Programme Outline Charlie’s mother loves chocolate. One day, Charlie goes to a chocolate shop to buy her a box of chocolate. He has bought a very special box of chocolate because the chocolate is made by Charlie himself. This is because the owner of the chocolate shop invites him to his chocolate factory and there Charlie not only has the opportunity to learn about how chocolate is made but also makes one for his mother. On his way back home, Charlie’s grandmother tells him why his mum loves chocolate. To show his love for his mum, Charlie decides to make something out of chocolate for her. Guess what he is making for his mum? Chocolate cookies! With the help of his grandmother, Charlie makes some chocolate cookies for his mum. It is indeed a very special chocolate day for Charlie!

Suggested Activities 1. Motivate the class by bringing some chocolate to class or asking pupils to bring some chocolate to class. Ask them to talk about the shapes, colour and the taste of the chocolate. Teachers can arouse their interest by asking pupils to name a few of the ingredients of chocolate. Pupils can read the label on the chocolate and find out its ingredients.

3. Make sure that pupils have Copymaster 2 before watching the programme. Explain to them that they are going to watch how chocolate is made in a chocolate factory in the programme. 4. After pupils have done Copymaster 2, they can read the descriptions on Copymaster 3 and number the descriptions in the right order. Answers: ( 4 )Put nuts on the chocolate. 5. Ask pupils to practise reading the dialogues between the salesgirl and grandma on Copymaster 4. Draw pupils’ attention to what we say in a shop. Ask pupils to think of other things they want to buy in a shop and practise the dialogues with their classmate.

6. In Part 4 of Copymaster 5, pupils need to fill in the names of the ingredients needed for making chocolate cookies. Answers: 2. eggs; 3. flour; 4. oil and sugar Teachers can also give out the recipe of chocolate cookies to those pupils who are interested in making the cookies at home.

B. How to make chocolate cookies:

1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. 2. Put the cocoa, oil, sugar, eggs and vanilla in a big mixing bowl. 3. Beat the mixture until it is smooth and cream. 4. Add the flour and the baking powder to the chocolate mixture and mix it. 5. Scoop the mixture and put it on a baking tray. 6. Put the scoops into the oven. 7. Bake for 10 – 12 minutes
