By examining fictionalized autoethnographies—narratives wherein the author writes to represent his or her own ethnic group as a collective identity in crisis—this dissertation interrogates audiences‘ responses and authors‘ impetus for reading and producing novels that testify to experiences of cultural trauma. The first chapter synthesizes some critical strategies specific to autoethnographic fiction; the final three chapters posit a series of textual applications of those strategies. Each textual application demonstrates that outsider readers and critics can treat testimonial literatures with respect and compassion while still analyzing them critically. In the second chapter, an explication of the representations of African American women‘s experiences with the cultural trauma of slavery is brought to bear upon analyses of Toni Morrison‘s A Mercy (2009) and Alice Walker‘s Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart (2003).

Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections Northwestern University Libraries Dublin Gate Theatre Archive The Dublin Gate Theatre Archive, 1928 - 1979 History: The Dublin Gate Theatre was founded by Hilton Edwards (1903-1982) and Micheál MacLiammóir (1899-1978), two Englishmen who had met touring in Ireland with Anew McMaster's acting company. Edwards was a singer and established Shakespearian actor, and MacLiammóir, actually born Alfred Michael Willmore, had been a noted child actor, then a graphic artist, student of Gaelic, and enthusiast of Celtic culture. Taking their company’s name from Peter Godfrey’s Gate Theatre Studio in London, the young actors' goal was to produce and re-interpret world drama in Dublin, classic and contemporary, providing a new kind of theatre in addition to the established Abbey and its purely Irish plays. Beginning in 1928 in the Peacock Theatre for two seasons, and then in the theatre of the eighteenth century Rotunda Buildings, the two founders, with Edwards as actor, producer and lighting expert, and MacLiammóir as star, costume and scenery designer, along with their supporting board of directors, gave Dublin, and other cities when touring, a long and eclectic list of plays. The Dublin Gate Theatre produced, with their imaginative and innovative style, over 400 different works from Sophocles, Shakespeare, Congreve, Chekhov, Ibsen, O’Neill, Wilde, Shaw, Yeats and many others. They also introduced plays from younger Irish playwrights such as Denis Johnston, Mary Manning, Maura Laverty, Brian Friel, Fr. Desmond Forristal and Micheál MacLiammóir himself. Until his death early in 1978, the year of the Gate’s 50th Anniversary, MacLiammóir wrote, as well as acted and designed for the Gate, plays, revues and three one-man shows, and translated and adapted those of other authors.

The Tenth Book of Ovid's Metamorphoses As Orpheus
THE TENTH BOOK OF Ovid’s METAMORPHOSES AS Orpheus’ EPYLLION* Ulrich Eigler By picking up the topic of the Orpheus story in his tenth Book, Ovid seeks the competition with Virgil, who treated the Orpheus myth (Verg. Georg. 4.453–527) within the Aristaeus narrative in the fourth Book of the Geor gics (315–588). In both cases the story constitutes an insertion of its own quality within the greater narrative frame, which in the former case rep- resents Virgil’s didactic poem on agriculture and in the latter case the collective poems on transformations.1 In Virgil’s version, the Orpheus story is part of the frame of the Aristaeus narrative as a second narrative string, whereas in Ovid’s version the Orpheus story constitutes a complex on its own, which again has a number of insertions. Therefore, one was speaking of an Aristaeus and congruously of an Orpheus epyllion.2 This term was chosen because, contrary to the greater poem, the connexion was not given and for the Aristaeus and for the Orpheus episode applies what Koster termed as stimulus for the postulation of the epyllion as a Kleingattung: “Das auffallendste . ist die sogenannte Einlage und dass sie in einem so deutlichen Missverhältnis zur Haupterzählung steht, dass sie gewissermassen zur Hauptsache wird.”3 Analogical observations can be made regarding the Orpheus narrative. Into the frame narrative, which is dedicated to Orpheus (Met. 10.1–85; 11.37–66), the staging of an overlong song by Orpheus is inserted; it appears like a foreign body. The Sun Also Rises A Book Catalogue from Capitol Hill Books and Riverby Books January 27, 2017 On Hemingway, the Lost Generation, Cocktails, and Bullfighting This winter, Shakespeare Theater Company will perform The Select, a play based on Ernest Hemingway’s iconic novel The Sun Also Rises. To kick off the performance, Capitol Hill Books and Riverby Books have joined forces to assemble a collection of books and other materials related to Hemingway and the “Lost Generation.” Our catalog includes various editions (rare, medium rare, and reading copies) of all of Hemingway’s major works, and many associated materials. For instance, we have a program from a 1925 bullfight in Barcelona, vintage cocktail books, a two volume Exotic Cooking and Drinking Book, and an array of books from Hemingway’s peers and mentors. On Jan. 27th, the Pen Faulkner Foundation, the Shakespeare Theater Company, and the Hill Center are hosting an evening retrospective of Hemingway’s writing. Throughout the evening, actors, scholars, and writers will read, praise, and excoriate Hemingway. Meanwhile mixologists will sling drinks with a Hemingway theme, and we will be there to discuss Gertrude Stein, bullfighting, Death in the Gulfstream, and to talk and sell books. All of the materials in this catalog will be for sale there, and both Riverby and Capitol Hill Books will have displays at our stores set up throughout the month of February. On July 8, 1918 he was severely wounded in the knee in Italy. He recovered in time and remained with the Italian army until the end of the war. His war experience proved so shattering and nightmarish that his life and writings were permanently affected. In a sense, through all his life, he lived under the influence, and continued to write about it in order to relive it and forget about it. Back to the United States, He stayed for a time in North Michigan, reading, writing, and fishing.
