2.6 Innovative processes adopted by the institution in Teaching and Learning:

The use of Power-Point and Audio-Visual presentations was further encouraged, and these are now regularly utilised by faculty and students. Such presentations enrich and extend the understanding of curriculum beyond the syllabus. Hands-on workshops were further organized to understand nuances and technicalities of film making. Some departments have created Google groups/other online study groups in order to share resources and enhance pedagogical engagements.

The college regularly organized trips and excursions related to course work. The Principal particularly encouraged the Departments and co-curicular societies to organise field visits, heritage walks and mindfulness workshops for students to develop a real time understanding of syllabi related topics. For example, a national seminar on 'Democracy and Rights Discourse in India: Norms, Institutions and Practices' was organized by Political science department in order to engage with contemporary political scenario and real-world issues

Departments worked at identifying students who needed academic assistance, and some departments organized remedial classes as well as held counselling sessions for students in need of these. Many departments tried and facilitated book banks and circulation of study material so that not so privileged students may avail those resources.

In an effort to extend pedagogical understanding of issues, regular lectures by eminent subject experts in their respective fields were organized by almost all the Departments for students to become informed about emerging issues and research trends in their discipline. For instance, a workshop on 'Training Teachers for Community Engagement' in collaboration with 'Teach for India' was organized by the department of English, to enable and empower teachers and students who have an interest in coummunity out reach activities. Following the

stream, organised a panel discussion on The Women Development Centre ‘Online Safety for Women (Digital Trust Dialogues)’ sponsored by ‘Google and ShethePeople’. The ‘Charkah Utsav’ organised by Gandhi Study Circle was a novel way of understanding philosophy of Gandhi through learning the use of Charkah. The Green Beans and the faculty members from Environmental Sciences have been consistently making efforts for novel ways of generating environmental consciousness.

2.7 Total No. of actual teaching days during this academic year: 180

2.8 Examination/ Evaluation Reforms initiated by the Institution (for example: Open Book Examination, Bar Coding, Double Valuation, Photocopy, Online Multiple-Choice Questions).

Being a constituent college of University of Delhi, we are governed by rules and regulations. All norms are set by them for the end semester exam. Therefore, question papers are centrally set, and answer booklets are also centrally evaluated. However, for the internal assessment process, the college has sought to make the students more involved in their own learning through internal exams, presentations and projects. Apart from written assignments, class tests, individual and group presentations, students are also encouraged to participate and suggest ways of assessment through feed-back procedure within the departments. Students’ feedback has helped teachers to make their lectures more participatory through multiple methods of student engagement, apart from classroom teaching. MCQs and open books tests are also facilitated amongst many departments. This helps test conceptual understanding rather than rote learning; it also helps alleviate stress levels amongst students. To further engage and empower students, peer and self-assessment is encouraged and this has been happening regularly post NAAC accreditation. The library services are made simpler for the students to use it extensively pre and post their classes. Few students running short of attendance are encouraged and counselled on regular basis to attend the classes for better academic performance in the examination. This has helped in betterment of results.

2.9 No. of faculty members involved in curriculum restructuring/revision/syllabus development as member of Board of Study/Faculty/Curriculum Development workshop: 29

7.3 Give two Best Practices of the institution:

A) Environemtnal Consciousness and Waste Managament Drive Introduction: Improving environmental conditions on campus is an important goal of Kamala Nehru College. It took a unique effort for reviving and improving the already existing waste management through involvement of students, teachers and non-teaching staff through various projects and activities that were palnned in the academic year 2017-18. The Department of Environmental Science took a lead in this to achieve the goal of “clean, beautiful and environment friendly campus” as part of its social and environmental initiative and responsibility.

Objective: It was observed that solid waste management was turning into a serious environmental and social concern on campus. Waste was not separated but often dumped at college dumping area resulting into contamination of soil, air and surrounding areas. This area also acted as a breeding ground for mosquito and pathogenic bacteria. Improving waste management was the main goal and accordingly a baseline survey was conducted to know the intensity of the issues and the strategies to solve the problem. On the basis of data, it was estimated that 80%-90% of the waste was degradable. But the waste was mixed with non- biodegradable waste like broken glass, sand, stones, wood, and plastic resulting into hazardous conditions at dumping area.

Action Plan and Success: Interactive sessions with college administration, students, teachers, non-teaching staff and residents of the college were held for several times to highlight the negative impact of waste on the environment and on people's health. Based on these deliberations, it was decided to develop better infrastructure so that the problem of waste management can be solved in long term. Accordingly, the piled-up waste was removed and compost pits were prepared. The removed waste was then segregated for various components like glass, wood, textile, plastic, stone etc. In the meetings with housekeeping staff, it was decided to segregate the waste as biodegradable and nonbiodegradable and they were advised to only dump biodegradable waste in the compost pits. Since most of the waste in college is non-biodegradable (green

waste, food waste etc.) now it is becoming easy to convert the waste into compost. Most of the compost is now being utilized for regular manure need of the garden activities. Almost 80-90% of our waste is utilized and converted into a resource. This is the success of college administration, students, teachers and all stakeholders. The team working towards this believes that it is not only our responsibility but a right to convert waste into resource/s for college.

B) Gandhi Study Circle

Introduction: The Gandhi Study Circle of Kamala Nehru College aims to create awareness amongst students about the Gandhian philosophy. The Circle undertakes its activites that elicits the interest of students towards the subject in a more practical and creative style. The orientation of the Circle is towards hands on learning and awareness about the relevant issues of the society in the present times while analysing them from the Gandhian perspective.

Objective:

Despite the fact that Gandhi is taught as a part of the syllabi right from the schools, most of the students have a a clear understanding of the philosophy of Mahatma. It is for this reason that society convenors bring in an element of creativity to instil the interest in a more practical manner by organising and making students participate in workshops, games, study tours, youth confluences, community outreaches, poetry competition, drama competition and educational visits.

The sole objective is to bring out the value based philosophy not only as a theoretical subject but as a practical knowledge system that can support the students in their future growth as not only good human beings but also as valuable citizens. The idea is also to instil a sense of responsibility in them for community, society and the nation.

Success: Gandhi Study Circle has had a practice of registering students from cross disciplines. Taking the inspiration from the Gandhian philosophy, it intitaited a good practice of taking more societies on board during the events. They co-opted 8 societies in the last one year. This practice gave the students an opportunity within college, to work in a team and polish their skills of team management.

The student leaders of the society conceived, planned and managed the activities, themselves. Their enthusiastic involvement was witnessed in wide range of activities that were organised under the aegis of this society.‘Charkha Utsav’ and ‘Khadi Fashion Show’were well received by all and the two workshops organised on ‘Spinning Charkha’ and ‘Pottery Making’ had 300 student participants. The activity named as ‘Gandhi in Me’ was a platform for students to look for soultions using Gandhian ways. ‘Gandhi Vandan’ was to remember the greatness of

Bapu through songs and bhajans on the 30th of January 2018. ‘Gandhi Utsav’ as celebrated had a talk by the former Vice Chancellor of University of Delhi— Prof. Dinesh Singh who addressed the students on ‘Has Gandhi Failed?’ As a part of following the Gandhian system of cherishing the local and going into the roots of our tradtion, the students were re- introduced to the field/village games, Pitthu, Snakes and Ladders and Stapu. These games were introduced from the perpective of health issues of the youth of today which receives more of harm due to phone and internet games. “Natak Competition” organised by Gandhi Bhawan had participation from 15 colleges and the Gandhi Study Circle of Kamala Nehru College bagged a special prize for ‘Ek Katha Champaran ki’ At ‘Youth Confluence’ at Gandhi Samiti and Darshan Samiti, Rajghat, Delhi, seven students presented their projects on ‘Nonviolence in Communication’, ‘Nonviolence towards Animals’ and Poetry on ‘Gandhi”. The project, ‘Nonviolence in Communication’ was undertaken by students’ team of the Gandhi Study Circle under the guidance of the society convenor Dr. Neena Bansal. Through a Questionaire method, a survey within college was conducted about the usage of ‘abusive words’ by students within their lives and the students were made to understand that violence through words is the least that they can do to practice non-violence. The student members have expressed the desire to hold ‘Charkha’ workshop on regular basis and this shall be worked upon during 2018-19. The fact that the young minds feel inspired enough to learn spinning, speaks for itself about the success and popularity of Gandhi in society.

7.4 Contribution to environmental awareness / protection:

The Green Beans Society and Faculty of Environmental Sciences were actively involved in the environmental and cleanliness drive by making the students participate as well as take the responsibility of spreading the environemtnal consciousness in smaller groups—peer groups, societies and departmetns. Cleanliness Drive by the students of Green Beans Society was organised on regular basis. They conducted ‘Anti- Fire/Crackers’ campaign around Diwali to prevent Air Pollution as well took the initiative of plantation to check air pollution. The area around the New Seminar Room could see the effect of the this drive as it is aesthetically landscaped to give students a feel to be closer to nature with Bamboo classrooms all over.

The plants in the campus have been labelled with their scientific as well as common names to make students familiar about their benefits and account for the diversity of plants in the campus. The Disaster Management Plan for the College is being prepared by Geography students with the help of GPS and GIS techniques in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority to make the College building disaster resilient.

Feedback Report

Feedback process in Kamala Nehru College has been one of the consistent mechanisms to improve the working of the institution and to facilitate constant communication with the students, parents and alumnae regarding various aspects of academic, non-academic and infrastructural issues.

Students Feedback: Kamala Nehru College in order to foster accountability, undertook various rounds of informal feedbacks during the year 2017-18 wherein constant interactions were conducted with the Class Representatives, Student Convenors of Societies, Students Union Members and Groups of Students from each department of college. The feedback not only aimed at the overall assessment of the college and faculty but also self-assessment of the students through questions on regularity of classes, assignments, and participation in co-curricular and extra curricular activities, lab and library facilities, etc. The feedback report consisting of actions taken was prepared. Certain observations were made:

• Students would like to have the online feedback in 2018-19 and suggested that they too would like to give inputs regarding the questions to be incorporated in the questionnaire. • The response of the students regarding the assignment of hours for the practice sessions for the extra-curricular activites resulted in chalking of a systematic planout so that the students actively enagaged in the extra curricular societies are able to strike a balance between academics and practices/performances. • The need for Saturday as a break day was raised and the college decided to have five days as working days with Saturday as an off day for most departments. • The demand for newer facilities in the canteen was raised and the furniture and other facilites have been enhanced. • Bringing the B.A. Program students in the mainstream of college activites was appreciated by the students. The restructured B.A. Program committee has been working actively in the college. • Students expressed the need of having more interactive sessions with the outstation students who take admission in the college for giving them a platform to share their concerns as well as contribute in their unique ways for their institute. IQAC has decided for the larger participation of the students for the feedback process of the term 2018-19 so that more improvement can be made in the college from the perpective of students. IQAC is open to suggestions and looks forward to working towards improvement in academic and non-academic realms with continual improvement in the feedback process. It intends to incorporate issues related to outstation students, interdisciplinary curriculum, etc.

and views and aspirations of new as well as old batches of students for upkeep and efficient working of the institution, in the next feedback exercise.

Feedback Analysis of Parents: The college has consistently invited parents for receiving the inputs and feedback regarding the facilities provided to their wards. The parents have been generally satisfied with whatever the college has been offering and would want to have more of these meetings. The IQAC has decided to have two rounds of meetings with parents for the period of 2018-19—both as online feedback and formal personal meetings. The college has been inviting parents to the orientation day post NAAC grading and is working on restructuring the parents’ feedback process.

Feedback Analysis of the Alumnae: The Principal, members of Madhursmriti (Alumnae Association, KNC) along with IQAC team took the initiative to organize the meeting with the former students and the office bearers for the association were selected. The alumane lauded the effort of college to have got the alumane association registered now. It was suggested that alumnae should raise funds for the college as well make contributions for the wellbeing of their institute. The plan of holding an annual program in the year 2018-19 was chalked out. It was even suggested that the frequency of meetings should increase. Dr. Amrita Bajaj (former student), the Deputy Dean of Students Welfare, University of Delhi helped college arrange the ‘Open House Session’ prior to admissions in June 2018. She is even the president of the Alumnae Association of Kamala Nehru College.
