Route 6 Laleham – Chertsey via Thorpe START/FINISH: Notcutts Garden Centre, TW18 2SF Distance: 10 miles 1 Turn right out of the entrance of Notcutts Garden Centre on Staines Road, going ahead at the mini roundabout to pass The Anglers Retreat on your right. 2 Turn left into Wheatsheaf Lane, soon passing the home of Staines Town FC on the left. Continue straight ahead, ignoring turnings, for 800m until reaching the towpath of the River Thames. 3 Turn right along the towpath to pass under the railway bridge after 1200m. 4 Take the segregated cycle path at the front of the Thames Lodge Hotel before turning left before Riverside Car Park back to the Thames. Follow the river towards Staines Bridge before turning right at the ‘Origami Swans’ statue to the front of the Old Town Hall. 5 Continue ahead to the road to turn left towards and pass over Staines Bridge (on the cycle way). At the end of the bridge railings turn left into The Hythe and follow the road to pass The Boleyn Hotel on the right and reach Chertsey Lane (A320). 6 Turn right and immediately take the turning on the left into Pinetrees Commercial Estate (or use the crossing just to your right). Continue ahead towards the railway line and turn left through the car park where you will fi nd an underpass on the right. Dismount and go through the underpass. 7 After the underpass turn left and immediately right into Wapshott Road. At the end, turn right at the T-junction, to St. Paul’s Road and follow to the church. Turn left on Thorpe Road (shared cycle way) and continue ahead at the fi rst roundabout onto Thorpe Lea Road. At the next roundabout, by the Petrol Station, take the second exit, still on Thorpe Lea Road. 8 At the next roundabout turn left onto Thorpe Lea Road (B388) and follow this for 2400m to the next roundabout where you take the fi rst exit into Green Road (later becomes Village Road). Continue to The Red Lion PH on the left and here turn right into Coldharbour Lane. 9 Look out for St. Mary’s Medieval Church on the right (worth a visit) and at the roundabout just afterwards continue ahead through the width restriction. At the next roundabout take the fi rst exit (Norlands Lane) and continue to Chertsey Lane. Take the crossing to the cycle way opposite and turn right to the roundabout at the Thorpe Park entrance. 10 Here you have the option of continuing on Chertsey Lane (if recent rain) or taking the quieter route passing Laleham Golf Club. For the latter option, turn left into Mixnams Lane and continue to the roundabout in Penton Park (pass the Marina entrance) where you turn left towards Laleham Reach. Continue and enter the golf club, ignoring turnings to the left. At the golf club turn towards the river. Alternative to 10 and 11: Continue along the A320 Chertsey Lane/Staines Rd for 1km, passing over the M3 and then take the next left down St. Ann’s Rd. At Abbeyfi elds Recreation Ground continue to follow St Ann’s as it turns sharp right (becoming Staines Lane) and shortly after turn left into Colonel’s Lane. After 150m you will reach the junction with Abbey Green. Turn right and continue with instruction 12. 11 Continue with the river on your left along the unmade road for 120m until it bends left where you take the bridleway going straight ahead. Continue along this bridleway (which can be muddy) with the golf course on your right for 750m to reach the road serving Chertsey Water Works. Continue straight on and 100m later take the right fork to go up over the motorway bridge. Cross the Abbey River and look out for the dovecot on the left! 12 Pass the gateway and continue on Ferry Lane, to cross ahead to Abbey Green. Fork left and soon turn right (with care) after the cottage on the right (Manor Farm Cottages). Follow the footpath to meet Willow Walk, which you then follow to Bridge Road. 13 Turn left on Bridge Road and continue to Chertsey Bridge. Cross the bridge and immediately turn left on Thames Side, with The Kingfi sher PH on your right. Pass Chertsey Lock and continue with the Thames on your left for 2600m, initially on road but later on the unmade towpath, (marked Thames Path) ignoring the right turn at the local shops. 14 When the unmade towpath becomes road again, turn right on Beech Tree Lane. At the end turn left onto Staines Road and continue back to the Notcutts Garden Centre entrance.
