Latest Chapter News

We have some great news about chapters that have become reactivated and several that are working toward petitioning for Chi Epsilon membership. Chapter number 31 at New York University-Poly has had an initiation and installation of new officers, after be- ing inactive for many years. In addition, chapter number 103, at the University of South Florida has initiated new members and installed new officers for the first time recently. The new members of these chapters are part of the over 3,000 initiated for the 2010-2011 year. The great news is that several chapters are in the formative stages. These are lo- cated in California, Colorado, Florida, and Texas. We can expect at least a couple of these six local civil engineering societies to petition for membership within the coming year. Also, we have received our first inquiry from a foreign, ABET accredited, civil engineering group about forming a local society that could petition for membership in the coming years. So, one can certainly see that our society, Chi Epsilon, is growing and actively recognizing civil engineers with honor.

THE TRANSIT 10 spring 2011 42nd Chi Epsilon National Conclave Breaks New Ground

The upcoming 42nd bi-annual (even years) Chi Epsilon National Conclave, in a break from tradition, will be hosted not by one chapter, but by all thirteen chapters of the Pacific District on March 8-10, 2012. It will also be the first Conclave held west of the Rocky Mountains. All meetings and events will take place at the Hilton Los Ange- les Airport Hotel. Hilton provides free shuttle service to and from Los Angeles International Airport. Conclave activities will begin on Thurs- day, March 8th, with a welcome reception at 6:00 PM. District caucuses start at 7:30 PM followed by the first event of a newly created District Competition. There will be more district competition events on Friday and Saturday interspersed among the usual general sessions, committee meetings, tours, national honor member initiation, and meals. New conclave activities will be district exhibits, professional development workshops, a graduate school fair, and a combination engineering networking expo/vendor fair. Conclave registration, hotel reservations, and gathering of other pertinent infor- mation will be done online at the Chi Epsilon Pacific District Alumni website at www.xepdaa.com starting October 1, 2011. Representatives from Pacific District chapters will be contacting chapters in the other districts to serve as conclave liaisons. The Pacific District chapters are the Uni- versity of Southern California, UC Berkeley, University of Hawaii, San Diego State, Cal State Los Angeles, San Jose State, Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC Davis and Cal State Fresno. The district has had 24 district conferences since its first one in 1985. They are excited to be hosting and are busy preparing to make this 42nd Conclave one to remember. All alumni are invited to attend. Any donations to support the conclave will be gratefully accepted. Contact Pacific District Councillor Randy Akiona at [email protected] for further information.

Richard Erickson University of Illinois

The University of Illinois chapter has initiated Richard Erickson as a Chapter Hon- or Member. After graduation in January 1969, Mr. Erickson worked in California for W.M. Lyles Construction and O’Shaughnessy Construction as a Project Engineer on both public and private underground utility and infrastructure projects. In the summer of 1973, Erick-

THE TRANSIT 12 spring 2011 son relocated to Chicago where he started working for W.E. O’Neil Construction Com- pany as a Project Engineer. With his ability to master a wide variety of skill sets, Erickson progressed in the company holding positions as Project Superintendent, Project Manager, Estimator, Project Executive, and Vice-President Operations. In addition to his position as Vice-President of Operations, he served on the company’s Long Range Planning commit- tee in the early 80’s that developed the company’s growth strategy implemented during that decade. Executing part of this strategy, Mr. Erickson successfully oversaw the start-up of a new regional company, W.E. O’Neil Construction of California, in 1985. With his expertise in industrial, health care, hospi- tality, commercial office & retail, he was able to expand the West Coast operations to over $100M in revenues by 2002. In March 2003, Erick- son was promoted to his current position as Chief Executive Officer & President of O’Neil Industries, Incorporated. As Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Erickson provides oversight and support for na- tional strategies, operations, and focused marketing in all companies. In 2004, Mr. Erick- son organized the O’Neil Leadership Committee along with twelve individuals from all companies who meet on a monthly basis. This productive organizational model encour- ages collaborative teamwork across companies and disciplines. The positive results of this “national model” encouraged organization of the BIM LEED National Committee in 2007. The committees continue to encourage national synergy, and by leveraging resources we train people faster & better than our competition. The Leadership Committees’ efforts have delivered improvements in Leadership, teamwork, productivity, and employee retention. The BIM LEED Committee has increased our awareness of “all things Green”, and devel- oped our capabilities to use BIM technology to deliver improved Customer Service.

Dennis L. Hirota, PhD, PE University of Hawaii

The University of Hawaii chapter is delighted to announce the el- evation of Dr. Dennis L. Hirota to Chapter Honor Member. Dr. Hirota is one of the most experienced civil engineers in the application of auto- mation technology to the improvement of the design engineering profes- sion. He joined Sam O. Hirota, Inc. nearly 40 years ago after serving as a research environmental engineer at the US Air Force Weapons Labora- tory in New Mexico following attending the University of Michigan. He has spent his career designing many of the built landmarks of Hawaii, while trying to research and improve the design process. The first five years on returning to Hawaii, he promoted the use of the overlay process that was used at the Weapons Labora- tory for the production of design documents, which is used today in computer aided design and drafting. During the 1970’s, Dr. Hirota promoted the use of electronic automation in civil en- gineering, land surveying, and architecture. Sam O. Hirota, Inc. was the first firm in Hawaii to acquire a high speed digital electronic plotting and computational capability for in-house use. Since the University of Hawaii School of Architecture did not have comparable equip- ment, the laboratory classes were taught by Dr. Hirota using systems at the firm. Hawaii’s economy in the 1980’s attracted many of the large Japanese contractors, primarily design builders. Dr. Hirota was fortunate to work with almost all of them in building many of the projects completed during that period. This has led to Dr. Hirota forming affliated teams including architects, engineers and contractors to pursue design/ build projects in Hawaii. During a period of five years in the 1990’s, Dr. Hirota served as a member of the American Consulting Engineers Council Management Practices Commit- tee, which provided practice guidelines in the areas of computer automation hardware and software by conducting seminars for the 5,000 member firms. In the last five years, Dr. Hirota has used his affiliations with companies based in Europe to research and use mobile and terrestrial 3D laser scanning and spherical imaging in the design and construction industry. He has attracted international interest by partici- pating in the planning of documenting the world’s 500 most significant cultural sites by CyArk, a non-profit entity whose mission is to digitally preserve cultural heritage sites through collecting, archiving and providing open access to data created by laser scanning, digital modelling, and other state-of-the-art technologies.

THE TRANSIT 16 spring 2011 Dr. Hirota has recognized that educational opportunities are important in shaping the community as a whole and has therefore established funding sources for local Ha- waii students in the form of scholarships, travel support, surveying equipment, the Pacific Southwest Regional Conference in 2009, and for the Punahou Robotics Team for 2008- 2010. As a University of Hawaii Regent, he has focused on the changes to the language for indemnification on University of Hawaii contracts for A/E consultants in order that their projects would be covered by Errors and Omissions insurance.
