The practice was setup in 2011 by Chris Pike, a Conservation Accredited and Chartered Structural Engineer with over 38 years experience within the sector. The business has recently grown to expand its service offering to include geotechnical, flood risk and drainage engineering services.

HANNEL FARM Grade II listed

2019 On behalf of PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY

CPA undertook a survey of a 15th century rural farmhouse located within the Peak District National Park.

The Cruck frame building has severe structural deficiencies, including bowed walls and an external hole within one of the chimney breasts.

CPA provided recommendations for urgent repair stabilisation so that the property owner can overtime restore the building into a safe, habitable state. HOLYHEAD MARKET HALL Grade II listed

2011-2017 On behalf of ISLE OF ANGLESEY COUNTY COUNCIL Lead Architect: Purcell

Holyhead Market Hall had fallen into significant disrepair as a result of long term neglect. CPA undertook a structural condition appraisal and provided recommendations for urgent stabilisation and repair works.

CPA also provided Expert Witness advice as part of a Public Inquiry regarding the local authorities application for a Compulsory Purchase Order to obtain the building. CPA were engaged as part of the design team to develop and promote regeneration of the Market Hall.

TUTBURY CASTLE Scheduled Monument

2017– 2020 (ongoing) On behalf of THE OF LANCASTER Agent: Savills

CPA were engaged to investigate a number of structural issues at , near Burton-on- Trent. These included investigation of cracking and movement of the North Tower spiral stone staircase and subsidence and instability of the Victorian entrance porch. A specialist laser scan survey has been commissioned to assist monitoring of movement in the north tower.

CPA have also reviewed and provided recommendations for drainage improvements to reduce further future subsidence.

IRONBRIDGE CORACLE HUT Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site

2015-2018 On behalf of IRONBRIDGE CORACLE TRUST

The Coracle Hut is a simple iron sheeted timber shed perched on the side of the within the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. The shed was the former workshop of Eustace Rogers, the last working coracle builder located on this part of the Severn.

CPA provided a structural and fabric condition report and set out a framework for undertaking urgent priority repair works . CPA provided outline budget costs for development of a conservation management plan to support a HLF bid application for funding.

WHITTON COURT Grade I listed

2019 - 2020 (ongoing) On behalf of Private Client Lead Architect: Hawkes Edwards

CPA have been engaged by Hawkes Edwards to assist with the renovation and restoration of Whitton Court, near , Shropshire.

CPA are assisting with the assessment of the historic building fabric throughout the renovation work as well as the design of foundations for the new build elements, which include a partially subterranean garage and two garden pavilions.

COLEHURST MANOR FARM BARN

2019 On behalf of Private Client Lead Architect: The Ellerdine Partnership

CPA assisted with the design and structural repair works of this residential barn conversion project in north Shropshire.

CPA undertook a structural survey and worked closely with the architect to develop a satisfactory residential layout that worked alongside the necessary repairs.

CPA also undertook the design of the surface water drainage which included percolation testing and soakaway design to meet building regulations.

NATIONAL TRUST BARNS

2019 - 2020 (ongoing) On behalf of THE NATIONAL TRUST

CPA were engaged by the National Trust (NT) to assist with the structural assessment of 17 barns located across 4 NT estates in Shropshire, Herefordshire and .

The proposals are to convert the barns into new residential and holiday let properties.

The old redundant barns have varied construction and underlying geological conditions making the structural design works unique at each location.

MAXSTOKE PRIORY Scheduled Ancient Monument

2018 –2019 On behalf of HISTORIC

CPA were commissioned by Historic England to coordinate a close survey and arrange investigations to determine the causes of instability and accelerated decay in the free standing wall ruins.

A report was prepared with recommendations for local repair along with an ongoing management plan to control invasive vegetation.

ANSTICE MEMORIAL HALL PORCH Grade II listed

2018-2019 On behalf of MADELEY TOWN COUNCIL

CPA were instructed to assess the porch structure of the 19th century Anstice Memorial Hall to determine any structural remedial works that may be necessary as part of wider renovation and restoration works at the site.

CPA provided detailed specifications for the replacement masonry work and undertook numerous visits throughout the works to ensure completion to the required standard.

CHURCHILL FORGE Scheduled Monument

2019 - 2020 (ongoing) On behalf of HISTORIC ENGLAND

The spillway at Churchill Forge requires urgent remedial works to prevent failure of the retaining structure.

The structural integrity of the earth dam is questionable following a collapse on the downstream face, and intrusion of a large tree stump.

CPA have prepared a specification for urgent remedial works to provide short term support to the structure prior to further funding being secured.

ELVASTON CASTLE Grade II listed

2017- 2020 (ongoing) On behalf of COUNTY COUNCIL

CPA have been working alongside Derbyshire County Council since 2017 regarding the restoration and repair of the gatehouse and clock tower at Elvaston Castle.

CPA have also assisted with the restoration and repair of other elements within the country park including a Victorian Grotto and the Courtyard archway.

PARK STREET CHAPEL, BLANAEVON

2019 On behalf of HERITAGE FUNERAL SERVICE

CPA were instructed to undertake a structural condition survey of Park Street Methodist Chapel to identify any structural defects that may require remedial actions prior to a proposed change of use to a funeral parlour.

The assessment found a number of drainage issues needed addressing in the areas external to the building.

25-37 FARM ROAD, STREET

2019 On behalf of STREET PROPERTIES LLP Architect: Peter Goolden Designs

CPA undertook an assessment of the roof structures of these early 20th century workers houses, originally built for the Clarks shoe industry based in Street, Somerset.

The roof trusses have been modified on a number of occasions and it was apparent that additional trusses installed at a later date were not providing any extra structural support.

OLD COURT HOUSE, MOLD Grade II listed

2019 On behalf of FLINTSHIRE COUNCIL

CPA undertook a structural condition survey of this former Court House in Mold. The Court House was the focal point of the Mold Riots in 1869.

The structure has been disused for a number of years and the Council are now seeking to undertake renovation works to provide new commercial premises.

The survey found that the external fabric of the building remains in an acceptable condition.

BUCKS HEAD FARM, WEEFORD

2019 On behalf of HIGH SPEED 2 Agent: Savills

CPA were requested to undertake a structural condition survey of a number of farm buildings that make up the 17th Century Bucks Head Farm, situated along the old A5 near Lichfield.

The proposed HS2 railway will run immediately adjacent to the buildings in a deep cutting and it was therefore necessary to determine the structural stability of these buildings prior to construction and operation.

The survey found a number of defective elements and recommendations for priority repairs were provided.

SUNNYCROFT HALLIDAY CONSERVATORY Grade II listed

2019 On behalf of THE NATIONAL TRUST Architect: Bradshaw Gass & Hope LLP

CPA assisted the lead architect in an assessment of structural defects, identifying causes and mitigation.

A bespoke engineering repair strategy was prepared detailing local underpinning and piecemeal repair of the delicate iron, timber and glass roof frame.

DRAYTON MILL COURT Grade II listed

2019 On behalf of DRAYTON MILL LTD Agent: HLM Property

CPA were requested to inspect two balconies which serve a number of properties of a residential development in . The balconies comprises a steel frame, with timber decking and glass panel perimeter fencing.

The survey determined that repairs to a number of elements are necessary before they could be considered safe for use by the residents, and set out a future inspection and maintenance schedule to ensure the condition does not deteriorate.

KNIGHTLEY GRANGE

2019 On behalf of NORBURY PARK

CPA were instructed to undertake an assessment of the Knightley Grange manor house within the Norbury Park estate, , to assess the implications of proposed demolition and redevelopment proposals.

The assessment focused on cellar areas that were proposed to be retained, and become new areas of driveway. Loading assessments of the cellar roof arches were completed to ensure they can withstand future traffic loading.

THE RODD Grade II* listed

2017 - 2020 (ongoing) On behalf of THE SIDNEY NOLAN TRUST

CPA undertook a general condition survey of this Grade II* listed manor house. The aged timber, masonry structure and external fabric was surveyed and the majority of structural defects were determined to be directly or indirectly cased from water penetration in areas such as chimney flashings, upstand abutments and faulty gutters.

Outline recommendations for priority repairs were made to protect and safeguard the building. Works are continuing into 2020 with architects Brownhill Hayward Brown, to develop a scheme for sensitive adaption.

CROWSNEST, SNAILBEACH

2019 On behalf of JAMES KEATES ARCHITECTURE

CPA were instructed to assist in discharging planning conditions relating to contaminated land for a proposed residential development near Snailbeach, Shropshire.

The site lies within a historic lead mining area and it was therefore necessary to assess the soils chemical composition to determine what remedial measures are required to ensure future users of the site are safe.

An intrusive ground investigation was undertaken and soil samples sent for chemical analysis. The tests found that there were elevated levels of Lead present at the site. A report was prepared outlining the findings of the testing and setting out a number of remedial measures, including importing new topsoil into soft landscaped areas.

COURT FARM, LITTLE DEWCHURCH

2019 On behalf of Private Client

CPA were instructed to investigate the cause of drainage issues at a residential property in rural Herefordshire. Water had begun emerging from the ground in the sloping rear garden, causing waterlogging and rendering large parts of the garden areas unusable.

CPA undertook a walkover survey to understand the site context and local drainage regime and to identify the potential causes of the issue. CPA set out a range of management options that could be implemented, with a focus on soft landscaping measures, ensuring alterations could easily be made should the origin or severity of the problem change.

4-5 DRYTON, WROXETER

2019 On behalf of RABY ESTATES Architect: NWD Architects

Raby Estates are proposing to redevelop one of their residential properties within their Shropshire estate.

Surface water from the existing property currently drains to a small brook immediately adjacent to the site, however, as part of the redevelopment works, the Local Planning Authority requested that infiltration testing was undertaken to determine whether the run-off rate could be reduced as part of the proposals.

Infiltration testing was undertaken at 2 pits within the site to BRE 365 standard. The testing found that the infiltration rate at the site was good, and therefore soakaways were sized and designed to manage surface water run-off from the development.

THE ROPE WALK, LYTH HILL

2019 On behalf of Private Client Architect: Ashley Davis Architects

CPA developed a surface water and foul water drainage scheme for the proposed residential conversion of a small historic rope workshop located at the summit of Lyth Hill, near Shrewsbury.

Given the sites’ remote location an infiltration drainage scheme was developed. CPA undertook all the design elements of the scheme including percolation tests, reporting and specifying the required soakaway and drainage field dimensions.
