Team Handball Study Guide Origin:  Originated in Europe in 1920  Became an Olympic sport in men’s events in the 1972 Munich Games  Included as women’s event in the 1976 Montreal Games  Fast paced game played by all ages, indoors and outdoors  Combines the elements of soccer, basketball, hockey, and water polo Object: Players try to work together to move the team handball up the floor and throw it passed a goalie into a goal. Throwing, catching and dribbling skills as well as cardio-respiratory endurance, speed, and agility are all important skills. The game of team handball is fast paced, action packed, and high scoring. Rules of Play:

1. The game starts with coin toss. The winner will then perform a throw in to start the game. 2. Each team consists of 7 players, including the goalie. 3. When in possession of the team handball players may: a. Only hold the handball for 3 seconds b. Take up to three steps c. Dribble d. Pass to a teammate e. Shoot at the goal 4. If you hold the handball too long, travel, double dribble, dive or push someone out of your way it is an automatic turnover. 5. When defending you may: a. Intercept a pass b. Knock the handball out of the air c. May casual contact with the opposing team as long as long as it does not result in a defensive foul. (See #5) 6. If while defending you push, slap, hit, grab, or tackle another player, that player gets a free shot on goal. 7. Scoring a goal – occurs when the entire ball crosses the goal line, inside the goal. A successful scoring attempt (when the entire ball crosses the goal line) results in the awarding of a single point. For a goal to count in handball, the shot must be taken from outside the free throw lane. 8. Throwing/Passing- can be overhead, underhand, sidearm
