ANDERSON, NISHIKORI MEET FOR VIENNA TITLE WITH IN SIGHT

• No. 2 seed and No. 5 seed will meet in the final of the Erste Bank Open 500 on Sunday, as they continue their quests to lock up singles spots at the Nitto ATP Finals. Anderson would qualify for London if he wins what would be the biggest title of his career. A title for Nishikori would move him to just 125 points outside of the No. 8 position in the Race to London.

• Anderson will try to earn the highest-level ATP World Tour singles title of his career, as his four singles championships have all come at ATP World Tour 250 events. This year’s Wimbledon finalist leads the field in aces this week (56) despite receiving a second-round walkover from wild card Jurgen Melzer and having an abbreviated quarter-final match after No. 6 seed Borna Coric retired during the second set. Anderson would clinch his Nitto ATP Finals debut with a win on Sunday.

• Nishikori, meanwhile, is searching for his first ATP World Tour singles title since winning at Memphis in 2016. The Japanese star’s title drought spans eight losses in finals, over 32 months and 48 tournament appearances. Nishikori leads the head-to-head against Anderson by 4 wins to 2, but South Africa’s Anderson claimed a narrow victory in their only meeting this year, which took place in the semi-finals of the en route to Anderson’s sole 2018 title to date.

• The doubles final has two teams who claimed semi-final defeats of the Top 2-seeded pairs. World No. 1 and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, playing only their second event together, made the final by beating Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic, who are No. 1 in the Race to London. Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski, also playing just their second event together, ousted Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, No. 3 in the Race to London, to make the final. Marach/Pavic and Kubot/Melo have already qualified for London; they will be joined there by Bryan, who qualified with .

LONDON HOPEFULS ANDERSON, NISHIKORI SEEK VIENNA FINAL

• No. 2 seed Kevin Anderson and No. 5 seed Kei Nishikori would boost their chances of qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals by winning semi-final matches at the Erste Bank Open 500 on Saturday. Anderson would qualify by capturing the Vienna title. Nishikori would inch within 125 points of the ATP Race to London cutoff if he wins his first title since 2016 Memphis on Sunday. First things first, Anderson faces and Nishikori meets in the semi-finals.

• Nishikori’s title drought spans eight losses in finals, 32+ months and 48 tournament appearances. The 11-time ATP champion will like his chances in Vienna with head-to-head records of 7-0 against Kukushkin, 5-2 against Verdasco and 4-2 against Anderson. Nishikori has won 12 straight sets from the qualifier Kukushkin. He enters Saturday’s match after dropping only four games each to World No. 19 in the second round and World No. 7 Dominic Thiem in the quarter- finals. Kukushkin, on the other hand, is coming off the longest match of the tournament, needing three hours and 19 minutes to eliminate Marton Fucsovics in a third-set tiebreaker on Friday.

• Anderson will also be hungry for a title with only four ATP World Tour 250 championships to his name. The World No. 8 and two-time Grand Slam finalist benefitted from a second-round walkover against wild card Jurgen Melzer and a quarter-final retirement from No. 6 seed Borna Coric. Verdasco also enjoyed an abbreviated victory in the quarter-finals when Gael Monfils retired. The former World No. 7 owns seven ATP World Tour titles, but none since 2016 Bucharest and only one at the ATP World Tour 500-level or higher. Verdasco’s biggest title came at Barcelona in 2010.

LONDON CONTENDERS THIEM, ISNER, NISHIKORI IN ACTION

• There are seven first round singles matches on Tuesday’s schedule with top seed and hometown favorite Dominic Thiem, No. 4 seed John Isner and No. 5 Kei Nishikori leading the way on Center Court. All three players are trying to secure one of the three remaining spots for the season- ending Nitto ATP Finals in London. Thiem, Isner and Nishikori are No. 8, 9 and 10 in the ATP Race to London. Thiem leads Isner by 515 points for the last spot and is ahead of Nishikori by 535 points.

• In the first match on Center Court, #NextGenATP American Frances Tiafoe and Nishikori meet for the first time. Both players are making their Vienna debut. Tiafoe, who is one of 13 players to win a first ATP World Tour title this season, is one of five players to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan. Nishikori has climbed from No. 39 in April to No. 11 this week in the ATP Rankings. His best result this season is a runner-up at ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo (l. to Nadal) and on home soil in Tokyo (l. to Medvedev).

• Next on is British lucky loser against Isner, who lost the only previous meeting in the quarter-finals in Lyon in May. That was also Norrie’s first career Top 10 win. Isner reached the semi-finals last week in Stockholm which enabled him to pass Nishikori for the No. 9 spot in the ATP Race to London. Next on is Thiem and Belgian qualifier , who are meeting for the first time. Thiem has a 6-7 record in Vienna with his best result a quarter-final in 2013. Bemelmans is making his third appearance in Vienna as a qualifier and his best showing was the quarter-finals, also in 2013. He is 0-7 lifetime against Top 10 opponents.

• In the last singles match on, 2011 champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga brings a 4-3 head-to-head lead against American Sam Querrey, who won the past two meetings last year. Tsonga, who is 15-4 in Vienna, reached the final the past two years. He underwent left knee surgery on April 3 and he missed seven-plus months before returning at Metz last month. He fell out of the Top 100 this week at No. 113 in the ATP Rankings for the first time since July 2, 2007 at No. 110. Querrey is making his second straight visit to Vienna after losing in the first round last year. His best result of the season was a runner-up at the inaugural New York Open in February (l. to Anderson).

• On the Next Gen Court, there are three matches, with Fernando Verdasco leading off against French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Verdasco won both previous meetings last year at ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells and Roland Garros. In the next match on, German No. 2 Philipp Kohlschreiber meets reigning Vienna champion Lucas Pouille for the third time (tied 1-1). In the final match on, No. 7 seed Fabio Fognini takes a 2-1 head-to-head advantage against Damir Dzumhur, who won the last meeting in the 2017 St. Petersburg final. Both of Fognini’s wins came on clay in Umag in 2015-16.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN VIENNA

1) Final 500 Tourney: The last of 13 ATP World Tour 500 tournaments take place this week in Vienna and Basel, where valuable ATP Ranking points are at stake for the ATP Race to London and Milan. The Nitto ATP Finals qualification cut-off is Nov. 5 and the Next Gen ATP Finals cut-off is Oct. 29.

3) Thiem Top Seed: Austrian star Dominic Thiem is the No. 1 seed in his hometown tournament for the first time. Thiem, who is 6-7 in Vienna with his best result the QF in 2013, is hoping to enjoy the success of top seeds since 2010. Since then, five of the past eight champions were top seeds. Thiem is 48-16 on the season with three titles (Buenos Aires, Lyon, St. Petersburg).

4) Reigning Champion: Unseeded Lucas Pouille is the top Frenchman at No. 23 in the ATP Rankings. Pouille won last year’s title over his countryman Tsonga. He is 1-2 in finals this season, winning his fifth career ATP title in Montpellier and finishing runner-up in Marseille and Dubai.

5) Former Champs: Besides Pouille, there are two other former champions in the draw: wild card Jurgen Melzer, who is the last Austrian titleholder in 2010 (also 2009) and 2011 winner Jo- Wilfried Tsonga, who also reached the final the past two years.

6) Next Gen Contender: Wild card Felix Auger-Aliassime is trying to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals. The 18-year-old Canadian is the youngest player in the draw and he is No. 12 in the Race to Milan with a 24-13 record and two ATP Challenger titles. He is 6-9 on the ATP Tour. Frances Tiafoe, who is No. 5 in the Race to Milan, has already qualified. He is making his Vienna debut.

7) Edmund Eyes Title: No. 8 seed Kyle Edmund, who reached the semi-finals in Vienna last year, just won his first ATP World Tour singles title at Antwerp on Sunday. The British No. 1 was contesting the second final of his career.

8) Monfils Returns: Special exempt Gael Monfils, who lost to Edmund in the Antwerp final, is making his first appearance in Vienna since 2015 when he reached the semi-finals. He reached the final in his Vienna debut in 2008 (l. to Petzschner). Monfils opened the season by winning the Doha title.

9) Basilashvili on the Rise: Nikoloz Basilashvili, who has won 500-level titles at Hamburg (as a Q) and Beijing, has jumped from No. 59 last year to a career-high No. 23 in the ATP Rankings.

10) Doubles Race: The Top 4 teams in the ATP Doubles Team Rankings have already qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals in London and they are the Top 4 seeds in Vienna: Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic, No. 2 Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo, the 2015-16 champions, No. 3 Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, and No. 4 and Bruno Soares.
