Television, Radio and Film from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse in 2010, earning 2009 Big East All-Academic Team honors.

Paulus was named the Gatorade High School Football Player of the Year (2004) and the Gatorade High School Male Athlete of the Year (2005) at Christian Brothers Academy. Other recipients of the Gatorade Male Athlete of the Year award are LeBron James (2003), (2004), (2006), (2008) and (2015).
