In making the transition to quantum mechanics, the variables p,q are represented by Hermitian operators P,Q which, satisfy the com- mutation rule PQ- Qp = 'y1 (1) where Y = h/2ri and 1 indicates the unit operator. From group theoretic considerations, Weyll has obtained the following general rule for carrying a function over from classical to quantum mechanics. Express f(p,q) as a Fourier integral, f(p,q) = f feiC(r+TQ) r(,r)d(rdT (2) (or in any other way as a linear combination of the functions eW(ffP+T)). Then the function F(P,Q) in quantum mechanics which corresponds to f(p,q) is given by F(P,Q)- ff ei(0P+7Q) t(cr,r)dodr. (3) It is the purpose of this note to obtain an explicit expression for F(P,Q), and although we confine our statements to the case in which f(p,q) is a polynomial, the results remain formally correct for infinite series. Any polynomial G(P,Q) may, by means of relation (1), be written in a form in which all of the Q-factors occur on the left in each term. This form of the function G(P,Q) will be denoted by GQ(P,Q). -

The Mean Value Theorem Math 120 Calculus I Fall 2015 The central theorem to much of differential calculus is the Mean Value Theorem, which we'll abbreviate MVT. It is the theoretical tool used to study the first and second derivatives. There is a nice logical sequence of connections here. It starts with the Extreme Value Theorem (EVT) that we looked at earlier when we studied the concept of continuity. It says that any function that is continuous on a closed interval takes on a maximum and a minimum value. A technical lemma. We begin our study with a technical lemma that allows us to relate 0 the derivative of a function at a point to values of the function nearby. Specifically, if f (x0) is positive, then for x nearby but smaller than x0 the values f(x) will be less than f(x0), but for x nearby but larger than x0, the values of f(x) will be larger than f(x0). This says something like f is an increasing function near x0, but not quite. An analogous statement 0 holds when f (x0) is negative. Proof. The proof of this lemma involves the definition of derivative and the definition of limits, but none of the proofs for the rest of the theorems here require that depth. 0 Suppose that f (x0) = p, some positive number. That means that f(x) − f(x ) lim 0 = p: x!x0 x − x0 f(x) − f(x0) So you can make arbitrarily close to p by taking x sufficiently close to x0. -

Kaufmann and Christopher Yeomans t is fair to say that Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s philosophy of Imathematics and his interpretation of the calculus in particular have not been popular topics of conversation since the early part of the twenti- eth century. Changes in mathematics in the late nineteenth century, the new set-theoretical approach to understanding its foundations, and the rise of a sympathetic philosophical logic have all conspired to give prior philosophies of mathematics (including Hegel’s) the untimely appear- ance of naïveté. The common view was expressed by Bertrand Russell: The great [mathematicians] of the seventeenth and eighteenth cen- turies were so much impressed by the results of their new methods that they did not trouble to examine their foundations. Although their arguments were fallacious, a special Providence saw to it that their conclusions were more or less true. Hegel fastened upon the obscuri- ties in the foundations of mathematics, turned them into dialectical contradictions, and resolved them by nonsensical syntheses. .The resulting puzzles [of mathematics] were all cleared up during the nine- teenth century, not by heroic philosophical doctrines such as that of Kant or that of Hegel, but by patient attention to detail (1956, 368–69). Recently, however, interest in Hegel’s discussion of calculus has been awakened by an unlikely source: Gilles Deleuze. In particular, work by Simon Duffy and Henry Somers-Hall has demonstrated how close Deleuze and Hegel are in their treatment of the calculus as compared with most other philosophers of mathematics. -

2.4 The Extreme Value Theorem and Some of its Consequences The Extreme Value Theorem deals with the question of when we can be sure that for a given function f , (1) the values f (x) don’t get too big or too small, (2) and f takes on both its absolute maximum value and absolute minimum value. Plotting, Derivatives, and Integrals for Teaching Calculus in R Daniel Kaplan, Cecylia Bocovich, & Randall Pruim July 3, 2012 The mosaic package provides a command notation in R designed to make it easier to teach and to learn introductory calculus, statistics, and modeling. The principle behind mosaic is that a notation can more effectively support learning when it draws clear connections between related concepts, when it is concise and consistent, and when it suppresses extraneous form. At the same time, the notation needs to mesh clearly with R, facilitating students' moving on from the basics to more advanced or individualized work with R. This document describes the calculus-related features of mosaic. As they have developed histori- cally, and for the main as they are taught today, calculus instruction has little or nothing to do with statistics. Calculus software is generally associated with computer algebra systems (CAS) such as Mathematica, which provide the ability to carry out the operations of differentiation, integration, and solving algebraic expressions. The mosaic package provides functions implementing he core operations of calculus | differen- tiation and integration | as well plotting, modeling, fitting, interpolating, smoothing, solving, etc. The notation is designed to emphasize the roles of different kinds of mathematical objects | vari- ables, functions, parameters, data | without unnecessarily turning one into another. For example, the derivative of a function in mosaic, as in mathematics, is itself a function. The result of fitting a functional form to data is similarly a function, not a set of numbers. Traditionally, the calculus curriculum has emphasized symbolic algorithms and rules (such as xn ! nxn−1 and sin(x) ! cos(x)). -

Thus it is appropriate to begin our study of calculus by investigating limits and their properties. The special type of limit that is used to find tangents and velocities gives rise to the central idea in differential calcu- lus, the derivative. We see how derivatives can be interpreted as rates of change in various situations and learn how the derivative of a function gives information about the original function. 89 57425_02_ch02_p089-099.qk 11/21/08 10:35 AM Page 90 90 CHAPTER 2 LIMITS AND DERIVATIVES 2.1 The Tangent and Velocity Problems In this section we see how limits arise when we attempt to find the tangent to a curve or the velocity of an object. The Tangent Problem The word tangent is derived from the Latin word tangens, which means “touching.” Thus t a tangent to a curve is a line that touches the curve. In other words, a tangent line should have the same direction as the curve at the point of contact. How can this idea be made precise? For a circle we could simply follow Euclid and say that a tangent is a line that intersects the circle once and only once, as in Figure 1(a). Take the derivative f ’(x) . 2. Find the critical points by setting f ’ equal to 0, and solving for x . To finish the job, use either the first derivative test or the second derivative test. Via First Derivative Test 3. Determine if f ’ is positive (so f is increasing) or negative (so f is decreasing) on both sides of each critical point. • Note that since all that matters is the sign, you can check any value on the side you want; so use values that make it easy! • Optional, but helpful in more complex situations: draw a sign diagram. For example, say we have critical points at 11/8 and 22/7. It’s usually easier to evaluate functions at integer values than non-integers, and it’s especially easy at 0. So, for a value to the left of 11/8, choose 0; for a value to the right of 11/8 and the left of 22/7, choose 2; and for a value to the right of 22/7, choose 4.
