Intersect, Vol 14, No 2 (2021) Creating Boundaries in the Sperm Donation Industry: A Study of Bioethical Qualifiers in the Donation of Human Sperm Tanvee Sinha1 1 The University of Alabama at Birmingham While sperm donation has become a common and effective practice amongst many who suffer from the inability to conceive naturally, the practice's bioethical implications may reveal a necessity to place qualifying constrictions on the practice. Some examples of related ethical issues range from psychological impacts on offspring as a result of partial genetic dissociation from parents, and discriminatory practices, such as “shopping” for traits or narrow descriptions of optimal sperm donors. Regulations for eligible donors vary in different regions, while keeping some sort of uniformity through criteria, including height, weight, education, and lifestyle choices. This piece highlights some of the major cultural differences between China and the USA in regard to the regulation of sperm donation. Recently in China, after the “one- child only” policy was lifted, there is an increasing demand for sperm donors now than ever, but with new policies, it is even more difficult to donate and purchase sperm. Due to donors not being able to qualify for the “amount of patriotism” needed, there is an increased use of underground operations, such as the black market. These operations are often unsafe and have no regulation, encouraged by donors and middlemen solely seeking monetary value. Spontaneous Erection and Masturbation in Equids Sue M. McDonnell, Ph.D.* INTRODUCTION Spontaneous erection accompanied by an activity thought to be and referred to as masturbation occurs in stallions. Spontaneous erection involves extension of the penis from the prepuce with engorgement to its full length and rigidity, in a solitary, rather than heterosexual, context. The activity known as masturbation involves rhyth- mic bouncing, pressing, or sliding of the erect penis against the abdomen achieved by rhythmic contraction of the ischiocavernosus muscles and/or pelvic thrusting (Fig. 1). With such stimulation, the glans penis usually enlarges as during copulation, and pre- sperm fluid may drip from the urethra. This behavior in horses seems analogous to spontaneous erection and masturbation noted in several other mammalian species. I-’ The significance of spontaneous erection and masturbation in horses, as in other species, is not well understood. Traditional views of spontaneous erection and mas- turbation in domestic horses follow those held for similar behavior observed in other domestic and captive wild animals. One theme is that these are aberrant behaviors, similar to other stable vices, resulting from regimentation or restricted activity of cap- tive or domesticexistence. 4-6Another theme is that spontaneous erection and mastur- bation represent an expression or “venting” of sexual frustration resulting either from inherent hypersexuality or from thwarted access to heterosexual activity. 6v7Further, it has been asserted that masturbation limits the potential fertility of an individual stal- lion by depleting semen reserves and sexual energy. Accordingly, spontaneous erec- tion and masturbation in horses are often discouraged. An array of management schemes and devices such as stallion rings, brushes, and cages have been employed to inhibit spontaneous erection and disrupt masturbation.8 Attempts to inhibit sponta- neous erection and masturbation involve considerable management effort as well as risk of genital injury to the horse. -

INTRAUTERINE INSEMINATION OF HUSBAND'S SEMEN B. N. BARWIN Departments of Physiology and Midwifery & Gynaecology, The Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland (Received 11 th January 1973) Summary. Fifty patients with primary infertility were treated by intra- uterine insemination of the husband's semen which had been stored. Thirty patients had sperm counts of greater than 20 \m=x\106/ml with 50% motility and twenty patients had oligospermia (<20 \m=x\106/ml). The technique of storage of semen is reported and the intrauterine method described. The r\l=o^\leof the buffer solution is discussed in over- coming the complications of intrauterine insemination. A success rate of 70% is reported in the normospermic group and 55% in the oligo- spermic group over nine cycles of intrauterine insemination of husband's semen. INTRODUCTION One of the main problems confronting the gynaecologist in the investigation of infertility is the consistent finding of immotile spermatozoa, spermatozoa of low motility and low sperm count in the cervical mucus or semen (Scott, 1968). There was considerable controversy among earlier workers in the field that the sperm count was substandard if it fell below 60 106/ml but MacLeod (1962) has carried out considerable research in this field and it is now generally accepted that true oligospermia is represented by counts of less than 20 IO6/ ml provided the motility is good. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Selection of cases Fifty couples with primary infertility of between 3 and 14 years' duration were selected. The age distribution was between 24 and 41 years. In all cases, the wives had been subjected to a full clinical investigation. -

The goal of this study was to explore the (1) age at initiation and frequency of masturbation, (2) associations of masturbation with diverse variables, (3) reported reasons for masturbating and associated emotions, and (4) the relationship between frequency of masturbation and different sexual behavioral factors. A total of 3,687 women completed a web-based survey of previously pilot-tested items. The results reveal a high reported incidence of masturbation practices amongst this convenience sample of women. Ninety one percent of women, in this sample, indicated that they had masturbated at some point in their lives with 29.3% reporting having masturbated within the previous month. Masturbation behavior appears to be related to a greater sexual repertoire, more sexual fantasies, and greater reported ease in reaching sexual arousal and orgasm. Women reported a diversity of reasons for masturbation, as well as a variety of direct and indirect techniques. A minority of women reported feeling shame and guilt associated with masturbation. Early masturbation experience might be beneficial to sexual arousal and orgasm in adulthood. Further, this study demonstrates that masturbation is a positive component in the structuring of female sexuality. -

For Semen analysis or cryopreservation Semen Collection Instruction and Requisition Form 1. Semen Analysis appointments are at the USF Health South Tampa Campus (2 Tampa General Circle, 4th floor, Tampa, FL 33606) from 9:50 to 11:10 am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. 2. To book an appointment call 813-259-0692 for scheduling (press 2). Please let the scheduler know if you will be dropping off or collecting your specimen at our facility when you book the appointment. MUST PROVIDE PHOTO ID AT TIME OF VISIT. 3. You need to refrain from ejaculation by either intercourse or masturbation for 2-5 days prior to the collection. Shorter or longer periods of abstinence may cause abnormal results. 4. If you collect the semen at home, time from collection to dropping off should be no more than 60 minutes. 5. If you do not have insurance coverage, the charge for the semen analysis is $100. Payment is due at the time of dropping off. Patients with insurance will have this test submitted by our Financial Specialist to their insurance carrier. 6. We recommend booking at least two weeks in advance. 7. Results will be obtained with your next Physician appointment Please use following instructions to collect your semen sample: 1. Complete the information below. 2. Wash hands with alcohol wipes. 3. FOUR REGULATING EGG DONATION: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN THE UNITED STATES AND UNITED KINGDOM Michelle Sargent While rapid scientific development of egg donation technology has made it possible to elude infertility and to expand options for means of procreation, it has also thrust policy makers advanced societies in the midst of a raging debate that involves several ethical concerns. This paper describes and contrasts the respective regulatory approaches of the United States and the United Kingdom towards egg donation, and explores their potential implications for policy making in both countries. Michelle Sargent is currently pursuing her masters at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, with a concentration in energy, climate change, and environmental policy. Prior to returning to school to pursue her masters, Ms. Sargent worked at an environmental consulting firm on several different projects, including a new business model to reduce chemical usage and hazardous waste in chemical manufacturing firms, and a philanthropic collaborative to promote sustainable food systems in California. She also coordinated grant administration to small Latino nonprofits with a foundation affinity group. Ms. Sargent was named a Morris K. The Oedipus Hex: Regulating Family After Marriage Equality ∗ Courtney Megan Cahill Now that national marriage equality for same-sex couples has become the law of the land, commentators are turning their attention from the relationships into which some gays and lesbians enter to the mechanisms on which they — and many others — rely in order to reproduce. Even as one culture war makes way for another, however, there is something that binds them: a desire to establish the family. This Article focuses on a problematic manifestation of that desire: the incest prevention justification. The incest prevention justification posits that the law ought to regulate alternative reproduction in order to minimize the potential for accidental incest between individuals involved in the donor conception process. A leading argument offered by both conservatives and progressives in defense of greater regulation of alternative reproduction, the incest prevention justification hearkens back in troubling ways to a taboo long used in American law to discipline the family.
