INTRODUCTION A barren-ground caribourange evaluation of Southampton Island, conducted by the Canadian Wildlife Service, provided the opportunity to observe the birds on the island during the periods 2 June to 14 August 1970 and 1 July to 31 August 1971. The main camp in 1970 was on the Southampton Limestone Plains of the Hudson Bay Lowlands (Bird 1953) at Salmon Pond (64" 14' N., 85" 00' W.), although several trips were made in July, 15 miles northeast to the Precambrian highlands. -

Global economies are changing, new markets are growing, and international focus is shifting north – and we are poised to take full advantage of this incredible opportunity. Our vast natural resource base continues to provide the backbone to our territorial economy and provide opportunities to our residents. The NWT exports approximately $3 billion in diamonds and oil annually. However, signifi cant potential remains. Last year industry bid over $500 million in the Sahtu Region for land parcels that will be explored for oil potential. The rugged, pristine and isolated nature of the Northwest Territories is also a perfect fi t for the large and growing international tourism market – tourism contributes $100 million annually to our economy, and, like our resource industry, it is on the brink of tremendous growth. Our smaller industries are also capitalizing on the unique Northern setting. -

It’s believed that the current wolverine population on the central barrens is relatively healthy and serves as a refugia which supports the harvest of wolverines in adjacent areas.
